GOING UP THE SCALES

Spurred on by completing the last big scale marine, I decided to finish the other one I had, this was the one released by Forgeworld as a Death Company Marine in their Showcase range, what the standard model looks like can be seen below.

I changed a lot of the icons to my chapter, but also commissioned a jetpack by the king of the  bigature Cassar, for those who have not heard that name, he was very active on Cool Mini or Not, but also frequented other forums, where he scrathbuilt big scale models out of Milliput. The only addition I did to the jetpack was add a skull.

Now I had both marines finished, I decided to finally get the bust of a commisar done, as it was so close, and just needed a few details finished off.

This is where I thought this post would be ending, but my eldest daughter brought up a lifesize model that she wanted help with, the caterpillar from Labyrinth. Apparently she had ordered the static one, but because the lady selling them had a delay because of her printer, she upgraded to the moveable one (THANKS ! LOL) this then added to the fun of trying to get paint everywhere.

Think it's turned out pretty well, and close to the reference picture. The next post will be about October's challenge, so until then, stay safe, and have fun !

Cheers Dave

  1. A cracking feast for the eyes, Dave. That space marine back-pack looks top class - was it sculpted by hand or 3D as it looks very smooth..? Lovely painting, and the Labyrinth caterpillar is a particular fave of mine.

    1. Thank you Simon, the jetpack was hand sculpted, Cassar was a master atthe bigger scales. For such a small part the caterpillar had such a big role ! LOL

    1. Thank you Suber, was pleased with the result on all three, and a great feeling to finally get the marine and commisar finished, taken far too long ! At least I made up for it with the caterpillar, only took a couple of days ! LOL

  3. Assault marine will stand proudly next to his battle brother!

Absolutely love that Commissar bust! Almost got one back in the day too. Rather jealous

My fav of this post tho is the worm. Labyrinth is one of my all time fav films. I saw it in the cinema in Basildon when it was first released and have gone through two dvd’s I’ve seen it so many times. I have a plushie on my work desk who watches over me as I toil too. I might be obsessed

    1. Thank you Dai, yes all three are now stood together on their shelf in the cabinet, very pleasing to walk past and see them all complete ! LOL
The commissar is an awesome bust, with so many details ( probably why it's taken me so long ! LOL)
Have got all 5 of my children watching Labyrinth over the years, for me I always liked Ludo. This is my eldest daughters favourite character too. I to saw it in the cinema, but in Bristol, only on my first DVD copy though ! LOL Enjoying something is never a problem, as long as it doesn't hurt anyone else ! LOL

  4. The post that just keeps giving and giving,
Great marine and what a wonderful job on that jumppack!
The commisar bust , I don't get all that effort when you could be painting minis (but it does look good)
I love the caterpillar, the eyes are especially well done - your daughter must be really pleased.

    1. Thank you Joe, great to finally get these big scale mini's finished, Cassar did a stunning job on the jumpack and more refined than the GW version ! LOL
I can see what you mean with display pieces, I look at it as having the chance to try out new techniques and push my skill level, which I can later use on gaming miniatures.
She is very pleased and surprised at how quick I got it done. The trick on the eyes was a layer of gloss varnish at the end to give the reflective look to them.

  5. Wow, you're leaving us small scale painters behind here, Dave! I wouldn't have guessed you'd be doing several larger scale miniatures in a row but these all look great. I really like the Commissar bust as that is classic GW as far as I'm concerned. The chainsword really came out well!

    1. Thank you Jeff, I've been working on these for many years, it's just a recent push to try and get them finished ! LOL Was very pleased with the effect on the chainsaw as with the leather glove and shiney peak worked how I envisaged.

  7. That last one caught me off guard, haha! Caterpillar looks exactly like the one from that screenshot. The Commissar looks really good too. I've never been into mini-busts that much, but I'm becoming more interested in them having partially painted one and seen them at the painting competition.

    1. Thank you Brian, was trying to go for accuracy on it, as it is so iconic, sounds like I got there ! LOL Busts have never really been my thing either, but did enjoy the larger surfaces, and pushing my painting skills, may try another at some point.

Nice work, Dave! :-) It's tempting to think it's easier to paint large figures, but they have loads more detail and large plain surfaces in abundance, and these are all very nice!

    1. Thank you John, you're not wrong, the transitions need to be a lot smoother, and also more gradual to carry off the illusion, on smaller scales you want a bigger contrast, so it's a reversal.

  9. Superb work on the Marine, Dave! I can't get over the jump pack being homemade, it looks like a resin accessory you'd buy! As John said, these larger models have so much detail and plain surfaces that painting them can be more difficult than the usual 1" figures. The Commissar is also excellent, but that caterpillar takes the cake for wonderful painting and its resemblance to the movie character.

    1. Thank you Matt, Cassar did an awesome job on the construction of it, the larger the model gets the more work it takes to look right ! LOL Thought the caterpillar might steal the show ! LOL
