CHALLENGE OGRE

Recently it was discussed over on Roger's blog rantingsfromunderthewargamestable to do a challenge where we all painted the same model, to see all the different interpretations people would come up with. I offered to sculpt a model and cast it so we would have something a bit different, and all who wanted to participate could get hold of the model for a £1 plus postage to their part of the world, as we cover a lot of the globe. after a couple of posts by Roger the model that was decided upon was a  “Savage, armoured fantasy Ogre with a hand weapon”. Now there are many different styles of Ogre depending on what system you play, but I wanted to do something different, so I went back to Mythology as a starting point, I went with Norse, as the Oriental version of a Ogre looks very demon like, Google says An ogre (feminine: ogress) is a legendary monster depicted as a large, hideous, man-like being that eats ordinary human beings, especially infants and children. I started with this as my basis, and came up with this model.

Knowing a lot of the painters that have expressed an interest, I've tried to include something for everyone, plenty of surfaces for heraldry, lots of textures, and a large portion of bare skin, if tattoo's are your thing. The model will be cast in three pieces, left and right hand, and the main central part of the model. As we all suffer from dropsy (Roger) I will be reinforcing the casts with metal pins, to make it less fragile. I will supply either a square or round base depending on your preference, or none in Roger's case ! LOL I've had a couple ideas to make the postage easier as well, Keith expressed that I had some items in my store that he wants to get so I will combine his Ogre with his order ( anyone else thinking of doing this mark Challenge Ogre in the notes, when ordering), I'm not sure how much of a saving the next idea would make, as I don't know your local rates, but I could send all the Ogres for one country to a single person and they would then distribute to the others, sharing the initial cost to get it overseas, if this idea is feasible, you would need to decide who was going to be the distribution hub. Now I just have to resist the temptation to paint this model before September ! LOL There is still plenty of time to join in the challenge, just pop on over to Roger's blog and let him know, or comment on here, and I will pass on the details.

That's all for this post, so until next time stay safe, and have fun !

SSHH PLEASE

Fancied a change again, so completed another Librarian for my Night Hawks chapter, originally I had planned to convert this model into Silas Hand the Inquisitor, but as you may remember I got the official model they released, so this model has sat in limbo for some time. It was originally a Librarian model, so it was a simple enough conversion to bring it back to that role, I decided to give it a force staff, and as it had a psychic hood I went for Codicer  level psyker, plus gave it a jump pack to make him quick across the battlefield.

I remembered to take some pictures of the conversion as well, shown below.

At some point I really need some Lexicanium level psyker, but as the models have long been out of production, I'm probably going to have to convert some, but that's a project for another time, hopefully the next post will be the Ogre for Roger's challenges as I'm about 70% through on the sculpt, as long as there are no recounts ! LOL So until next time stay safe and have fun !

TRYING TO IMITATE ART

The above picture is by John Blanche, and is pretty well known in the wargaming world, now I'm not a huge fan of most of John's work, and don't like the style. Before you start stoning me, art is very subjective, he's done a few I enjoy, but for the most part not an artist I like, this piece is one of the few I do like. Not long after this appeared on the cover of White Dwarf a limited edition model was released, which I was able to get a copy of, and back then I painted my models pretty quickly and didn't have a mountain of models that needed attention ! LOL Below is what I achieved the first time round.

Pretty basic really, and no shield. It was painted with enamel paints back then, so I thought it would be fun to see how far I could push it this time. I added a few details with greenstuff after striping the original paint, these were mostly the small spikes that weren't cast on the original model, and of course the iconic shield. This was then painted with acrylics this time.

As I was never likely to use it in a game, I  decided to try and replicate the background from the original art, even when I took art I was never a fan of painting backgrounds, so tried as best as I could to make a decent representation, it's not perfect but I'm happy with the final outcome.

Above shows the construction of the base better, so you can see how I made the base and background. That's all for this post, so until next time stay safe and have fun !

TWICE THE LOVE ?

As it turns out from a recent post, a lot of us like the Gonk Power Droid, but what about the Plunk Power Droid ? These were mainly seen in the Clone Wars cartoon, but also made an appearance in Star Wars Rebels, and more recently, in the Book of Boba Fett live action. You didn't see it ! hardly surprising as it was only there for a few seconds while Boba and Fennec tried to retrieve his Firespray, and was in the back of the shot. Here is what Wookiepedia has to say :

The PLNK-series power droid,[2] nicknamed the plunk droid for its distinctive sound,[8] was a heavy-duty power droid[9] that held tibanna gas.[10] It was manufactured by Industrial Automaton during the Clone Wars,[1] where they saw widespread use in the Republic Navy.[9]

As I am doing a lot for Jabba's Palace, I opted for painting mine the same as from the live action show, but at some point would like to paint up other variations.

Below are the greens, but I started with two Gonk droids as the basis, then added the relevant shapes to make it a Plunk Droid.

While busy making Greens I have been painting some other random mini's which I will hopefully have to show soon, so that's all for this post, so until next time stay safe and have fun !

YOU MUST BE THRAWN'S ASSASSIN

Today I have a Imperial character from Star Wars Rebels Rukh, now I did find a 3D print, but it was based off of the comic book version, and I really wanted one based off the cartoon series so built my own version, I have found some nice prints of Grand Moff Tarkin, and Colonel Yularen, that I hope to pick up at some point, to add to my Imperial characters. Here is what Wookipedia says about Rukh :

Rukh was a male Noghri from Honoghr who served as the bodyguard and assassin of Imperial Grand Admiral Thrawn. Thrawn used Rukh's name as the override command for his sparring droids. Rukh was an excellent tracker and fighter with a strong senses of smell. During Darth Vader's mission with Thrawn, Rukh snuck around the barracks where Vader's personal forces resided, clearly not trusting them. In 1 BBY, Thrawn employed Rukh's services in hunting down members of the Spectres rebel cell and the Lothal resistance group. Rukh played an important role in capturing the Spectres leader and Rebel Alliance General Hera Syndulla during the failed attack on Lothal. Rukh would later see further action against the Spectres in the lead up to the Liberation of Lothal. Rukh perished at the hands of Garazeb Orrelios, who electrocuted him while fighting inside the Imperial Complex.

Below is the painted version of the model, and the reference picture below.

Below is the green stuff shot to prove I sculpted it ! LOL

Have a few other characters on the workbench and some Monsters in preparation for Monster May(hem), plus looking at ideas for Roger's challenge that I will be sculpting, for anyone that hasn't checked out his challenge, we will all be painting the same model that is sculpted by me, probably the challenge will be taking place in September but the date is still to be confirmed, the current question is what monster will we be painting, Dragonkin, Snakeman, Ogre, or Troll, if you want to take part, you can add your input here rantingsfromunderthewargamestable . That's all for this post, so until next time stay safe and have fun !
