GIBBERING HORDE

One of the cool things the Lost and the Damned army list added was the Gibbering Horde, effectively they were minor Demons for other factions other than Nurgle, but followed the same rules as Nurglings, I was hoping they would release some models for them, but that never came to pass, so was going to require some creativity on my part. As this army was originally going to be for a tournament list, I started by getting a chaos familiar for each stand, so GW would have no problem with the bases, then set about building the rest. I tried to follow the basic premise for Slaanesh throughout, with using ideas that had appeared in their other demons, and working on the premise of excesses. I went for the Slaanesh number 6, so had 6 models to each base and 6 bases.

Since it is no longer part of a tournament list, I've moved them into my Demon Army list, which is now completed, if you want to see the rest of the army, it's all in the Emperor's Children section, Not doing too bad this year, as I've now finished two armies this year, and one unit away of finishing a third.

Will have to wait for Keith to adjudicate if these count towards Monster May(hem) due to their diminutive size, so until next time stay safe and have fun !

Cheers Dave

  1. Nice work on these mate, some of the familiars I recognise (as they have been about for years), some I don't, though I couldn't always tell which were yours and which were commercial figs(which is to your credit of course!). I did recognise the naughty little lady with the horns and tail in the fifth stand😉. She was one I was always going to get (but never did), There was a little construct/golem one with a club over his shoulder I always liked too, though I don't see him here (doesn't mean he's not, just that I blind as a bat!).

Anyway I digress, lovely work mate. I can't see Keith knocking these back!

    Cheers Roger.

    1. Thank you Roger, good spot on the little demonette, the Golem with the club isn't in these, so you haven't gone blind ! LOL There is one stand that doesn't actually have a familiar on it, as I couldn't find a sixth I liked, but thank you for the very high praise that you can't always tell.
Be nice if Keith allows them, but would fully understand if he didn't due to their size.

  2. Oh, sir, this is most awesome! Really inspiring work! The swarms of nightmarish creatures, specially those feasting on the Guards, are spectacular :O

    1. Thank you Suber, used the art of Adrian Smith, who did a lot of GW artwork for inspiration, and the basics that GW used on all of their demons

  3. What a great set of little evil sods, Dave! I recognise some of the old GW familiars, especially the daemonette; I have one (the one with the pumpkin head) but haven't painted him yet. Good stuff sticking to six for the magic number!

    1. Thank you Matt, if your going to do something this mad, you may as well go all the way, and have it set to the Chaos number ! LOL
The familiars gave me a good base to start from, but was limited on the ones that would fit with the theme, do remember the pumpkin head one.

  4. I wanna make sure I understand this right: on the six bases you have 1 GW thingy and 5 other sinister things that you sculpted?
So you sculpted 30 demons each one more demonic than the last? Even if they are small sinister things that is largely impressive to me as I could never imagine being able to do that.
And it would give me nightmares. 😀

    1. Thank you Stewart, I fully sculpted 31 as I couldn't find a sixth familiar I liked, and had to convert 4 of them to either be in the right pose, or change the aesthetics to fit better with the overall theme, not so impressive as it's taken me since 2003 to finish them ! LOL
My staff at GW used to joke that my mind was so scary that even demonettes wouldn't go there ! LOL

  5. Awesome collection of little greeblies - and so much more impressive that you sculpted almost all of them yourself!

    1. Thank you Azazel, it would have been nice if GW had supported their idea with models, but does mean I have a very unique horde ! LOL

  6. Oh I think they count alright Dave as their not the kind of thing you would want to meet in the park on a dark night, or anywhere else for that matter 😊 excellent work mate 👌👍

    1. O and I'd like to think they'd count for the MM challenge. They're just tiny Monsters!

    2. Thank you Dai, I see which patron you follow mate ! LOL Sometimes I really should dial back these projects as every unit becomes a mammoth task in itself, but then it wouldn't be me ! LOL Hope Keith agrees, but we'll have to wait and see.

    3. Yup, always been a firm fan of Nurgle and his daemons. Have a load all primed and waiting paint too.... for.... whenever. LOL

    4. Did some a long time ago, but with my style at the time, they didn't look great, was trying to paint too precise, and they really needed a different approach, who knows maybe I'll try again sometime ! LOL

Nicely done, Dave! :-) Quite a bit of variation there between bases as well!

    1. Thank you John, wanted them to each have their own character to a base, not just 6 bases of the same 6 models, which would have been the easier route ! LOL

  10. These are really cool, Dave! I miss GW's sculpts like this. They did quite a lot of them in Warhammer Fantasy as I recall. Some of them are still kicking around but most of the ones that exist are from a long time ago and will probably get retired by GW eventually which is a shame.

    1. Thank you Jeff, yes some of the old models really had character, whereas some of the newer stuff feels generic or lacking soul, one of the drawbacks of using 3D sculpting I guess as the program allows you to mirror, and the faces end up looking odd.
