THRONE OF DOOM

About 15 years ago I had a load of scotiagrendel scenery given to me for Christmas, over the next year I got all but two pieces painted, and they were all used on a regular basis on my gaming table. The two that didn't get painted were a Devil Head Throne and a Demonic Altar, which are both still available from the company. Not sure why, it may have been me overthinking the pieces, and just confusing myself. The first one I have tackled is the Devil Head Throne, I went for a simple palette of grey stone, then picked out details to break up the monotone, as there is two burning flames I added a little simple OSL as well.

Next I hope to get the altar finished, here is the current list of participants for this year

There is still plenty of time if you would like to join in as well.

While I have been focused on scenery, (there is no room on my desk ! LOL) I have managed to make my next character as well, this will be my tech, she has a pistol, but that's a last resort, I introduce Ceri, who is a Sepiipoda, heavily influenced by cephalopods, who knows maybe ours are a failed colonisation by her species !

Already have a colour scheme picked out for her, so looking forward to getting her cast. That's all for this post so until next time, stay safe and have fun !

Cheers Dave

  1. Fantastic work! Funnily enough I recently got a scenery piece from Scotia Grendel too, the Goblin Encampment. Hopefully I'll find the time to get it painted for your challenge!

  2. That Devil Head Throne is absolutely amazing, Dave. You've really done it proud. Do I take it from the pics that the back is completely flat though..? So it's designed to be placed against a dungeon wall or throne room somewhere. Nice gribbly too, judging by its limbs alone that looks like a complicated sculpt to have created - so very well done, sir!! :-)

    1. Thank you Simon, you are spot on it has a completely flat back to put straight against a wall. She was actually a pretty quick sculpt to do, once I had the basic shape it was just a case of adding the textures and details, had the model done in 4 days, most of that was waiting for the green to dry ! LOL

    1. Thank you Stewart, I can see that, would probably fit well in Conan as well ! LOL
OSL is Object Source Light, so in this case the glow emanating from the two fires.

    1. Thank you Suber, they are quite versatile aren't they, I think I wanted it for my Chaos Warhammer army, which I no longer have, but I'm sure I'll find a use for it ! LOL I really enjoyed making this sculpt.

  6. I like the painting on this very much and your OSL is very nice indeed, but I just can't get on board with this sculpt. Looks silly as all hell to me.

    1. Thank you Dai, I am very pleased with the OSL on this one, as it's not something I do a massive load of. No problem on the sculpt, as I won't always make something everyone likes mate.

    2. Wait - I meant the Throne sculpt, not your squidly alien bloke. That multi-limb'd effort is cool and has a fun Spongebob feel to it. :)

    3. No problem at all Dai, I think there was elements that felt wrong which was one of the reasons it took so long to get to ! LOL Even if it had been the squid I would've respected your opinion as I never expect people to like everything I do.

  7. It's the sort of thing gygaz would have come up with - great scupting and a very recognisable figure though Idid initially think 'cuttlefish'

    1. Thank you Joe, sorry about the late reply on this comment Joe, Blogger has taken to marking messages as spam again, I have to now check in the messages and approve them manually. I have never seen any of his work, only saw when he passed away, will have to see what I can find of his.

  9. The critter isan excellent sculp and very recognisable- maybe something Gygax would have done, though I immediately though "Cuttlefish"

    1. Thank you Joe, the head is pure cuttlefish, just fitted to a neck, so great you spotted that, she will be a rainbow of colours from the reference pictures I've got to work from.

  10. Well, I knew I would finally get caught up! And this most recent post also delivers a punch! That's a great looking piece of scenery. Being a fan of octopi, I also really like that mini you created. I also can relate to how scenery can take over your space. My Wife is happy to finally have the kitchen island back, haha!

    1. Thank you Brian, I have been a little busy ! LOL I'm happy with how the throne turned out in the end. She's just a ball of tentacle fun ! LOL I rember those days before I had a dedicated room, so much easier now ! LOL

  11. I think I like this throne/altar even more than the newer one I just commented on. It really has a creepy feel but also seems like something occult. Ceri looks great as well and I look forward to seeing it painted up in the future!

    1. Thank you Jeff, it actually reminds me of a Balrog face by Chris Achilleos did for middle earth game many years ago, but fits in with the classic devil look as well. I'm hoping I've got enough colours for what I have planned for her ! LOL

I like Scotia Grendel stuff and this has come out very nicely Dave! :-) I like the new mini, a bit of a drop in size and attitude from the last one! At the moment my contribution to the Season of Scenery is a big pile of mdf shapes, base texture material, assorted grass tufts and a tub of static grass all dumped next to my desk. So far it looks like I'll be working on more mundane (but essential) scenery items!

    1. Thank you John, they do make some nice pieces, although I rarely buy scenery now, and tend to make my own. Wanted the group to be very mixed in size, attitude and skills, to allow for most eventualities ! LOL Scenery can really take a lot of time, it's why I started 6 different pieces at the beginning, knowing that some would take a lot longer than others, but with the couple of quick wins to get the ball rolling, plus I keep getting distracted with the sculpts ! LOL

  13. The Throne of Doom! Or, as I know it, the downstairs toilet LOL! It looks amazing, Dave, so well painted and the OSL (something I never try) is excellent. I love the way you painted the eyes too, is that gloss varnish or just great painting?

The new sculpt is wonderful, very imaginative and I can't wait to see it painted!

    1. Thank you Matt, I know what you mean, the bathroom remodel is still way down the list of the jobs, but would really like it to move it up the list ! LOL There is gloss varnish on the eyes to give it that extra shine, OSL is not something I do often so glad you liked it.
She is already on the painting desk funnily enough ! LOL
