"STONE & STONE"

"IT'S ALL IN THE COLOUR"

Having produced a lot of pre-coloured resin, I know a lot of people can be daunted by the prospect of painting it, so I thought I would do a step by step guide as there are some parts in Death Match produced in this way

In the above image this is the resin before painting, in it's natural translucent blue colour.

Step 1

First put a black wash on the back of the shield and let dry.

Step 2

Now paint the handle of the sword, and the back of the shield in silver, you will also want to paint the five energy nodes on the front of the shield.

Step 3

Next put a black wash over the parts you've painted silver, you could highlight this once dry with some pure silver, but I like the tarnished look so leave as is.

Step 4

Next we paint all the electrical discharge with a light blue, be careful not to get any on the background area

Step 5

The last step is to use some pure white at the points the electrical discharge meets the emitters and where the arcs inter connect.

As you can see relatively easy with a steady hand, your still painting in a similar way to normal, just missing out the undercoat to keep the translucent colour.

Until next time have fun

Cheers Dave

"SARAH SPEAKS"

Anyone who knows Dave can see his drawings, amazing sculpts and hear his passion for the hobby in his descriptions.  What many people do not know is that if you ask Dave to write anything down, it's not the best ( Can't be too harsh I'm married to him).  And so it was that, knowing his own weaknesses, I was coerced into writing the background for Death Match.

Last week after coming home from the gym and shopping for a late birthday present for Dave, I am greeted by a sight that has become very regular nowadays.  Dave is smoking at the back door.. talking away on the house phone.  I shouted hi to Steve he is the only person that calls us on the house phone and I carried on pottering around.  Suddenly I'm passed the phone and, with a mischievous smile, told Steve wishes to have a word.  Apprehensive I take the phone. I have only communicated through a few emails with Steve: and so I listen intently to his request, while Dave (already knowing what`s coming) laughs in the background.

I have been asked to write part of this article and give an insight into how I came up with the universe for Death Match.

So Here Goes!

Firstly, I wish to make everyone aware I personally think I lack imagination, so the idea of writing filled me with dread!  Dave will still stupidly bring me a half made model and ask me what I think. Unable to see the potential he regularly hears "just show me once it's finished."

The models for the Death Match gladiators were among the first models created, so I started with their backgrounds.  The humans were left till last as I find the history or in this case, our possible future.. boring!  The alien races intrigued me more.  Through several hours of discussion - and Dave and I distinguished attributes and attitudes for each of the species.

Dave gave me a very basic idea of fighting skills and abilities and left the rest up to me.

Thanks a lot.

Each species had at least four drafts done, so much of my time was taken up writing it all out into a manageable form.  I may be young but I'm old school, and like to write using a pen and paper.. allowing for a lot of scribbles before finally typing up a version of the finished product.

Having no idea where to start, it was eventually decided that I needed to create the planets each species originated from.  The Planets were designed in keeping with the attitudes of the species.  The Scabendi a violent race were best suited to an Amazon jungle style planet with lots of aggressive life forms.  The Exuviums desired a symbiotic perfectly balanced ecosystem; and the Ceratids being similar to a rhino in my opinion a lush vegetative planet.

Once the origins of each planet was decided, I researched (a lot) into different plants.  Each planet has unique plants, and these needed to suit the environment. Once a rough outline of the plants had been conceived I delved further to populate the planets and create their unusual ecosystems.

Next up was the evolution of the species, to allow the reader to delve into the history and create a picture surrounding how we came to have the creatures we see in the arena.  As a non gamer I know shh don't tell everyone.. I required massive amounts of information about the species to encourage myself to get excited about Death Match.

It worked!

I have played a few games but I prefer to immerse myself in the writing than play.  Each species has been given a different emphasis for life, the Ceratids are avid learner and are driven for a need to equip themselves with as much knowledge as the universe will allow.

The Exuviums (my favourite race the model does not belong to Dave its mine.. mine.. always mine when I eventually do play) are at one with their environment and wish to sustain the planet for as long as is possible.  Lastly the Scabendi have a thirst for fighting and value their weapons and winning at all costs.

I took inspiration from many sci fi films, and read hundreds of short stories on line to try to spark my non-existent imagination.  If you look hard enough you can see the Exuviums spires take inspiration from Enders Game.  Thanks so much Hubby, I get forced to watch sci fi films.  I can't watch one now without seeing some scenery that would look good on a gaming board.

