As many of you will know there was characters that appeared in the Lord of the Rings book that didn't make it into the movies. To combat this GW got a licence from the Tolkien foundation to produce models that appear in the books and not the films. The first one today is Tom Bombadil, for the colours I found a reference picture from Fantasy Flight Games, which I liked and replicated.
Next today is goblins we heard in the first movie but didn't see playing a drum.
These next two are Goblin leaders that didn't appear in the movie either, and on the second one you can see GW's influence in the sculpt as the skulls creep in ! LOL
That's all for today, there will be no posts next week, as I am away from the computer on a small holiday, and will have to try and catch up on all your posts when I return, so until next time stay safe and have fun
Cheers Dave
Oh Tolkien and his pointless character distractions like Tom Bombadil etc. I like your figure though. Uuurrghh GW and skulls!
ReplyDeleteThank you, there is probably a lot of characters in many media we look at, and question why ! LOL The figure was fun to do though, it is what GW are renowned for ! LOL
DeleteI like The Hobbit, but LotR’s just drones on pointlessly in many places. Why did The Fellowship not just use the Eagles to take the ring to be destroyed and then fly the bearer out as in the book? Simon
ReplyDeleteThank you Simon, there are many times in books, series and films, when you have to question why, and even times in history as well, but hindsight is a wonderful tool ! LOL
DeleteThe title made me think you had started some exclusive Paint Challenge. “Hurry up and sign up, or you won’t get in!!” (Cackles while pressing the FOMO button)
ReplyDeleteNice work on Tom and the Gobs! I really
like that Fantasy Flight image too. Which book is that from? I’m tempted to try and find it, if it has more nice illustrations like this? Hopefully there are more LoTR minis coming, because it’s great seeing you paint these up. Also hope the vacation is awesome! 😃
Thank you Brian, I think I run enough challenges already ! LOL
DeleteI think the image is from their card game, I found it through google search for Tom, I bet Jeff will know. There are indeed a lot more LOTR models on my desk and in the works, so lots more to come. Looking forward to the vacation, just a short one, but well earned ! LOL
I'm almost positive that is from LOTR: The Living Card Game. The art in that card game is generally fantastic though the elves are incredibly pretty looking for better and worse.
DeleteI knew if it was a card game you would know Jeff ! LOL
DeleteAh Tom Bombadil, the character that everyone seems to love but I just can't stand haha. Paint job fits him perfectly though!
ReplyDeleteThank you SD, once I found the reference picture, it was fun, and to be honest he is one of those characters That I am indifferent about ! LOL
DeleteFabulous additions Dave. I remember the uproar at Tom Bombadil's absence from the film, but having not read the books until after the film it didn't really bother me. Lovely job though.
ReplyDeleteThank you Michael, several of my friends at the time were huge Tolkien fans, and heard them being not happy about him missing a lot, but heard a lot more about Arwen's additional parts more ! LOL Whenever I'm watching a movie adaptation I go in expecting changes, so don't get disappointed ! LOL
DeleteGreat job on the LoTR miniatures. They look the part. 😀
ReplyDeleteThank you Stewart, used movie reference pictures to base the goblins on so they will match the models based on the movies.
DeleteI hope you enjoy your holiday, Dave! Tom looks great and he's actually described as having those clothes on in the book (if my memory serves) and so you often see Bombadil depicted in similar attire and colors. A fun fact about Tom Bombadil is that he's nearly unstoppable in GW's game but you're only supposed to use him in The Old Forest for thematic reasons.
ReplyDeleteThose Moria goblins were GW's attempt to fill out a force that is basically a Cave Troll and a horde of goblins :) At least now we now what the drums they were hitting for much of the Fellowship's stint in Moria looked like!
Thank you Jeff, I'm sure we'll have a great time no matter the weather ! LOL This is why I never use special characters that GW create ! LOL Interesting on the description of Tom though, I gave my copies of the books to my daughter, so haven't read them in a long time ! LOL
DeleteThat makes sense on the goblins, to make it into a full force.
Oh, you changed subjets from this merry fellow (bright blue jacket and his boots are yellow!) to some pretty dark Goblins! And you excelled in both approaches, as different as they are! Fantastic job!
ReplyDeleteThank you Suber, yes Tom was a nice palate cleanser after the dark and dingy goblins, may try to mix a few other models this way, in the future, as it breaks up the batch colours.
DeleteWell you've matched Tom Bombadil's colours with that of the illustration very well, Dave. Top marks for that paint-job. I must confess to always finding him an ill-fitting character for LotR - being much more Hobbit (and a kids book) than the darker vibes of LotR. Maybe that's just me, but I do wonder whether JRRT didn't have Tom's encounter left over from the former and simply swap Bilbo out for Frodo. LOL!! I know its something I do from time to time with my own books. :-)
ReplyDeleteThank you Simon, you may well be right about Tom being left over from the Hobbit, and it's also interesting to think about the age of Tolkien's children when he wrote each of the books, as that was who he wrote them for in the first place.
DeleteI like these Dave! :-) Although it has been a very long time since I read the books even I realised fairly early on that Tom Bombadil had been left out of the films!
ReplyDeleteThank you John, fun to do, and yes there was a lot of missing stuff in the films, which is why I liked the extended versions, as they had a lot more in them, like Merry and Pipin drinking the Ent brew ! LOL
DeleteVery cool, didn't know GW produced miniatures of characters that were not part of the movies. I especially like the goblins, with their poses they look a bit like Japanese Taiko drummers :D
ReplyDeleteThank you snapfit, I believe they got the licence from the Tolkien foundation after the three films had finished, so they could get these extras into the range, indeed they do, I really liked the ones in the movie the Great Wall, where they were using nun chucks to beat out the beat ! LOL
