WE ALWAYS CARRY A SPARE

Well this challenge came down to the wire, but have finished a few more characters for Battle Beyond the Stars, first up is Nestor, in simple terms they are clones, but more complex than normal as they have a shared collective, what one sees all see, and taste and feel, to stop from being bored to death, some leave their home planet for looking for new sensations. They can also use mind control on others as well. For the model I wanted to push the alien feel on the face, so made adjustments to make it less human, then cast up the 5 needed, they only require 4 to operate their ship but they always carry a spare ! LOL

Next up is Quopeg part of Caymen's crew he is his Kunar, now before anyone asks I have no idea what a Kunar is, and it never got explained in the film. Model wise I wanted him ready to throw his spear, as he does in the movie.

Last up is Shad of the Akir, he is the person who scours across the galaxy looking for people to help save his planet. The planet was named after Akira Kurosawa who directed the Seven Samurai, on which "The Magnificent Seven" and "Battle Beyond the Stars" was based on. Model wise I changed his weapon to a scatter blaster, as he came from a peaceful race and was unlikely to be a great shot just by picking up a gun.

Here is a group shot of all I managed to get done for the challenge, although I didn't manage to get Nanelia done which would have completed the set, I'll have to try and get that one done soon.

So that wraps up another Forgotten Heroes, will need to start working out what to do next year ! LOL Incase you missed the post, don't forget you can sign up for this years season-of-scenery-2022 on the post I've linked to, we already have a new participant, as some returning patrons. That's all for this post, so until next time stay safe and have fun !

Cheers Dave

  1. Outstanding work mate, I really don't know how you knock out such wonderful sculpts so blooming quickly! But yep you need to get the last one done and get them up for sale!

Oh and I also don't know what a "Kunar" is but I seem to think they live at No42. 😂😂

    Cheers Roger.

    1. Thank you Roger, total lack of sleep, and large amounts of coffee help in making so many models ! LOL Will get started on the last one soon, just got to finish up some painted orders, and casting for another company, then I can get cracking on her, plus I might need to start some scenery as there seems to be a challenge on ! LOL

  3. What an incredible series of posts for Forgotten Heroes, Dave. Just stunning work. These minis are excellent and absolutely nail Battle Beyond The Stars for me. Terrific work.

  6. Well done getting these finished and so very close to those in the films. The Nestor have come out well but that seemingly useless strap really annoys me ! Chap with spear is well animated if a little incongruous to my eyes ina sci-fi situation, but Akir is by far what I'd expect - great sculpt !
Always good to see a group shot too btw

    1. Thank you Joe, you can definitely see the 80's influence in some of their design choices ! LOL Agree a barbarian in a space setting is a strange choice, and in the film he didn't play a very big part at all. The last model I need to make, didn't do a massive amount in the fighting either, and just seemed to be there as a love interest for Shad, guess his planet blowing up wasn't reason enough ! LOL

  7. I’ve enjoyed your series on forgotten heroes and they’re sure to be remembered now! I’ve seen 7 samurai and of course the magnificent seven. Maybe 1 day I’ll see Beyond the stars.

    1. Thank you Stewart, it's been a fun project to do, both classic movies, and I even enjoyed the remake of the Magnificent Seven, which had a nod to Battle Beyond the Stars in it's sound track.

  8. Its cool to see more characters from this movie and I appreciate learning bits about it too. I'm not surprised to hear that Star Wars wasn't the only movie influenced by samurai movies either!

    1. Thank you Jeff, there's one more of the hero group to do, then I may do some of the villains, adding my own twist of course. The classic Samurai movies influenced a lot of directors, and definitely deserve a lot of credit.

    1. Thank you Keith, that would make sense on his costume ! LOL No worries mate, we all have busy lives so can be totally understandable. That's good to know for anyone who doesn't have the film and is interested in rewatching or watching for the first time, thanks for sharing the information.

  10. I cannot tell you how happy it makes me to see you sculpting these characters. I love Roger Corman's films. I got to see him in person at the HP Lovecraft Film Festival in 2019. Like you, he was a man who knows how to turn pulp action into art.

  12. Nice work! One of those Nestor actors reminds me a bit of Brent Spiner (Data from Star Trek). Quopeg's costume must have taken some serious work to sculpt!

    1. Thank you Faust, in the credits they only listed the two that spoke, so will have to do a bit more digging as one does have his look. Quopeg did take a while, as first you had to sculpt the muscles, then the straps that ran down the arms and legs, and finally the straps that went around the arms and legs, so just a little bit ! LOL

  13. Thanks to you, I re-watched Battle Beyond the Stars this last weekend. They must have shot to film as the transfer quality was pretty amazing in digital hd. The film is still a fun one. I also checked out Star Crash by Corman, which I had never seen. That one is definitely skippable!

    1. Glad you still enjoyed the movie, indeed Star Crash hasn't aged well, if you want a fun 80's Sci-Fi movie try Ice Pirates, the droids are hilarious.

    2. Oh yea, it's been ages since I watched Ice Pirates. Might have to give that one a go too!

  14. Well done again Dave - I don't know what/who these characters are, but the first set of them certainly manage to look disturbing enough - so well done?

    1. Thank you Azazel, you've got a real 80's treat instore for you, as apparently you can watch " Battle Beyond the Stars" on YouTube, the effects are a bit dated, but worth a watch.
