RUINS

Have finally finished the first piece of scenery for my challenge ( I know not very good seeing I set the challenge ! LOL) being ruins I've gone for a very dirty rusty look, as it's been sat for a while and I've also included blast damage, to represent being in a battlefield.

You may have noticed that I've also included broken windows in some of the frames, this was achieved with clear acetate cut to a ragged shape and fracture lines with a scalpel, I've also stippled on some dirt, as I couldn't imagine anyone getting a window cleaner in.

Here you can see I've added in some chaos graffiti, if you have read the Gaunt's Ghost novels you'll know who the blood pact are.

Here you can see some extra rust details which I've added in selected areas

Last picture has some of my Kroot snipers taking up position to lay down suppressing fire.

Just a quick post today, so until next time stay safe and have fun !
Cheers Dave

  1. Excellent work, sir! The details such as battle damage and the broken windows really add to a magnificent bit of scenery. I guess I'm going to have to read the Gaunt's Ghosts books now.

    1. Thank you Matt, was worth doing the extra work for the effect. The Gaunt's ghost novels are well worth it in my opinion, and some of Dan Abnett's best work in my opinion

  2. Very nice work Dave, you don't have to finish first just because you set the challenge! Jez is proof of that (LOL).

Gaunt's Ghosts is the one of the few 40K novels I've read, I think it was the first one, I got it as a sample along with the Gaunt's Ghosts figures set. It was a good read as I recall, I particularly liked the one character, but can't remember his name, he was a sniper and was one of the figures too, he was kneeling down firing his las-rifle.

OOOO what was his name....that's going to annoy me now!

    Cheers Roger.

    1. Thank you Roger, I know but as I do it for a business it would be a very poor show ! LOL
The Character your thinking of Larkin, or Larks to his friends, the series takes them on many different adventures, they're all very good, even the short stories one that was done by other writers while Dan was getting his medication sorted when he was diagnosed with Epilepsy, he then returned to carrying on the stories himself and didn't miss a beat

    2. Thanks Dave, Larkin that was the name, should of remembered that as I used to play with a lad over the road from me when I was a child whop had that as a surname.

      Cheers Roger.

    3. No problem mate, couldn't see you suffer as I knew the answer, some of the lesser characters I don't remember so well, but the main ones I have no problem with

  3. What a marvellously grim and dirty look you've achieved, Dave. Excellent attention to detail :-)

    1. Thank you Simon, as it was a ruin I thought a dirty worn look would suit it better, or it was the imperial cleaners holiday ! lol

    1. Thank you Harry, I thought the extra touches would add another level to the piece.
The Ghost novels are my favourite too, and have got to meet Dan, his detail and background he puts into them is excellent

    1. Thank you Michael, before they went in and on I wasn't too sure on the piece, sometimes it's that little extra bit needed to bring it all together, and then sometimes it makes a total mess and you have to start again ! LOL

    1. Thank you Iain, I struggle with grimy as I try and be too precise, so have been trying a new technique of holding the brush further up the handle, so I have less control when applying the dirt.
It's ticking along at the moment, but nowhere near as busy as normal, which is understandable with these times

  9. Great work, Dave. I remember tables and tables of gothic ruins like this (although not painted nearly as well) back in my 40K days. Damn it man! You're making me nostalgic!

    1. Thank you Keith, It became the mainstay for 40K boards, always liked a bit of variance myself. As long as it's only nostalgia and not the itch to get back in to it, you should be okay, it's why I follow so many different blogs, I can enjoy seeing all the different aspects without obliging to buy ! LOL

  10. How much are you planning to build and paint of this lovely terrain? Getting a large collection already.

    1. Thank you Dai, I've currently only got one more piece to paint, which is the sunken section that comes with the statue and Aquilla. I probably would like to add to this, when time and funds allow