After the final drafts were completed, it was time to start looking at the Humans.  We are slowly destroying our beautiful planet so I extended our abuse and considered what might happen if we continue down this route of destruction.  Several articles about nuclear warfare and its effects were strewn across the living room floor, myself in the centre of an ever increasing amount of research.  I pulled from articles containing details about soil degradation possible weather effect and bio domes in an effort to sustain life.  So in my story ethos (it seemed only logically inevitable) , eventually the Human race destroy Earth and take to the stars.

Exhausted by the hours put into writing, I welcomed the end and looked at the worlds I had created.. completely bewildered that I had managed to write anything: and still adamant I have no imagination. Dave finds this idea hilarious and just points to my writing and the worlds created.

Unfortunately for me I was not finished, and given instructions for writing the history of the games.  I was allowed details on the order the gladiators started competing in the games, and the introduction of the beasts.  But once again I was told "off you go come up with something."  I approached this slightly differently to the planets. There were simply too many questions that I wanted answered.  Who invented the Games and why? Was there a benefit.. a financial gain? and so on. As I came up with the answers: and Dave would periodically pop his head round the living room door and declare " I've had an idea for the history".  Usually just after I had finished that specific section.. it would need to be rewritten.  I managed to include all the additional details Dave asked for and came up with a finished product.

AT LAST.

Steve has now taken this and extended my writing into the background you see in the rules today and I couldn't be happier with the results.

I hope this has given an insight into my writing.  I had no idea where to start so with my trusty pen and paper I began.

I have a feeling this will not be the last you hear from me.  Dave can be very persuasive when he needs me to do something for Wargames Terrain Workshop.

Until Then Bye, and thanks for reading.

  1. WOW, this is simply an awesome post, and has left me in a happy place to read such a success story: the story of an amazing man and his a wife who together (operative word - they worked TOGETHER) worked to create something unique.. something so many others could enjoy and share in as well. Sarah, I don`t think you are even aware you have created an entire gaming genre and an entire new saga for hobbyists to grow, expand and develop over - well, many happy years of future gaming. From little things bigger things grow, and this feels so like the beginning days of TSR and Dungeons and Dragons, it`s almost like history on re-winded playback: the days of Barker, Arneson and Gygax (even Ken St. Andre). THANK you for the clear and interesting insight into the concept and creation of this (very much) ongoing game and its intriguing, and deeply involved world. I am especially impressed by your ecology, and it you to be a caring person with a moral and ethical view on the condition of things that grow on our planet. I`d like to see more people taking this important approach, especially in our schools, and a more caring education (and informing) of the masses.

Dave, the article on painting resin and plastics was awesome, and immensely useful to me This is one aspect I have struggled with, with my own modelling: and your easy to understand tutorial was most valuable to me, and others too I would imagine.

Thank you both, for such a pleasurable post.

    2. Hi Tarot its Sarah. Thank you for your very kind words. You are right I have no idea what I have created in gaming terms Im sure Dave will enlighten me. Also using it to try and get me into gaming. The ecology of the planets was the most interesting aspects in creating these new worlds. I believe we should be teaching our children in schools about the importance of looking after this world, unfortunately this is unlikely to happen. I do however hope that by imparting these views to our children we can make small changes that will eventually turn into large ones.

  3. What an interesting and insightful post. Full of good reasons and delivered with a humility I find attractive, and brings a warm smile to my face as I sit and sip my coffee and read. This is excellent Sarah, and I am so very glad we have all teamed up on TGC and "To Infinity and Beyond!" As T says, the ecology is a rare treat to find included in this, and reminds me of projects such as "Anima" (a very in depth and beautiful Anime role playing game of old) and "Perfect World," an in depth world where hero players work together against the evils of the world in an attempt to try save the planet (a little like the early Final Fantasy tales).

Wonderful, nice easy tutorial on painting coloured plastics and resins Dave. Thanks for that. I know I shall refer to it for sure, and especially useful as my next painting is some Chibi/Anime minis in clear and translucent resin. So the timing couldn`t be better. Plus the fact that Stevie`s new (small) order with you includes some of these clear shields and weapons.. and I`ve asked if I can paint the next ones myself, so yeeeey!!

