Let the May(hem) commence, this is my first entry for Monster May(hem) and I'm starting out with my dragonkin, the colours I've gone for tie into my Fire Breathing Dragon so that can be a Old One as part of the faction. I've also tried a few new things on this one, Dragon Glass blade, and a different way of doing blue gold.
Below is the reference picture I used for the blue gold.
I've also painted up a baby dragon for my eldest son, who got this 3D print with another piece that I will hopefully get done for MM as well.
Tried using gem paints for a different effect on the egg, which I really like and so does my son. That's all for this post, so until next time stay safe and have fun !
Cheers Dave
I love this miniature, Dave, and he looks so much better painted. The gem effect is great. I am definitely adding him to my order for that challenge later in the year, so make sure you save one for me. Awesome work!
ReplyDeleteThank you Keith, still playing with the gem paints to see what effects I can get with them, but then I do that with most of my paints ! LOL Of course mate I will keep one by for you, who knows by then I may have made more to that range ! LOL
DeleteTop notch work, I find this monster enormously inspiring. The sculpt was amazing, but the paintjob brings it to life. The colour combo is great, and the details, such as the colour on the wings, are pure genius
ReplyDeleteThank you Suber, I wanted the wing colour to be different from the big dragon but also have colours that tie in as well, so markings are an easy way to go.
DeleteGreat job on the painting. It’s certainly an awesome dragon and the baby has a nice balance between cute and DANGEROUS. 😀
ReplyDeleteThank you Stewart, it was a fun one to paint and build, got a few more ideas for trueborn, but still working on the design for the lesser Dragonkin. The hatchling had some difficult bits to reach being a 3D print, but was happy with the end result.
DeleteVery nice! :-) I was impressed with the green but it really looks the part now!
ReplyDeleteThank you John, it's the painting that really finish the idea, but then someone else could see the same model and have a completely different idea, as we shall see later in the year with Roger's challenge.
DeleteYou painted up your Dragonkin really nicely and the "dragon glass" blade makes total sense! It looks like the dragon glass was a metal base coat, but I can't tell what color. Also, can you tell us more about this "Blue Gold"? Lastly, that dragon hatchling is too cute! The gem paints worked really well for the shell as well.
ReplyDeleteThank you Brian, the dragon glass blade was basecoated with GW Zandri dust, then some specific highlights with bone, then built up layers of Nuln oil wash until I got a varying thickness of the black, followed by a couple of pure white highlights on edges, then a good coat of gloss varnish. For the blue gold I did a basecoat of Vallejo night blue over black, then Vallejo Imperial blue, as a first highlight, second highlight was with silver, for where the light hits it directly, then two layers of GW gemstone blue (Soulstone) to get the metallic blue finish all over, also helps tone down the silver. If my son hadn't found it I would never have found the hatchling, but was fun to try out some different colours, I actually used gold as the base colour before the red and green gemstone paints.
DeleteCheers Dave! :D
DeleteYou are most welcome Brian, any questions please ask, and I will do my best to answer.
DeleteLove the colour choices on the dragon man and that blade is very cool.
ReplyDeleteBaby in its egg is also fun - perhaps that’s what the bigger feller (feller-was?) is guarding?
Thank you Dai, the red and blue contrast well, without looking strange, sometimes ideas pan out, and others require repainting ! LOL
DeleteIt was a quick fun one to do, and a chance to play with the gempaints again, and you very well could be right ! LOL
Very cool Dave - that Dragon.. kin... man.. thing looks great, and the Egyptian theme shines through very nicely. The egg looks pretty sweet as well - the gemstone paints worked a treat. Reminds me of my days playing WoW collecting various Dragon Eggs! :)
ReplyDeleteThank you Azazael, Aztec styling gets used a lot, so I thought the Egyptians deserved a shout out too. Not a model I would have picked up, so my son is giving me a varied selection of work ! LOL Hope all the eggs didn't hatch at once ! LOL
DeleteWonderful painting, Dave, you've really brought it to life. The dagger looks amazing and you nailed the blue/gold look for its helm and bracelet.
ReplyDeleteThank you Matt, I had my doubts on the blade working right up to the last wash and highlight, so glad it worked out in the end, the blue gold was fun to try, and was relatively easy to do.
Delete3 posts in a week and 3 very different kinds of monsters! That has to be some kind of record surely ;) The dragon came out great and I like the idea to incorporate some blue gold in the paint job. The dragon egg looks really nice too. I wouldn't have thought to use metallic paint on the egg but it really works well!
ReplyDeleteThank you Jeff, it's probably a record for me, but there are some more prolific posters, with one every day for over a year ! LOL I thought the blue Gold would continue the Egyptian feel to the piece. It was a fun experiment, that thankfully turned out well, otherwise, I'd have had to do it again ! LOL
DeleteI'm guessing the Dragon is a large model (it's a dragon after all) but it's difficult to tell by the photographs. I like the colouring , bright colours make it 'pop' .
ReplyDeleteThank you Joe, he is approximately 3 and a half inches long, so not massive as Dragons go, glad you like the colours as it's similar to my Fire Breathing Dragon.
