What Tatooine desert would be complete without a crashed escape pod, or that was my thoughts at least. I received this kit back in October for my birthday, but took a while to get to, as my Google Foo wasn't bringing up much in the way of reference pictures, eventually I found one, and this is what I did. Reference picture included underneath.
I did the base as a separate piece, so it could be looted by Jawa's as a scenario. I haven't done anything with the C3PO and R2D2 that comes with the kit at the moment, but may well make a 3PO crossover with a battle droid at some point, and R2 can add to my robot infiltrators for the Clone Wars era, but that will be something for another day.

That's a nice one and your paints look spot on! I can't recall, did we ever see them exit? Was wondering where the hatch was for that thing.
ReplyDeleteThank you Brian, once I had the picture it was easier, and gave me the correct colours. In the movie they are already walking away from the pod when you see it crashed, but it has two, one at the front, which is the one the enter by on the ship, but on this kit would be very hard to open with that angle, the other is a side hatch, which is the big panel facing upwards. I didn't do it open on the kit, as I'd have had to build the interior and I was being lazy ! LOL
DeleteOh... Is that the Legion model, Dave..? If so it looks very detailed and accurate. Great paint-work. I too would paint it with the panel shut, LOL!! I might rummage around to see if I have that one as I put all my Legion sprues in a big box for a rainy day.
ReplyDeleteThank you Simon, it is indeed the Legion one, I was impressed with the outer detail, and to be honest wasn't expecting interior detail, as it is a gaming piece ! LOL I guess I should have put some ring seals outside the pod if I was being really accurate ! LOL

ReplyDeleteThank you John, once I had the reference a lot of the work was done with washes to get the right tones. I was about to stick the model to the base, and suddenly had a moment of clarity and thought, a pod crater and separate pod would give me more options, plus a lot easier to paint the two pieces individually ! LOL

DeleteThat is a very nice looking sculpt and while I initially thought your version might be a little too dark, once I saw the photo reference, I realized that it is pretty much spot-on! You could maybe add a bit of paint chipping to it but it really looks great as is. I'm hoping you'll paint up the droids in the near future as pretty much everyone likes them, including myself!
ReplyDeleteThank you Jeff, until I found the reference picture I was going to do it a shade lighter, so was glad to find it first ! LOL I think in the desert scene it looks lighter due to the bright light of the two suns, which is probably why we both thought of a lighter tone. I had thought about some chipping, but couldn't see much on the reference picture so left it off. I do already have an R2 and 3PO already for this time zone, which is why I'm thinking of what else I can use these for.
DeleteTHe model is great and well done gettinga really good likeness to the reference photograph, the base however looks like it could do with a lot more work - it looks very plasticky (which it probably is)

ReplyDeleteLovely work on the escape pod matey, back when I was starting out in the hobby ( a loong time ago now!) I made a crashed escape pod out of a R2 D2 star wars figure and a toothpaste tube lid as the exhaust , it was crap to be honest, Yours is much better!😁

Thank you Roger, the fact that you built one, is the greatest exercise in scenery, having a go, as we progress we learn new skills and things get better. Sadly this was me being extremely lazy and just painting a production one ! LOL
