DIAMONDS ARE ROUGH

No I'm not talking about a girls best friend, but painting diamonds. I bought these Harlequins a couple of years ago to help scale a commission I was working on, with the intention of adding them into my Dark Eldar army, as you can take them as an elite choice.

For anyone who doesn't know what they are, they are a travelling performing troupe that perform for all the Eldar races ( Dark Eldar, Craftworld Eldar, and Exodite Dragon Knights) or at least that's what they used to be, not upto date on current 40K lore. Not only were they performers, but excellent combat fighters. In Rogue Trader a small force of these could wipe out space marine forces.

I wanted a colour scheme that wasn't too jarring with the rest of my Dark Eldar, so stuck to the palette of black, red, and white, with the addition of brightly coloured hair, to give some individuality.

While I painted these, I also finished off the 2nd edition metal Death Jester to add to the unit.

A couple of years ago GW released a full army list with additional models available, I had thought of making a small force to add to my army as an allied force, but after painting this unit I'm thinking of dropping that idea as they are an absolute pain to paint ! LOL

That's all for this post, so until next time stay safe and have fun !

Cheers Dave

  1. I love these models Dave & you've done a wonderful job on painting them, as imo they are one of the hardest GW models to paint, while I never had any love for Eldar I would have loved to have had some Harlies for Spacehulkbut, but always knew the painting would be beyond me :(

    1. Thank you Frank, fully agree these are some of the hardest models to paint, my biggest stumbling block to starting them was deciding a colour scheme, that fitted and wasn't out of place with the rest of the army.
I have seen others do some great looking Harlies without the diamond pattern, so could be a way for me to go if I choose to add to them ! LOL
Knowing limitations is a honest way to look at things, occasionally I let sense prevail and avoid buying models I'm not sure I can do what I want to achieve, but not often ! LOL

  2. You've done a lovely job on these Dave, I always did like the Harlequins from back in my 40K playing days, never bought any though, the Death Jesters were always my fav's. Didn't know you could use then with the Dark Eldar too.

    Cheers Roger.

    1. Thank you Roger, I only took an interest in Eldar from 3rd edition rules, as up until that point I'd only played marines, the models have certainly come a long way from back then. Death Jesters were always my favourite too.
Yes Harlequins were the only unit available to all Eldar, as they travel and perform for all, but I think things have moved further now with the Ynnari which has a combination of craftworld and dark Eldar

  4. Very cool Dave; I've always loved Harlequins. Much like the later Brettonian Knights, the appeal for me was that each one is an individual, regardless of their place in the unit. There need not be any unifying scheme so you're free to go wild.

    1. Thank you Keith, indeed it's a unit you can as you say go wild on, I kept it muted to tie in with the army but could have used every colour in my range if I had wanted to

  6. weird, wonderful and superbly animated. Your colour choice makes them look both fascinating and evil.
An all round stunning force (and the "jester" is easily their equal.
