" A GAME OF FOUR QUARTERS "

" RESULTS"

First off the results of last week`s competition, there was so many great entries and it was really hard to choose just one, as I liked a lot of aspects of all of them I have decided to award every entry a prize. All you need to do is email your choice of Death Match figure to

wargamesterrainworkshop@yahoo.co.uk

... with your name and address you want it delivered to.

Just mark your email with "COMP CHOICE"

"EXPANDING OUR REALM"

So we've been showing you recently, new models and concepts of other races we are adding into the Death Match universe, and I have two more to show today.

First up is the Moretanites, these are a race of sentient crustaceans that are prolific hunters, and are heavily recruited for the hunting parties. Adept on both land and in the water, their hard carapace makes them a tough opponent for any beast. These will also be added into the arena at some point as well once I've designed suitable weapons for them.

These aliens have a huge disdain for humans after a flippant comment in a bar:

"I wonder what they taste like cooked in butter"

The inspiration for these creatures came from watching Australian Master Chef, where they quite often use Moreton Bay Bugs. while watching the program I thought the heads of these creatures look awesome, and it would be cool to build an alien around this element.

I have taken elements from other crustaceans as well and combined them up, so these creations now have ten limbs like normal crustaceans, but I have moved the appendages around to look different: two are in his chest as second legs  to make a stable platform and four are in the head as feeding claws.

Next up is a creation by Hils.. the Furries.

These cute creatures are very inquisitive and adept with technology, they are native to the Ceratid home world, and employed to help the Ceratid's (with some of the delicate operations) in their personal struggles... caused of their unwieldy lack of dexterity.

The drawback to these creatures is they love shiny things, and will often secrete items into their marsupial like pouches. Usually these `items` do not actually belong to them. Oh dear, what more can I say haha.

Now I'm going to pass you over to Steve, for some more cool background, but will be back at the end of the post . . .

Cheers Dave,

*clears his throat before carrying on*

Anyone keeping pace will know by now that Lord Vallatrix (the inventor of `the Death Match games`) comes from the planet Traventi. Traventians are tall (compared to humans) blue skinned race of humanoid looking aliens. For the Death Match game itself, the background `fluff` about this race is really just for atmospheric immersion. But for the Skirmish game being created, all this `filler` will become very important indeed, as the sandbox campaign world and its surrounding inter-steller star system (which will be fully self contained, yet be carefully created to  allow individual gamers to `drop` the game into their existing favourite campaign worlds, with little or no difficulty at all) will reveal.

Vallatrix`s palace... its intrigues, political skulduggery, its loves.. its hates.. its scandals, is pivotal to bringing this world to life. Imagine if you will the court of Henry VIII, or the plot machinations of I Claudius. Then add in some Ankh-Morpork, Gormenghast, a large dose of Sci-fi Queen Cleopatra (Star Gate), then a liberal (but measured) twist of Aladdin, Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, and you have the basic essence of what this is all about. And that`s just the goings on surrounding Vallatrix`s court. On top if this we have all the other houses (think... Necromunda), and their various and diverse intrigues, and then toss the whole thing into space, and you have a hell of a space romp saga.

I call it Science Fantasy, as opposed to straight Science Fiction.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I always know the Vallatrix Palace guards would be an important part of the imagery... in fact possibly theplace to start to flesh this whole idea into form and purpose. Not just as Guards for Vallatrix (resplendent in their royal purple robes), but also as soldiers in the employ of the various other major and minor Traventi lords (and of course, their rivals). What individual gamers will wish to use these guards for is.... well, basically up to them to decide. But the new Skirmish game will be lavish with examples to help and inspire your own creativity: from noble houses, banner and crest designs, important family trees, planetary geography and maps, and all the usual yummy campaign material you could hope for, to bring a game alive.

I am massively proud to be able to show off Dave`s finished and painted male and female Traventi Guardsmen.

From a few concept sketches of Hillers, to Dave`s skillful diversity at sculpting miniatures in resin, in just a matter of days, Dave was able to come up with these two beauties... on top of all the other creations I keep throwing at him to make haha.

God knows how he manages to keep up, but I can tell you now, wow, there are some amazing things coming up in the pipeline.

Back over to you Dave...

" THE BIG ONE"

Now then....

Last week`s competition was really just the prelude to this week`s much cooler competition. If you're interested this is where you can influence the realm that "Death Match" resides in!

So what's the competition I hear you say? Well what we would like you to do is design an alien, or beast or costume for one of the races; or anything you would like to see ( Dave and Tarot`s idea for creating some space pirates, for example?). This can be done as a sketch, or a description, or as a sculpt: then simply email it to the address at the top of the post. You have three weeks from today to get your entry in.

So what's the prize, well there will be two.. as the cupboard will choose a winner. But then you will choose the second as we will do a post with all the entries..... at which point you can vote for your favourite, being the "people's choice".

Each winner will receive the model of their design, and you will also receive a converted and painted gladiator of your choice as well, so you will truly have a one of a kind prize.

Let the creation begin . . .

Cheers Dave

    1. Thank's Luke, one of the greatest riches is happiness, and you get more of this by spreading it. Take your time and choose what you most want. We still have such wonders to show you yet, and obviously you could possibly add to your collection by entering this competition

    2. Dave mate, Tarot`s asked me to ask you... to let Luke have her win, as she thinks he deserves it. Bless her.
    3. That's fine, entirely Tarot's choice. So Luke you now need to pick two bits you would like.
Tarot you are always thinking of others

  3. Do you know what I like the most about all this? Its not mainstream. Mainstream within the hobby bores me a bit lately. So many new things all masquerading as something different, unusual, or simply "buy this new thing" and what is it? Not new at all, just like all the other things that claim (with clever adverts) to be special: but is simply nothing unusual or different at all.. except for the cover perhaps. Meeesh! Doesn`t impress me anymore.

