BIG GUNS

No I'm not talking AC/DC's song that was used in "Last Action Hero", although I do like a bit of AC/DC to listen to, but the total lack of Super Heavies for the Dark Eldar army, this has been the case through all versions of the codex, and 1 st edition didn't even have flyers until Forgeworld did some which then got added in 2 nd edition. All the other armies have had super heavies available, either in Epic, or through Forgeworld, and some have had them in codex and mainstream GW production.

To combat this for my own army I came up with the Darkstar this super heavy uses the dark energy technology that the Dark Eldar are renowned for but on a bigger scale, it is armed with two disintegrators as it's secondary weapons for while it's moving into position, then it uses the Darkstar cannon, this weapon generates up a large ball of Dark Energy while stationary, and then propels the energy ball with a reverse engine burst to propel it forward.

To make the model I used 4 original raider models, a couple of prism generators from the Eldar range, and some of the add ons from the kit, plus some plasticard. I'm afraid Roger I have no construction pics, as I'd already started painting bits while still in construction.

As you can see from above I've done it in my Kabal colours, and has now finished this army, still have some beasts to make and paint for my Wych army, and need to get a new raider, and then that will be all 3 Dark Eldar armies finished. That's all for this post, so until next time stay safe and have fun !

Cheers Dave

  1. No construction pics this is simply not good enough!! Tell the truth this is a production GW kit and you're just trying to pass it off as your own work to us who have no knowledge of what is produced for the Dark Eldar!! Shame on you sir! SHAME!!

Seriously though mate this is awesome and could easily pass as an unconverted GW kit, it works that well. To be honest I had no idea what you wee on about for most of the text 😵 (dark something or other 😂) but the model looks fantastic.

    Cheers Roger

    1. Thank you Roger, to be honest I started this model so long ago, I'm surprised I ever it got finished especially as I got frustrated during the build and threw it across the room ( By the way it wasn't very aerodynamic ! LOL). The painting started long before you asked for construction pics, so was definitely a case of closing the barn door after the horse has bolted on this one ! LOL
I wish GW had done a super heavy for them, would have saved me a lot of headaches during this build ! LOL

  2. Not a GW gamer I too had no idea what you were going on about for most of it 😉but I can certainly admire the finished product - looks fantastic Dave, quite an intricate model from the looks of things.

    1. Thank you Justin, it's hard to know what details to put in, as you just never know what people will know, but always glad when I can put in something that people can appreciate. There was a lot of careful cutting to be done, as I wanted to use the upper and lower part of the fuselage, once that was done the trickiest part was back blades, as the plastic rod had to be attached where there were no fixings.

  3. That looks oneheck of a difficultmodel to build upasyou've done, but the end product is very spectacular and a good model to finish an army on.

  4. looks really good. 😀 It wasn't immediately apparent to me which end was the business end until the last pic. Do you make up it's stats and points too?

    1. Thank you Stewart, hopefully you worked out that the second picture was the business end, and the last was the engines for normal forward thrust, or I failed miserably ! LOL Yes have done points and stats for the vehicle as well, not that many people come over to game anymore, so will be me using it in solo play.

    2. Lol. No I thought the engines were the double barrels….
Don’t blame yourself; I know nothing of dark elder or how things are supposed to look. 😀

    3. LOL, can see how they would resemble a gun barrel, having spent so many years looking at this model, and designing it, you forget to look at it with a fresh perspective ! LOL

  5. Whilst I can see why a DEldar player like you could have hoped for a cool super heavy for their faction, I kinda get why GW didn’t make one. DEldar are a raiding force so speed seemed more important in their design than large mech with larger guns.

    STILL(!!!)

This is freaking cool Dave! And it fits with the aesthetic ever so we’ll, along with your ideas for how it’s primary weapon works etc. Would love to see a scale shot of it next to a regular Raider so we can see just how “heavy” it is.

    1. Thank you Dai, I know what you mean, but the poor old Talos has always been slow, spent most of my games trundling up the board while all the action was on the other side ! LOL
Just glad to finally get it finished, and I will sort out some scale shots for you mate

  6. Oh, man, this is quite an interesting build. I've been taking an eye on the pics trying to sort the bits, but I have to say this is quite a seamless work, I love it!

    1. Thank you Suber, I'm sure I've probably missed a gap or two, hopefully it's the paint hiding the flaws ! LOL

  7. Had to refresh my memory on the Big Gun song, and like most AC/DC songs that one has a catchy intro lick! I can also see why this post was named Big Guns! 4+ models would have put me on the Crazy Train! But I have to say you pulled it off and this should look awesome next to your other models. If you can get them to fit all in the same room! :D

    1. Thank you Brian, do like that song but my favourite is Thunderstruck, which is used a lot in movies. Bit of a crazy project using four models to make one, but no one has ever accused me of being sane ! LOL The hardest part was getting the fuselages to align properly, once that was done it became easier, just lots of details to fill and add.

    3. LOL at least it's a decent song to be stuck in your head, I hate it when I get an advert jingle stuck there ! LOL

Dave, that is brilliant! :-) Looks really good in those colours as well! Although I did manage to work out which was the business end I couldn't really work out how big it was until I thought the scenery base is probably a CD! Impressive!

    1. Thank you John, good spot on the CD base, it is a pretty big model, now trying to fit it on the shelf ! LOL Might need another shelf.

  9. This is a jaw-dropping work, Dave! It sounds like it is budget busting too. Four kits! That is nothing to sneeze at. It does a great job of capturing Dark Eldar designs but looking even more menacing than their other vehicles.

    1. Thank you Jeff, it all came from sitting looking at a couple of raider kits, and lining them up in different configurations, and eventually finding one I liked before making the first cut, which ment not wasting any ! LOL
