FALSE STATEMENT

In my last post I claimed I'd finished my Kabal army, now I knew I still had some bases to do, but I thought I had painted all the models. As I started to go through doing the bases I found I had missed two things completely, the first was a scenery piece, now that technically isn't part of the army, but adds to the theme when gaming. I originally built this piece when I worked for GW and was part of my intro board as a Dark Eldar portal, it was made from a plasma globe, and as you can see still works. When I left the company I took the piece with me as I had paid for the piece, it just needed painting to match my army, as seen below.

The next piece I realised wasn't done was the Incubi I needed to bring the squad up to full strength now the leader had a different retinue, this was not even undercoated, so I have no excuse on not remembering, other than it was sat in the carry case.

Finally here is the scale shot Dai asked for of my Darkstar next to a regular Raider, to show it's size.

As soon as I finish all the basing I will do a army post, which could be the next posting, as I'm managing to get through it pretty quickly, so until next time stay safe and have fun !

Cheers Dave

  1. Splendid stuff, Dave, and I can see why you took the portal with you when you left GW. I don't envy you your basing your army though, LOL, I've just finished doing ten Papsikels figs at once and that darn near killed me - I loathe basing with a passion, LOL!!

    1. Thank you Simon, as I recall it cost £35 some 20+ years ago, so wasn't cheap, and was too expensive to go through on petty cash, so was definitely coming with me ! LOL I've tried to get better with basing and do it as I finish a squad, but doesn't always work, luckily all had their sand stuck on, just needed painting and flock when dry, and some were already finished, so hopefully shouldn't take too long, but I'd rather be painting a model than a base ! LOL

  2. Very fun scenic piece! Glad you were able to grab it on the way out and to paint it up for your current army.

Thank you for the scale shot! Yup, that looks very much the right size for a "Super Heavy" in 40K. Smashing stuff!

    1. Thank you Dai, indeed it had to come home with me, and the repaint was pretty quick to do.
Glad you like the scale shot, now all I need is a bigger shelf for it to fit on ! LOL

Clever piece of scenery, Dave, and nice to see it match your army! :-) And very nice minis! I add base texture after priming figures, since I paint it and dryrush it anyway - it gets it out of the way early on!

    1. Thank you John, a simple piece, but captures the mind, patrons of the store would spend ages looking at it ! LOL Have tried doing the basing earlier, but I kept knocking it off, I'm getting better at doing them once the unit is painted, just need to catch up on the ones I didn't though ! LOL

    1. Thank you Suber, always looking for useful, or cool pieces from the regular world, that will make an impact on my fantasy worlds ! LOL

  5. I didn't realize you worked at GW, Dave. That might explain where you got four kits to make your Dark Eldar super-vehicle! :) Did you ever meet James Workshop? He seems like an alright bloke!

To be a bit more serious, the portal looks great and will compliment your army well. All these Dark Eldar posts remind me that I'm going to have to pick up the new Dark Eldar minis that are coming out in the near future. I'd like to try my hand at painting another one in a more classic color scheme like you've done with your army.

    1. Thank you Jeff, I did and even stayed long enough to get a 5 year service tankard (they used to be quite rare, and the 10 year even more so) No t someone I remember from my time there but I left in 2001.
A simple conversion on the portal, but I thought portrayed it well. I hadn't heard of any new releases, so will have to keep an eye out for them, hopefully I can fill my missing beasts ! LOL

    2. That is very impressive but maybe it shouldn't be surprising considering your hobby acumen! Here is what I was thinking of: https://www.warhammer-community.com/2023/01/27/lvo-2023-play-the-ultimate-game-of-cops-and-robbers-with-kill-team-soulshackle/. I forgot that it is a box set. I still like the look of the Dark Eldar in there and might just grab one on eBay when its out.

    3. Thanks for the link Jeff, I had seen the Arbites but not the Dark Eldar, they're nice looking models but not something I need, so will hope for some new stuff, but probably end up making my own ! LOL

    1. Thank you Roger, when I saw it in a shop window, I instantly thought portal ! LOL With the accuracy I've seen in model railways, I'll put up with doing an armies worth of basing ! LOL

  7. So are you finished now? NOW?
Lying on the internet is soooo common. 😀😀

It’s a cool scenic piece and maybe could be an objective in a game. Stop the army from summoning something worse. 😀

    1. Thank you Stewart, I like to think of it as an oversight rather than a lie ! LOL Yes totally finished now bases and all !
You're toally right, so many scenarios could come from this piece, and hopefully I'll even right some battle reports for them.

  8. The globe will make a great centre piece in ay gae and the incubus is a wonderful model too. The comparison in size between the two flyers is amazing - thanks for that.

  9. That's a great looking terrain piece. I half expect it to tell the future or at least answer some game rules, haha! I also didn't know you worked at GW. I bet there are some stories there, though I'm not sure how much you can divulge! ;)

    1. Thank you Brian, for the money at the time of purchase you'd expect it to at least make the coffee ! LOL Oh the stories I could tell, but the contracts were more than the official secrets act ! LOL

    1. Thank you Justin, I do like to look for alternative pieces, rather than just your stock items available, I think it comes from a time when scenery wasn't easily available and you had to rely on your own ingenuity.

  11. Awesome stuff, Dave - very creative to use a plasma globe as a piece of scenery but for the Dark Eldar I can really see it working!
