ORKTOBER

October is certainly a month for challenges, not only is there Zomtober, and Apocalypse Me, but there are two other challenges running, Dreadtober, where you get your Dreadnought's painted ( all of mine are ! LOL) there is also Orktober, the two main protagonists in this are Luke https://imperialrebelork.wordpress.com/ and Wudugast ( sorry don't know his blog). When Luke was laying down this years challenge, he might have challenged me to paint an Ork (okay he did ! LOL). Now I don't normally do Orks, and all the cowboy Orks I have are already finished, but I found two in the bits box, the first was a Games Day Ork from Gorkamorka, I used purple as a base colour, and there is a touch of orange in the highlight.

Next is an Ork that came free with a issue of White Dwarf, I did the same on his skin.

Now I'm out of Ork's unless I sculpt some more Cowboy ones, but that's a worry for another year, so until next time stay safe and have fun !

Cheers Dave

  1. Welcome to Orktober! Where none of us stand a chance of winning, lol! I swear IRO spend the last 3 years planning and gluing his Ork City together! I like your Orcs, those old models have so much character and I loved the Orc Blood Bowl minis from around that time too!

    1. Thank you Brian, I was under no illusion that I wouldn't win, in fact very likely to be in last place with my meagre score ! LOL Just thought it would be fun to take part and support another challenge ! LOL I think Gorkamorka was a real turning point on the style of the Ork's and it filtered across to other games, but I do like the comic element returning recently, which disappeared for a while.

Nicely done, Dave! :-) You've painted more than me for Orktober, although I'm hoping to have an Apocalypse Me entry! You can find Wudugast at https://convertordie.wordpress.com/

    1. Thank you John, very rare for me to paint an Ork, although at one time I considered making a Snakebite army, which would have Squigoths in it, but never came to pass. Thanks for the link I will check it out.

  3. Cool! I love both of them! The green/purple combo works nice on the skin and with those brown clothes, so they are a total win! I don't think I'm able to get myself into the competition, but I'll be keeping an eye!

    1. Thank you Suber, I've used the purple green orange combo a couple of times now, but normally on bigger models, so was very pleased it worked on these smaller ones. Wanted the clothes to be quite muted so went with the one colour, to keep the focus on the skin.
With the Orks you do that is such a shame, but your zombie pilots are awesome

  4. Nice pair of Orks, what's this two challenges not enough for you eh? 😁

Like the purple underpainting on the flesh, works very well.

    Cheers Roger.

    1. Thank you Roger, I know who would be crazy enough to add more challenges ! LOL
Using the triad of colours is strange, as you apply the layers your mind screams it's not right, but I do like the end result, I may try using green as a base colour for skin tone at some point, just to see the effect.

  5. It's good to see a unique (afaik) take on orks with the purple untetones to their flesh and the pastelle green flesh. These look really good,

    1. Thank you Joe, the greens I used are the same as I used for the Cowboy Orks, but the purple and orange, totally change the end effect, glad you like this take on them.

  6. I really like the purple tones on the green skin, Dave, it gives them a bit of a different look and works very well. Both these chaps are ready to do some krumpin' as soon as they stop squabbling LOL!

    1. Thank you Matt, I really like it as it adds to the alien feel of them, and it's good to experiment with colours. If i put a couple of humies infront of them, should ease the squabbling ! LOL

  7. I really must do Orktober one year, but its already a crowded month for challenges as it is. Excellent work on your behalf though, Dave, for ticking it off the completion list and with a cracking pair of greenskins too. I especially like the Games Day Ork from Gorkamorka - but not its price on eBay, LOL!!!

    1. Thank you Simon, you're not wrong on how crowded the month is, and unfortunately I'm not as clever as Roger fulfilling 3 challenges with a pair of models ! LOL They were a fun exercise, and a nice break from dead skin as well, as for Ebay prices, they are crazy at the moment, and keep getting worse, I think the only thing I get from there now are 3D prints, as they seem more reasonable ! LOL

  9. There are certainly plenty of challenges going and I'm glad you can participate in another. These classic Ork sculpts are awesome and you did a really nice job painting them up. I bought a box of plastic Orks from this era of 40k and never finished them. In my defense, there were an awful lot of them in a single box back in those days! :)

    1. Thank you Jeff, wanted to support Luke and Wudugast with their yearly challenge, and they've actually had a fair few people join in this year. I remember the good old days when you got lots of models for your money ! LOL Some of those sculpts were great, if a little unstable on the smaller bases, and they were easy to convert being multipart kits rather than the new plug in style of the current kits.

  10. Great looking orks! I especially like the purple in the skin, unconventional but works really well! Also the Gorkamorka Nob is an absolute classic, love the sculpt.
I wasn't aware that this challenge was open for all, might have to enter last minute - I do have a post ready, might as well publish it sooner than planned, haha :D

    1. Thank you Snapfit, it's the traditional art triad colours, using purple for shade and orange for highlight, but the orange is so subtle it's hard to see against the green ! LOL It was one of the best miniatures in the range in my opinion.
Yes Luke mentioned in his blog, hoping to get more people involved this year, and I know quite a few of us participated, not to the level Luke and Wudugast did, but that's okay as it's all about support for each other.

  11. Gorkamorka was such a cool game and I am everso envious that you have that fig! It was such a good sculpt!

Love the purple in the recesses. From far away those Boyz have to look very effective.

    1. At the time it came out I did Muties but was given this model for working at Games Day, where it sat in it's packet until now ! LOL The skin does stand out even from a distance, so is very effective.
