" AFRICAN TERRAIN "

We cover a lot of different time periods at the workshop, and this month we have added to our African range. This range has proved popular with Congo players, including Foundry themselves, who have most of our existing range. For those who haven't seen our existing range I'll show them first.
This is my favourite set in the range, probably due to the fantasy element and how much I enjoyed sculpting the great ape.

These next pieces make great scatter terrain, adding character and a sense of lived in look.

Next up is a chicken coup, and some chickens.

Last up is a straw hut, and a clay hut, now on to what's new

As we have huts, now we cover when their destroyed with these two ruined huts.
Next is this lookout post, or maybe a test of solitude for the young tribesmen
If your tribe is lucky enough to be near a river, then these hollowed out canoe's would make travel easier.
Finally we have these Termite mounds, these are probably the most versatile piece as they would also make great stalagmites .

Hope you've enjoyed this little trip to Africa, as we have more to come in January, until next time have FUN !

Cheers Dave

  1. Well, I thought I had all the Zulu wars terrain I could ever possibly want - including a rather magnificent and huge King Kong toy I bought from the pound shop many years ago.. purchased for... erm... well, a pound: and then I also have the fine resin one I picked up from you when I was there (you gave it to me cos it was flawed, but it fixed up jut fine mate). However, I can see I was wrong *sighs* there never IS an end to a terrain collection is there **chuckles** especially for that whole colonial African stint. I don`t do Congo, I do "Adventures in Jimland" which came out several years ago, and does the same thing.. only its free. But the point is, terrain for this setting can never make a table set up look overcrowded, the more you have the more delightfully `busy` your game will end up looking at end of the day.

Very nice Dave, veeeery nice :-)))

    1. Glad you were able to find a use for the broken Magnus mate, I agree African terrain never looks too much for some strange reason, probably because a lot is low level, start adding height to a table top and it can look crowded quickly.

  2. perhaps not something i would buy for my own games because I do not play this sort of game, but nice to see them here all the same. i have to ask what is the thing the great ape is looking at and reaching towards. is it a mine shaft or a wellhead?

    1. Indeed Luke, if you don't play this sort of game, it would be of very little use to you, but great you can appreciate them as model pieces.
The piece the great ape is reaching for is a sacrificial alter, with a damsel in a dress as a sacrifice, if it was me I'd give him a ton of bananas as that would be more likely to appease him

    2. i feel a complete fool. the moment i blew the photo up by right clicking it to full size, i could see the rope tied damsel, and the ape reaching out for her. oh dear, it looks like he is after more than a few bananas.
    3. Easily done Luke, I often wonder if the great ape is so angry because of the locals drumming keeping him up all night ! LOL

  3. Truly wonderfully atmospheric pieces of terrain Dave. Very in keeping as, for leisure, I have recently been delving tentatively into `Lost World` and `Skull Island` quite a bit lately.. if only in my mind as a pleasant diversion form the rigours of endless December planning lists. The African terrain pieces would not look out of place in this theme I think?

    1. Indeed Hils, all the renditions of lost world and skull island I have seen the local population looking very tribal, so would fit perfectly. Always good to have a distraction to ease the burden, especially lists ! LOL

    1. Thank you Phil, glad you like them, have to admit the painting of the ruined huts took a while until I found the right way to do them

  5. I've had my eye on these for a while now Dave, particularly the Kong set. When my Congo games move to the Savanna, I shall be adding some of the huts to my collection.

    1. Glad you like them Michael, remember you entering last Xmas prize competition to win the set. We have a couple more huts coming out in January to add variation and a animal enclosure, and palisade to keep out large apes, if you have any scenery requests for this range, happy to listen

    2. I do lie the idea of the enclosure to give a kraal like feel, will they look like thorn bushes?
    3. The current one is along the lines of a palisade type, but a thorn bush one could be interesting as well, will have a look into that option Michael

  6. Some of your best sculpting is to be found in Kong, Dave, imho. Its awesomely cast and weighs a ruddy tonne!! Great advertisement for a corking range :-)

    1. Thanks Andy, he came out at the right time as Skull Island was just hitting the cinemas, but the stance of the ape in the latest rendition was more human in its stance I found

  8. Is it possible to see the huts, chickens, bowls, etc., alongside a 28mm Historical miniature so we could get an idea of compatibility of size, please?

Sorry, I don't mean to be a nuisance, but it would be a help if such an image was possible.

    1. No problem Roy, will see what I can do for you, I might have a foundry model I can use as I don't have a lot of historical models

    2. That is brilliant, many thanks. Are you trading at Bournemouth show, in February? Then I can probably come across and see what you have, as I've some Swahili Coast Arabs, etc., for a game of Congo to do and I'm looking for terrain.
    3. Yes we will be at Beachhead in February, and will also have the next wave of African scenery out by then as well Roy

  9. Not sure how I missed this one, Dave. Lots of nice goodies there. Me being me, the chickens are my favourite. Oooh, you know what would be a good addition to this range? A Nandi Bear! Mythical beastie or primeval remnant, who knows? Certainly it's not something I've ever seen a model of.

  10. And I like the termite mounds too. I was intending on saying that, but got excited about the Nandi Bear.

    1. Thanks Jez will check out the Nandi bear could be very interesting, to be honest the chickens are the best selling piece in the range probably because they cover so many genres