  4. this was one of the best articles ive read here. it was full of nice things to say, things that matter like the ecology of the world, plants and green things (not always green) and how not everyone is like us. some care about how we treat things that grow. it make me so happy to read it. makes me want to play this game even more now because its easier to follow something when your whole heart can follow it with moral certainty and applaud the insight of its conception.

the painting guide about painting the plastic stuff was so good and i saved it to a place so i can find it easily again when i want to paint my own that way too.

  5. exceptionably commendable. yet another excellent dose of wonder from what is fast becoming (to my mind) the best blog on the internet. The painting help guide will be extremely useful to me, because I want to get these futuristic plastic effects right, so these connoisseur models look their absolute best when I take them (and proudly show them off) to the shows and clubs. Whatever happens, keep hold of that one, Dave. Her honest and plain words are like a garden full of roses in full bloom, sweet and fragrantly beautiful. The new insight I have into this fast growing world, its system and its sand box galaxy, is becoming a bit of an addiction for me here, as I find myself constantly scouring the site to glean new wonders and insights to thrill and excite, enticing me ever deeper into its rich tapestry of yet untold wealth. A perfect post to start my week end relaxation. Thanks you guys.

  6. This post is a little special. The insight of a game world creation (from the creator`s own lips) is always a uniquely special occurrence. I remember hanging on Gary Gygax`s words... every syllable, same with literary heroes like Joe Dever and Terry Pratchett. To hear the words, the reasoning, and the insight of people who create beautiful things is always a humbling experience to me, and leaves to grateful for the chance to have learned from them.

  8. Wonderful posting from Mr & Mrs Stone, packed full of intimate insights into just how people give us our fantastic rules and minis; plus another great look at how Dave paints his mighty sculpts.

Marvellous stuff, and one which certainly made me put down my latest read ("Operation Warboard" by Gavin & Bernard Lyall - don't know if you've ever heard of this one Steve ;-) ) and re-read my copy of "Death Match" all over again. Ah... the trials of a gamer who always flits to whichever rule-set one of his favourite blogs posts about :-)

  9. HtiAHHAHAahahahaa!!! Operation Warboard is a simply divine book on how to play `old school` WWII wargames. Ooooh I wish the old 1970`s four part TV program of it still existed (Gavin & Bernard played a few half hour Operation Warboard games with lavish.. for the time.... scenery and painted miniatures). Sadly it was on old cellulose tape and was destroyed then the ancient BBC vaults flooded. However, take a look at the following nuggets of pure gold. SAVED from the archives, and put up for free of you tube.

    1. Thanks very much for the link, Steve, I plan on watching this on YouTube on the downstairs telly with a cuppa. As for "Operation Warboard", well you can expect a few BatReps featuring it in the future - once I've typed out the rules I plan to use (marvellous suggestion at the start of the book to simply use what you like and discard the rest, and where else is there a rule-set which states you need not roll for pistols as they either hit in open ground or miss against a unit in cover). Terrific recommendation!!

    1. Funny you should ask that Dave, Steve and I were only discussing both of these possibilities yesterday, yes we will be adding to the humans, Steve is already working on concepts for style and different suits. There will be pirates which you can use multiple races in your band
      Delete
    2. okay now that`s interesting, and you say not only the humans, but pirates from across the board, aliens too? Any chance we will see samples of these anytime soon Dave (better still ~ might they be available in the reasonably near future), or is this another exclusive Salute 2018 release thing?
    3. At the moment I'm currently working on Vallatrix's court, as Steve really needs this for work on the skirmish rulebook. Have also started some of the hunters, which will be revealed soon. The pirates at the moment are in conceptual stage, most things are aimed at Salute release but could be persuaded to bring some out earlier
      Delete
    4. That all makes perfect sense, and actually you have inadvertently made me very happy. The fact the skirmish game is obviously being worked upon so seriously secretly fills me with delight, as this is the type of game I am most decidedly interested in collecting for.
    5. No problem at all Dave, we will be keeping everyone who visits the cupboard up to date as it progresses and there will be chances to influence the development

  13. Another fantastic article from the TGC/WTW team. First, a quick and useful tutorial from Dave, followed by a fascinating insight in the development of the DM world.

