FROG ON A BOG

The above title was my staff at GW affectionate name for a Slann on Palanquin, which is one of the leader options for the Lizardmen army. This model is the third version that GW released, the first was carried by human slaves, the second was carried by Saurus Temple Guard, then this one, there is now a new plastic version, but I don't see anything wrong with the version I have, so wont be getting the new one.

Before putting the Slann into place, I remembered to take a picture of it's back, as you don't see it  once it's in situ ! LOL

For the Slann I went with the colours of a Golden Bell frog, which I have included a picture below, my pet one was closer in colour to the version I've painted, but unfortunately I never took a picture of it.

All the lizards , frogs and snakes on the model are based on real ones, and the base I wanted to try a swamp feel, quite pleased with the result, but want to experiment more with this. Hoping Keith will except this as my next entry for Monster Mayhem, that's all for this post, so until next time, stay safe and have fun !

Cheers Dave

  1. The palanquin born aloft by human slaves was my fav version of this. Just like the idea of the Lizardmen using their food for manual labour like we do! LOL

Love the colours in this piece though - so vibrant like the jungle really is. Got to experience that when I visited Panama some years back - just felt so "alive", literally bursting with life where even the few critters I managed to spy seemed far too garish to be real, yet they were. Good stuff mate!

    1. Thank you Dai, In my original army, I had both the earlier versions, one as a high level being born by Saurus, and the one being born by the humans, as a low level sorcerer.
Nature is amazing with it's colour palette, whenever I want something different, I just google unusual colour schemes for that species, and pick one I like, there are so many to pick from ! LOL

    1. Thank you Stewart, I couldn't bring myself to stick him down, so he is just placed on the Palaquin ! LOL

  4. Big fan of the original Slann by GW and whilst I love the Lizardman Army, can't help but wish GW went back to the original concept figures - thin limbed and much more frog-like imho.

    1. Thank you Simon, there design aesthetic has certainly changed over the years, and part of that will be down to the materials they now use, and design techniques.

  5. This is a great miniature and one I often thought about painting back in the day! I really like how you painted him up, Dave, and using a real life frog for inspiration was a great call. The Slann looks very realistic and lifelike as a result.

    1. Thank you Jeff, as I recall it was a pain to stick together this version in metal, because of the weight and small lugs, but that aside it was a great sculpt. It wasn't until I applied a green glaze all over, except his belly that it really came to life, that and the gloss varnish to give it the wet look.

  6. That is one ugly critter you've got there, but well done matching its appearance to a real-life frog.

    1. Thank you Joe, definitely a face only a mother would love ! LOL I thought the colours of the real frog have another world feel to them, so would suit it perfectly.

  7. Nice choice on the paints, Dave! The Slann model was one I had my eye on as a coach for the Lizardmen team in Blood Bowl. I think the latest one was too big and expensive though. Maybe I should check out some of the older models and see.

    1. Thank you Brian, I thought it was an interesting colour choice, and something a bit different ! LOL Can see a Slann being a great choice for a head coach, it's certainly the way I would go, the older ones are a bit smaller than the latest version, as for the price of them it could vary greatly between being cheaper or more expensive ! LOL

I'm catching up again, Dave! This looks really nice! You've captured the look of the Golden Bell frog very well! I can justify my absence at least by saying I have been watching Star Wars stuff! There will be some who won't approve of my next comment, but I've re-watched Solo (A Star Wars Story) and quite enjoyed it to be honest!

    1. Thank you John, it was such a cool colour scheme that I knew I wanted to use it somewhere. As I'm posting roughly every 3.5 days it's easy to fall behind ! LOL I liked Solo, and only had two bits I disliked, the look of the Pykes, and the captive Wookies, but that's just my personal tastes.

I think I'd agree with your dislikes there! I did like the troops in the grey-green uniforms though and maybe thought you'd probably like to model some of them at some point (if you haven't already)!

    3. Have found a lot available from 3D printers, including the mud troopers that Han was a part of, but the ones I'd most like are the Crimson Dawn enforcers.
