FE FI FO FUM

Todays entry for Monster May(hem) is a plastic Chaos giant from GW, I've had this model for 16 years, did all the conversion work, got it undercoated, and then it's sat since then. Originally I bought it to add into my Khornate Marauder army, all the troops horsemen and chariots, were marauders, with a chaos warrior mounted on a dragon leading them, for steeds I used the mutie steeds from Gorka Morka. When Warhammer ceased to be, I sold off the army, but kept the giant, as it was still a current model and I still wanted to paint it. When I put the kit together I used parts from the chaos version as well as parts from the Orc version, so the mutations were more varied, plus I really liked the dragon skull club.

I went for pretty simple colours, nothing too bright, with occasional pops of colour to add interest points, overall happy with the end result. That's all for this post, so until next time, stay safe and have fun !

Cheers Dave

  1. I really need to pick up a GW Giant at some point, Dave. But frankly their current FOMO/product shortage for several boxes I've wanted has put me right off the company - so I don't plan on buying from them at any point soon. You've done a top job with yours and I really like the simple palette with pops of colour - definitely a post I'll be returning to when I do get one.

    1. Thank you Simon, I have noticed a lot of out of stocks on their site, and even a few no longer available on line as well, a strange business model indeed ! The way I thought about his clothing, was he couldn't really buy of the peg, so would need to collect up a lot of no longer needed pieces (victims clothing) and patch them together ! LOL

  2. The conversion work is awesome, but I'm fascinated by how you painted the skin. Such large surfaces scare the hell out of me, but your paintjob looks amazing :O

    1. Thank you Suber, Lot's of thin layers, with small gradients between the colours was the key on this much skin, plus thinking about where the light was coming from, and only putting the final highlight in areas that would catch the light, not just all over.

  3. Great conversion and paint job! I like how you used different feet, gives the model an even more Chaos-y look.

    1. Thank you snapfit, that was my thinking exactly, why would the mutations match, it doesn't in nature ! LOL

  4. He's very Chaos'y for sure. I like his moustachios the best though.
Although you've since sold off the army he was purchased and converted for, do you have a use for him in a game or setting now?

    1. Thank you Dai, was just some spare bits from the kit, added in to make his Fu Mancho moustache ! LOL
I can always add it into my Emperor's Children force, can't imagine him lasting long against Lascannons, but would certainly be a laugh ! LOL

  6. That must be a huge model, just as well it's in plastic too as it's dynamic pose would be a bit top heavy in metal. Great colouring too.

    1. Thank you Joe, he is 4 inches tall, and would have been a nightmare in metal ! LOL Glad you like the muted tones, it means it would fit with many factions, not just one.

  7. Love it, Dave, and as Suber says those large areas of skin look amazing! The dragon skull club is great and really adds to the model, and your simple paintjob makes it look realistic without going over the top. Nicely done!

    1. Thank you Matt, large areas can be daunting, probably why it took me so long to get round to painting it ! LOL Where I've been painting larger models over the last couple of years, and picked up a few new techniques and paints, it became less of a challenge, and more of a joy to actually get done, glad the colour choices worked out.

  8. Nice work, Dave! The flesh turned out really well. Which can be pretty tricky when there are large areas to cover. I remember the first time I painted one of those old GW Ogre brutes with the bare chest....what a nightmare! :D

    1. Thank you Brian, I do like painting large flesh areas, in different tones, and is always a challenge which hopefully pushes my painting ability to greater heights.

I like this guy, Dave! Looks really good! Do you have an army that you can use him in, because it'd be a shame not to?

  10. I'm pretty sure this mini came out during my first go in the hobby so I know it well! Its a classic and there's something about this one that the newer ones are missing. I think it looks a bit more light-hearted maybe. Either way, you did a nice job painting this up. You're on a roll with knocking out these bigger models as well!

    1. Thank you Jeff, there was so many fun bits you could stick on this kit, squashed goblin, peasant running away, or one in a cage to hang from his belt, so I know what you mean about the fun aspect to it. Got the biggest model yet to come, but has been great to finally clear some of these projects ! LOL