The attention to detail - determining the type of world, its plant-life and ecology - even if it never gets revealed in game- just increases the richness of the setting, breathing life into it. A lot of games try to create background fluff to add colour and flavour to the game, but without putting too much thought into them, which ultimately leaves you feeling unsatisfied. This commitment to your universe and the fact that its now growing beyond what you had originally envisioned, just undetlines that it's going to be around for a long time.

And its infectious..I've found myself designing alien races in my head, then speculatiing on the kind of world they come from, diet, religion and how they become embroiled in the Games.

Good stuff from the pair of you.

It IS infectious and it IS addictive alright Jez hehe.. To be in on the beginning of a new game venture like this feels a bit like it did back in the day when Warhammer 40K started up (though back then (in that more innocent age) I`m sure no one knew what they had their hands on at the time. Being at the beginning of something new, in this hobby of ours, always feels amazing. Doesn`t happen often nowadays, which is why I savour it when it does.
  14. Thanks for the kind words. It definitely is infectious. my worlds are very precious and I'm glad to see you have been thinking of your own races and speculating their worlds. The background for death match is just as important as the rules hopefully giving the player insights into the fighting styles and stories of the many varied and unique models Dave can create. Sarah

    1. I agree with you completely, Sarah, a good background can sometimes make or break a game and when it's really well written, it suggests adventures and scenarios.

Having now looked at all the figures available, I'm wondering whether the Traventi will have gladiators of their own, as well as the (currently unnamed) cat-kin. For some reason, I'm seeing the cat-kin males as a lot bulkier than the females - sort of Thundercats, but more primitive looking, with bronze armour and daggers, kilts and torcs - possibly with an East Asian influence. I've also been looking at Coconut Crabs (which are actually quite scary looking) and thinking they'd make a good creature to add to the DM bestiaty...or at least the basis for one.

See, THIS is the effect a good game can have - sparking the imagination. Love it. 😁
    2. The traventi and cat-kin will indeed be getting glads Jez, and what you have described is pretty close to the mark. As for the crustacean I have just finished painting a Moretanite which I will be showing later this week not so much a beast but a sentient creature which could appear in the games as a glad and are often recruited as hunters
      Delete
    3. Now that is cool for two reasons - the first is that it means new figures! (And are the Moretanites the "lobstermen" mentioned by Steve?)

The second is that, by making suggestions for DM and finding that they match what's already in the pipeline, means that I 'get' the setting. I just need to bone up on the rules now. 😁
    4. I believe the Moretanites are indeed the lobstermen Steve mentioned.
It does indeed sound that you've got the gist of what's going on Jez, and this week there will also be chance to influence new directions as well

    5. {{and this week there will also be chance to influence new directions as well}}

is that an unsubtle `tease` about the next comp` Dave? *grins*

    7. This just gets more interesting and exciting as it develops. I shall whet my mind and await the announcement.
    8. Having now read the background for each race from the rules, I have a question - who came up with the idea of the Exuvium's living weapons? That is freakily cool...reminds me a bit of the genetically engineered weapons in Harry Harrison's 'West of Eden'.
    9. The initial idea was mine Jez, one of my favourite stories in 2000 ad was Dan Dare on the flying fortress, with his living axe. With the Exuvium I thought with their symbiotic nature with their environment this would be the most suitable type of weapon for them. Also remember 'West of Eden' it's still sat in my book collection

  15. JUST A QUICK NOTE FROM STEVE & HILS

There is a huge hurricane warning imminent on the south coast of Ireland (they`re closing all the schools and putting up sandbags everywhere in the towns and villages, etc). People are already acting Noah`s Ark is in the bay and all the animals are already embarking two by two, candles are becoming a thing of the past in all the shops, and loaves of bread are as rare as gold dust (why do people always do that... and prepare like it s a month siege lol).

Sooooooo, internet may well go down (and phone lines too) and power could go out for ages (can be days in Ireland if they are caught unprepared) So if this hurricane truly is going to be that bad, we may be `lights out` for a while. So if we are quiet for a while, just imagine our screams of frustration and understand whats happening our end hahhahahaa.

Its due to hit us (the first wave) this afternoon, but REALLY give it to us in the night and all tomorrow. Fingers crossed, we will miss the worst of it. Though I`m not banking on it. Last big one was two Christmases go, and we had no power for best part of a week..only came on again Christmas Day morning.
