ROBO RICKSHAW

For the Tatooine city area I want to have a lot of background vehicles and creatures, they may not be combatants, but will act as cover or obstructions during play. One of the bits I saw in the films and series was the Robot Rickshaw, the first time this was seen was Episode 2 Attack of the Clones, and more recently made a couple of appearances in The Book of Boba Fett. to make the model I used a lot of plasticard and greenstuff, and a bit of fabric.

To get the fabric to go between the two bars, I applied neat PVA glue to cotton material, then stuck it to the two bars, this is a lengthy process, as you keep having to tease the material as it dries to get the shape you want, but gives a really nice thin textured look, you can also use this method for making flags, below are the construction photos.

This one was based on the original screen shots from attack of the clones, and I might make the other version from Boba Fett at a later stage, that's all for this post, next time will be the challenge round up, so until then stay safe and have fun !

Cheers Dave

Crikey, Dave, that is brilliant! :-) The only worry I'd have is that the long horizontal struts that support the seating area might slowly bend over time, or have you put a support under it? Really does look very good indeed!

    1. Thank you John, there is a clear strut pinned in place under the carriage to support the weight, so the side bars hold no weight at all, and were the last thing to be added, if you look at the rear views, you can just make it out.

That has put my mind to rest, thanks Dave! :-) The clear strut is a good move and I didn't notice it until you mentioned where it was! Although you've built bigger models than this I think this one has to be my favourite!

    3. I did try to find a way to have the the side bars support the carriage but nothing worked, and I was wasting so much time on it, I went with the quick and easy option, and with where it's placed it's not easily noticeable. Size matters not, judge me by my size do you ? LOL

    1. Thank you Suber, If I remember, I'll try to show a lot more workings on how I built it on the next one for you.

  3. Haven't seen this in any SW program or film etc. ut I can be pretty sure it'll be a good match to the real thing. Great amusing scratchbuild

    1. Thank you Joe, sorry there was no reference picture, I was literally pausing the film to work from on this one, and will have to do the same for the next one which has more details.

  5. Stunning bit of work mate, I couldn't work out how you'd got the robot to hold up the rickshaw! Then I looked (very) closely and made out the flying stand 😁. Great stuff.

    Cheers Roger.

    1. Thank you Roger, I was surprised at how well the flying stand blended away, and didn't have to resort to rubbing vaseline on each frame ! LOL

  6. Spot on! Will make for a nice bit of scatter terrain in your eventual Tatooine games!

    1. Thank you Dai, it proved problematic at times, but once I stopped overthinking it, it didn't take too long, thinking of doing some different passengers to go in it as well, just can't leave things alone ! LOL

  7. Phenomenal stuff, Dave, you've nailed the look of the rickshaw and the little droid! Thanks for posting the WIP pics, it's always nice to see the structure under the paint :-)

    1. Thank you Matt, as Roger asked for proof of build, anything new I've tried to remember to take the WIP pictures, and as Suber want's to build one I'll try and do a step by step guide on the next one.

  8. Man, you really nailed this one, Dave! This is going to sound funny but the look of the chair portion is really spot-on. It looks like a picture of the real thing to my eyes. I've probably said this before Lucasfilm should just offer you a job and get it over with! Your work is that inspiring, mate!

    1. Thank you Jeff, I was very pleased with the carriage and how it turned out in the colours, but I think the shade cover actually still needs to be lighter. I am available if they want me ! LOL I've got one coming up for Monster May(hem) that even Dave Fillioni may have forgotten ! LOL

  9. Looks great Dave and instantly recognizable! The cloth bit with the glue sounds tricky, and I recall trying to do something like that in the past an utterly failing.

    1. Thank you Brian, the cloth can be tricky and takes practice and patience, neither are strong forte's on my part ! LOL Is a handy trick to have in the bag though.

  10. Thought I recognised that from the Book of Boba Fett! Now you mention it, I think I dimly recall it from AotC - were Padme and Anakin riding around in it at one stage? So simple but so elegant - one of your best SW builds I think - it looks like a commercial kit!

    1. Thank you Azazael, that is very high praise indeed, and you are spot on with all the references, as so much in Star Wars is background shots, it's easy to forget a lot of it.
