MAGIC BLUNDER

Today I have some more commission pieces to show, the first one is a simple ruined corner that my client wanted to be able to use as simple cover, so I kept the inner section clear to allow models to hide in it and added more detail on the outside.

Looks like there may have been a scuffle here with all these footprints
Nothing is sacred in this realm as someone stole his boots

I had a feeling he would want snow on the walls but I left it off so he could decide which wall he wanted it on.

Here are the construction pictures so you can see the materials used.

The next piece I did was a magic disk for him to represent a magic spell.

He liked the first one and asked for four more, each being different.

He wasn't keen on the coloured glows so asked if I could turn them to just stone coloured, which I happily obliged.

Luckily I'd made all the symbols different as that was one of the criteria for them, that they were all different, which was why I'd done the different colour glows, to make it easy to distinguish between them at a glance. That's all for this post, so until next time stay safe and have fun !

Cheers Dave

  1. Nice work mate, the corpse is a nice touch. The spells are great too, though I personally prefer them with the lit up runes, but I guess as it's his commission his choice 😉.

    Cheers Roger.

    1. Thank you Roger, the corpse was my idea, I'd been waiting for the perfect piece to add it to, and this one was perfect, being so small it needed a strong interest point. Personally I prefer the glow, but as they're not for me was happy to change them.

  2. Such a lot of work into such a small scenic, but well worth the effort imho.
I don;t know what to make of the magicmarkers, they look good abd shouo do the job but I'm confuse dover what jbe they'll do.

    1. Thank you Joe, just because a piece is small doesn't mean it deserves any less attention, like with your market stalls.
From what my client told me they will be placed across the board, then if an adventurer activates one, a spell could happen or it's just a blank, hence the different symbols to make it easier to remember which one does what.

  3. Very nice little vignette! Poor bugger froze to death or was he murdered??? Love pieces like this that leave such questions for us onlookers. :)

    1. Thank you Dai, he was definitely murdered with the two arrows in his back, or maybe he was just target practice ! LOL

These are great, Dave! :-) The dead body is a nice detail! I like the magic discs both lit and plain to be honest and the detail on them is very nice!

    1. Thank you John, it was very simple to do, took a skeleton and then added the clothes so they sagged to show the flesh used to fill them out. The grey stone works well, guess I'm just used to seeing a magic glow ! LOL

  5. I keep looking for the foot prints in the snow from something scary. Is it supposed to be the red marks?
Very cool terrain all around. Nice job. 😀

    1. Thank you Stewart, yes the reddy brown are human footprints, and I did a lot to show a scuffle or it being a well used area, and yes I've now duplicated a type of footprint ! LOL

  6. Your attention to detail on 'Corpse Corner' is first-rate, Dave. What a wonderful little scenic piece you've created there. Not sure why your client didn't like the coloured tokens - perhaps dry-brushing them grey would have been a middle ground, so the runes still retained some colour in the crevices..? Still, as you say, to each their own.

    1. Thank you Simon, it was a bit of a surprise for the client, but one he really liked, the arrow fletches were a pain, but worth it in the end. When it comes to things like this I'm just happy to make sure the client is happy with the end result.

  7. Well, the others said it, but I still have to praise your attention to details. The poor bloke without boots is simply a piece of genius. You are producing some fantastic bits :)

  8. That's some great work on those, especially the added details one the corner piece. As to where those boots ended up, I have no idea, but umm....that's truly a despicable person to have done such a thing and they should really get what's coming to them...!!!.... https://doubledowndice.wordpress.com/2022/11/15/fantasy-repaints-and-rebases/

    1. Thank you Brian, the details are the bit that give them life I find, and don't worry I wont tell my client where his boots went ! LOL

  9. Awesome bit of work Dave. The addition of the corpse was a real nice touch.
I like the runes on the disc, and for me, they have to be glow side up, but each to their own!

    1. Thank you Justin, don't want to fall into the GW trap with skulls everywhere, but the occasional piece that adds to the story is okay.
I like the glow to, but each to their own, and as long as the client is happy that's the main thing in my book.

  10. Really great work on the latest Frostgrave terrain! For the glowing runes, I bet if you added a highlight in the cracks of the runes that is a tinted white, so yellowish white for the yellow one or blueish white for the blue one, would make the magic look even more realistic. I'd say give it a shot next time you mess around with runes! :)

    1. Thank you Jeff, the runes did start white, but the glaze seemed to turn more into a wash and coloured them too deeply, really should have tried to add some more white into them, lessons learned ! LOL
