ONE VISION

Sometimes distractions fall into place, this month being just such an occasion as when my eldest son brought up the Dragon Egg, he also brought a Cyclops, which also fits perfectly for Monster May(hem). This was another 3D print he picked up at a show, and did suffer with the dreaded shallow detail, but just means I have to push my painting ability harder. There is no conversion on this model, and the colours were what my son chose, all I did was pick the shade and highlight colours.

A straight forward paint, and the base was what was provided with the model. My youngest son, hasn't caught the model bug yet, but that isn't to say he doesn't provide extra distractions as well ! LOL The other day he asked if he could paint his skating helmet, after convincing him to draw his design first, my wife and I agreed, he did all the base colour work, and then I did all the detail work for him.

He now has a one of a kind crash helmet ! LOL That's all for this post, so until next time, stay safe and have fun !

Cheers Dave

  1. That Cyclops is really cool, but the Comic nerd in me really loves that helmet! What did you use to paint it and protect it? It looks great! :D

    1. Thank you Brian, the cyclops was fun, and something totally different to what I normally paint ! LOL The helmet was painted with the same acrylics I use on my models, as my sons acrylic red came out more pink and thin on the helmet, I've sealed it with satin varnish for exteriors with a brush to not get any on the polystyrene that's inside the helmet, as I didn't want it rotting away ! LOL

  2. Cyclops is an interesting sculpt and I like the dynamism of the pose.

That helmet though steals the show! Hope your son doesn't biff off his deck too often and scratch up that awesome custom art!

    1. Thank you Dai, yes it is a very dynamic sculpt, was a shame about the shallow detail though ! LOL
I'm hoping he doesn't too, as touch ups would be an absolute pain ! LOL

  3. Just what Dai said! The Cyclops is so great, I love the pose; the chain, the body, everything. However, that helmet deserves a whole post! Fantastic job on both fronts!

    1. Thank you Suber, it rally is a great pose, has a definite sense of movement and weight to the piece. Wasn't sure if anyone would be interested in the helmet, so include it here as it tied in doing pieces for both of my sons.

The Cyclops is really good, Dave, and the shading and highlights have more than made up for any shallow detail! :-) The helmet is brilliant!

    1. Thank you John, your spot on with the shallow detail you have to rely on your painting ability a lot more ! LOL It was a very different form of painting being a completely flat surface, and something I haven't done for a long while, but was very happy that my son loves it.

  5. Yeah, the helmet is stealing the post. Lol. Does venom count as a monster?

Great job on the cyclops too. 😀

    1. Thank you Stewart, as to whether the helmet will count for Monster May(hem) that would be down to Keith's ruling on it, he has included scenery and markers before, so maybe ! LOL

  6. That Cyclops is a burley looking fellow! I like the mini quite a bit and you did well painting him up. Are you tired of painting skin yet!? I couldn't follow the giant up with another mini like this so good on you, Dave! I can only agree with others that the helmet stole this post. I think there are quite a few grown adults who would pay well to have a helmet that looks that cool :)

    1. Thank you Jeff, he is very stocky, as he's a lot smaller than the giant, it wasn't too much trouble, and the next piece is very different, as a nice break for me ! LOL the design idea was all my son, just advised on ways to tweak it for the best results, as far as adults paying for this that's why I do commissions ! LOL

  7. Love the cyclops, but I can imagine it being a pain on the table(in every way) with that flail.
I'm not that into superheroes but the helmet looks like a mixof spider man and Venom (- or am I wayoff ?) and looks great.

    1. Thank you Joe, totally agree on the Cyclops, but I think my son is just using it as a display piece, so will hopefully not be a problem.
You are spot on with the Spiderman Venom reference, which was what my son was going for.
