FORGOTTEN HEROES 2021

This year for forgotten-heroes-2021 run by Jez, I'm going to work on some more characters for my Star Wars project, instead of delving into comic book characters like I have in previous years.

Above is a reference picture of the first character Moloch, this character was seen in the Solo movie, and was the main character in Lady Proxima's crew.

Above you can see the green I sculpted to represent the character.

And here he is all painted, the main areas were achieved with a sponge, as the reference showed a very mottled approach.

For the rest of the event, I'm hoping to work on some more models from the syndicates, and also some of the other Rebel factions.

YELLOW & ORANGE

Several other bloggers have been having problems with painting yellow & orange so here is a step by step guide to several techniques. All paints used are Games Workshop unless stated otherwise

STEP 1 from here on I will refer to the one on the left as 1, going up to 4 on the right. 1 & 2 were given a basecoat of  Yriel yellow, 3 was given a coat of Vallejo rosy flesh, and 4 was given a coat of fire dragon bright.

STEP 2  1 was then given a coat of Iyanden Yellow contrast paint,  2 was coated with Fuegan Orange wash, 3 was highlighted with vallejo elf skin, and 4 was given a wash flesh wash.

STEP 3  1 & 2 were highlighted with Yriel yellow, 3 was highlighted with Vallejo pale flesh, and 4 was highlighted with fire dragon bright.

STEP 4  1 & 2 were then highlighted with a mix of Yriel yellow and Dorn Yellow, that was very watered down, 3 was given a wash of yellow wash, and 4 was highlighted with Tau light ochre.

Now you can vary tones by changing washes to make the contrast less or more, all down to personal taste.

That's all for this post so until next time stay safe and have fun !

Cheers Dave

  1. Excellent start to Forgotten Heroes, Dave, and a wonderful tutorial on Yellow. I really liked how #3 turned out, so have ordered the relevant Vallejo paints as a result :-)

    1. Thank you Suber, I'm a humble man just trying to make his way through the universe, as someone once said ! LOL

  3. Moloch looks awesome, Dave! I think Solo is underrated despite its commercial failings and it is certainly better than the JJ Abrams trilogy so to see a cool character which will likely not get a miniature from FFG is really neat. I can't wait to see what you work on next as every update is a delightful surprise for me anyway! :)

    1. Thank you Jeff, I enjoyed Solo, and try not to think about JJ Abrams remakes, as I didn't enjoy them. I've been hearing that another company is taking over Imperial assault, so we may start to see some cool characters again, FFG will then concentrates on Legions, which is more aimed at large battles, so unlikely to see small characters like these in their range.
I'll try to keep the surprises coming ! LOL

    1. Thank you Iain, overall the film was good to me, but with the other films released either side of it, can understand the low expectations

  5. Moloch looks so good!
Solo is by far my fav Star Wars film so I’m hoping that you might have some more sculpts from the movie on the way? Lady Proxima perhaps? ;)

    1. Thank you Dai, I remembered how much you liked Solo, so thought this might appeal to you. There might indeed be a big white worm on the work desk at the moment, but you will have to wait and see ! LOL

  6. Nice work on Moloch, though I don't remember him at all if I'm honest, Solo was a bit of a seen it wouldn't bother again if I'm honest, though it wasn't a bad film, I can only really remember the scene with the two robots cage fighting (that was that one right?).

    Cheers Roger.

    1. Thank you Roger, yes the robot cage fight was in Solo, so you are thinking of the right movie. Moloch is Lady Proxima's main henchmen, and is the one who chased Han through the shipyard and had the pair of Correlian hounds

  7. Fantastic work on Moloch, Dave, the sculpt is spot on and the paintjob is superb. Nice to see I inspired your tutorial on painting yellow LOL!

    1. Thank you Matt, was a relatively easy sculpt, with the long flowing overcoat, so didn't take long to do. There were several bloggers saying they struggled, so I thought it was time to do a quick SBS to help

  8. Very interesting choice, Dave. And a very quick turnaround, so count me doubly impressed. I enjoyed Solo and thought it did well to document some of the stuff we'd read or heard about but not seen. I liked the variations on the Stormtroopers featured, which kind if inspired my Distant Stars project. Not so sure about the giant space monster near the end though...

    1. Thank you Jez, want to have some of the other crime syndicates to add to the story of the games, so this was a fun place to start. I felt it added to the stories, so was good in my book. I can see why they went for that shape to resemble the Kraken from sea fairing legend

Brilliant sculpting and painting there, Dave! :-) I must be fortunate in that I very rarely have yellow or orange to paint (Brazilian flags and that's about it)!

    1. Thank you John, glad you liked him. It's only occasionally I have to paint yellow myself, so used some spare models, to do this SBS to help out. Actually don't mind painting most colours, never used to like painting greens, until I found the right combination of paints, but all is good practice.

  10. Another cool character - and I thought I'd share my favourite part of the Solo movie here as well!
