CAN'T SEE THE WOOD FOR THE TREES

Today I have finally finished the GW wood that I got as a Christmas present, at least 16 years ago. What was the delay on painting this you ask, I got fed up with knocking the leaves off, I had the same problem this time round, so elected where possible, to bend the limbs, to give a second point of anchorage, to try and make them more stable.

For the colours I've gone for an Autumnal palette this was achieved, with contrast paint over a basecoat of yellow, and then individual leaves picked out with red and orange wash. Another major thing I did was cover all the sculpted grass points on the base with flock, as this gave a more natural look. That's all for this post, so until next time stay safe and have fun !

Cheers Dave

  1. Trees are needed for lots of settings, though these have a very "Fantasy" feel to them so kinda stuck in that theme I think. I like the autumnal scheme though and the little bits of foliage on the base really makes the piece pop.

    1. Thank you Dai, they do have a very fantasy feel to them, but could also work in certain sci-fi worlds as well, I was thinking the Kroot homeworld Pech, or maybe a colony of there's which would explain all the skulls on the base ! LOL

    2. GW should be banned from the application of skulls over ALL their products. -__-

    3. But what would they do with all that dead space ! LOL

  2. The autumn vibe is excellent, and it didn't really take much to get there. Nice job!

    1. Thank you SD, was just an experiment to see how it would work, unfortunately the second experiment didn't work as well on the next set and needed a lot more work ! LOL

  3. AH, I remember those tree kits. They are kinda wonky looking; like Wizard of Oz crossed with a nicotine dream. 😀
The Autumn effect is really good though.

    1. Thank you Stewart, can't remember why I wanted them to begin with, but will make effective cover on the board. Great when a simple idea comes off, though doesn't always work out like that ! LOL

  4. Sweet! As the others said, the colours on the leaves work perfectly, they have quite a charm of their own. Lovely!!

    1. Thank you Suber, when I first started this I got one tree painted with green leaves, but didn't like it, so hoped that these colours might inspire me a bit more, and who knows on a alien planet, these might be the normal colours ! LOL

  5. Nicely done, Dave, they almost look like Vermont in autumn :-) You got the colours spot on, that lovely warm orange is just superb!

    1. Thank you Matt, I do love the Autumn colours, just not raking up the leaves ! LOL Always try to take notice of the colours, just incase I ever decide to paint something like it, like now.

  6. Great looking piece of terrain there, Dave! I like the colors and it kinda reminds me of the pool that Matt did recently with the trees around it. Probably because I have water on the brain! ;)

    1. Thank you Brian, it was a refreshing change to painting green (not my favourite colour at the best of times ! LOL) I guess when you've seen one wood you've seen them all ! LOL Talking of water how's your pool coming along ?

    2. It's sort of going....I'll either have it posted this month for SOS *or* it's going to get binned! ;P

    3. You should never bin scenery as it can always be recycled into something else ! LOL

  7. I have one of those sets too and mine has languished unpainted (except one tree) for quite a while. If the leaves are left off, they make good 'spooky' trees, for Scooby Doo or witchhunter games.

    1. Thank you Jez, I did consider leaving the leaves off, but wanted the foliage in the end, but agree they do look good as spooky trees being all twisted and gnarly.

I do like the autumn colours, Dave, and the base looks really good! :-) By coincidence I'm working on trees and bases for them myself!

    1. Thank you Mark, thought it would make a nice change to painting green leaves, plus it fitted well with not all the branches having leaves on them.

  10. I remember these trees well and I certainly spent some time thinking if I could figure out a way to make them realistic looking enough for use in LOTR. I never did solve that one but I love how these look. It sounds like it was a bit of a pain to work with but the autumn colors look spot-on! What game or games do you plan on using this terrain with?

    1. Thank you Jeff, I think the only place in LOTR they might even remotely look right would be Mirkwood, as the don't have a very natural feel to them. This set was the easier one of the two, but more on that in the second sets post ! LOL I'll probably use them as trees on a alien world, for 40K, or any other sci-fi setting, as I don't have a lot of fantasy stuff anymore ! LOL
