While I was working for GW, one Christmas they gave every staff member a big scale marine miniature, as seen below.
It is a great model, and I was lucky enough to get hold of a second one, from a staff member who didn't want theirs ( had no interest in marines, I know heresy ! LOL). I had the idea to paint it up as my chapter, but it needed some additions, the knife he was holding wouldn't fit in the scabbard, as it should be a gladius, this I got from the Inquisitor model of Artemis. Also I wanted to sculpt on my chapters symbols on the shoulder pads, I decided to make it a sergeant for a devastator squad, colour wise I used the same recipe that I normally use, but with the larger surface area allowed for a bit more detail easier.
Happy with how it turned out, and have another same scale that Forgeworld released to finish off as well, so until next time stay safe, and have fun !
Cheers Dave
Now that's really nice. Dave! :-) I do like your colour scheme! Even though I don't do GW I do like their marines!
ReplyDeleteThank you John, it's taken a while to get round to this model, and thankfully it's spurred me on to get a couple more large scale models close to being finished, so hopefully I will have them to show soon. It's the artist in us where we can appreciate what someone else does even if it's not a subject we normally do ourselves.
DeleteThat looks great, Dave. I remember seeing those around back in the way, though obviously I was never eligible for one myself. Love your work on this as well as the custom sculpting. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you Azazael, the staff at the time were hoping that this was the start of a yearly theme, sadly that didn't happen ! LOL The hardest part on the additional sculpting was trying to keep the original battle damage showing ! LOL
DeleteWell, that's insanely good! I love how you managed with such a different scale! I got one of these large scale guys a hundred years ago, an Ultramarine with a missile launcher, but I have to say that I enjoy your work quite a lot!
ReplyDeleteThank you Suber, I found on the bigger scale a lot of the time a minimalist approach works best, whereas the smaller scales we up the contrast greatly, the bigger ones benefit from subtle changes in shade, as the natural shadows form easier. Glad you liked it as I have a couple more coming up ! LOL
DeleteI didn't know they ever produced minis at this scale, looks great!
ReplyDeleteThank you SD, Forgeworld did a limited run of a Death Company Marine based off this model, in their showcase line, I wished they still did models like this, not just ones for gaming, and wish I had picked up more of this line.
DeleteNice way to make it "yours". Cool too to see your own chapter in a larger scale. Never had a larger sale GW mini like this, nor did I work for the company, though I did at one time apply for a job in the art department!
ReplyDeleteThank you Dai, if I hadn't got the second one, I would not have started playing with it ! LOL Even when I was working for them, couldn't afford the really large one they did, but this scale was a little more affordable ( as long as it was only occasionally ! LOL).
DeleteThat would have been a cool job to get, I was inline to be a Eavy Metal roving painter, until they learned I was a manager, and they said I couldn't do both ! LOL
Even us none sci-fi types appreciate a good marine when we see one and this guy is wonderful and probably very rare and you have two !
ReplyDeleteJust how biu is this 'large' marine ?
Thank you Joe, it was fun to work in the bigger scale, including the base rock (not the wooden plinth) it is 80 mm tall, they were limited to one per staff member that was working that particular year, so I would say pretty rare, and I was very lucky to get hold of the second one ! LOL
DeleteThat's interesting. I had no idea GW did this. Could you show us a picture of one of these with a regular marine to see the scale? Nowadays, they've got those action figures which are downright huge compared to what we're used to painting too. You did a great job bringing this marine to life, Dave. The details look great!
ReplyDeleteThank you Jeff, I'll take a picture next to a normal marine, and include it in a future post for you. The toys have really opened the market on the larger scale, before when Forgeworld did one that size, it was majorly expensive, and well out of my price range at the time ! LOL
DeleteI haven't seen a larger space marine yet, but you did a nice job on him.
ReplyDeleteThank you Brian, I believe the McFarlane toys are larger than these, who knows maybe one day I'll get one ! LOL