But this, the more I see, the more I read, this IS new, is unusual (and slightly retro in its feel) and it different from anything I have seen anywhere else. Newly updated, the eastern promise of much more to come, and the scent of succulent cherries and dainties yet to savour. And wow, best of all, the hint that we can all be a part of its creation. This truly IS the Kwisatz Haderach of gaming (wonder how any get that classic book inference).

The Moreton Bay Bug ooops I mean the Moretanite crustaceans are AMAZING, and I personally think one of the best miniatures I have seen you create. Imaginative and delightfully alien (tasty looking too). as for the Furry marsupial, he/she is simply adorable and I want one, I want one so much, its like a furby only more cuddly (just don`t ever keep your jewellery out of lock and key).

The guards are stunningly dynamic and wow, so attractive to collect, and addictively so I think . And you have teased my curiosity now with this second grand competition, and have my little grey cells working ten to the dozen trying to come up with an unusual cool idea and concept.

    Terrific posting

    1. Thank you Tarot, I'm guessing you want a furrie as your prize then ! Would never claim to be new, but would certainly like to think we give a unique twist to things. Having watched a few seasons of MC now have been toying with the idea for a few years, finally had a outlet for it. Glad you like the guards and you feel inspired to enter the competition

    2. I adore the Furrie Mr Dave, it is just that I work abroad a lot, and my return visits are infrequent at best (even my home addresses are sketchy and pretty varied (sometimes week from week). My home visits are becoming harder: and apart from a visit to see my friends at Christmas and my plan of purchasing lots of DM things at Salute, to support the cause hehe (which I will buy but not be able to touch until at least the following summer I fear) that will be the sum of my gaming for the foreseeable future *sobs* so you see, hanim`ar, I do not think it fair I take such a lovely prize for myself.. when others are more in need x
    3. No problem at all Tarot, fully understand, and a wonderful thing you've done for Luke

  4. *squeals in delight and does happy dance whilst singing "Everyone's a winner, baby..."*

    *ahem*

So, is the choice of figure from those currently available or does it include the ones you've been showing us?

And this universe just keeps getting better and better! The Moretanites are pretty close to what I was thinking of when I mentioned crustacean-like aliens previously and the furries are also pretty damn cool (although their rounded cheeks and proboscis does look remarkably like something...else).

More lovely background too and a fantastic new competition. This post has it all.

Now, what shall I create and in what medium? Oooooh, so excited - can hardly speak.

    1. Glad you approve Jez, for the prize you can indeed choose any of the models that have been shown up to this post including today's.
Glad you like the crustacean, with the furrie I made shore that there was no tuft on his head to look too much like something else ! LOL
I look forward to seeing which medium you choose

    2. Thanks for clarifying, Dave - I'm pretty certain which model I'd like.

"And the Humans further angered the Ceratids by referring to their Furrie companions as 'willy-faces'..."

During my lunchbreak today I was actually doodling an alien for DM and wondering how I'd go about sculpting it and since the announcement, I've been working out what sort of world it comes from, what it eats and how it would have been introduced into the Games. This is so much fun!
    3. It's no wonder the humans are not welcome in this part of the universe with their flippant comments ! ROFL
Really looking forward to seeing entries for the competition as it can take this in a whole new direction

Good init hehe, and SOOOOooooooo glad you are on board with it too :-)))

  5. Just wanted to add, I couldn`t be happier how those two guards turned out and I have been talking with himself about it, imaging in our minds untold delights and adventures still to be written: Stevie`s going about shouting "Guards Guards" after Terry Pratchett`s Discworld novel and talking ten to the million about Vallatrix guardsmen and how like Ankh-Morpork night patrolmen (Bobbies*) they might be: though I think they might be a little bit more like Caesar`s Gaulish Legionaries (the Asterix the Gaul version of course lol).

    * Question for ten, why 1778-1850 were they called Bobbies?

The inclusion of Moreton Bay Bugs and Furries just makes even more cool. Nice one you guys

you wait `til we start role playing the campaign, and you need to sneak past those six elite guards (standing sentry at the end of the hall).. to steal that big shiny diamond on the polished pillowed dais. You may quickly grow to hate them hehe.
  6. "I wonder what they taste like cooked in butter" is the best yet hehe

  9. What a show full of wonderful surprises, happy bag of wonderful treasures. This site is a place of fun and great people. Thank you all you guys for making it this way.

Incredible post (as always though), and highlights even more delightful things just around the corner and stretching ahead along a golden path of hobby progression.

Excellent preview and teasers for things to come Steve, and skilful rendering from the biker man Dave with his multicolour gloves of resin stained endeavour *chuckles* Your generosity is fast becoming a renowned thing of legend; and I am very happy to keep purchasing and supporting your range of models and toss coins into the proverbial hat (I know the cost of resin and moulding tools my friend). But should your generosity insist, then I would perhaps only suggest (for my gift) pop a fiver in the Army Wives Association to serve an even better cause, and I will just happily continue to buy your wonderful wares and enjoy and appreciate them for the treasures they are: and thank you once again.
