BALANCE

For this post I have two very different models, from two different sources, but as the title suggests, it's all about balance. The first model is one I've made based off a creature I saw in the series "The Book of Boba Fett" it's called a sand bat this is what Wookiepedia has to say about it :

The sand bat was an animal native to the desert planet of Tatooine. The Tusken Raiders used its venom as a weapon to kill Krayt dragons during rites of passage.[1] The species crowed at sunrise.[2]

Made with greenstuff, wire frame, and the wings are acetate to keep them thin, painting I've tried to match the reference picture below.

When I first saw it and listened to it crow, it reminded me of the 1981 film "Caveman" starring Ringo Starr, in the movie every so often you'd see a dinosaur and it would either crow, or howl like a coyote ! LOL

The next model is an old 1980's model by GW which was sold as a Chaos Demon, this was back before they had come up with the different factions, so all the demons were generic, but I still get a very Slaaneesh feel about it, and used this as a basis for one of the gibbering hoard, I have no idea what to use it as yet, could be another spawn model, or a demonette herald.

I'll have to wait for Keith's adjudication if they both count towards my Monster May(hem) total. When I recently visited my local GW to pick up some paint, the manager made a comment that I didn't do their hobby anymore, now as you've seen recently, I still work on 40K armies, but do I follow GW's throw away what you've got and get this new shiney model instead, then I guess no I don't and I'm good with that, and I'm happy with what I do.

That's all for this post, so until next time stay safe and have fun !

Cheers Dave

  1. Awesome work on the sand bat, Dave, you've really got the look and colours nailed! Again it's a mini that's so good that if I didn't know you'd made it I'd think you bought it. And I love that old Chaos daemon, it's definitely got a touch of Slaanesh about it :-)

    1. Thank you Matt, that is high praise indeed mate. I wasn't sure on the colours until it was finished so glad they worked out.
I did have the bigger demon that was sat down that was released at the same time, but sold that one quite a few years back, but as this one had Slaanesh aspects I kept this one.

  2. Nice looking critters. Nice as in they look nicely painted but they definitely don’t look nice or friendly. 😀
I didn’t e the sand bar in the Bobba series but I only watched a few episodes before I grew bored.

    1. Thank you Stewart, I get what you mean ! LOL
If you only watched a few episodes then easy to understand not seeing it, as it was in episode 5 in the last third of the episode

  3. Pretty darn good representation of the bat mate! Very nice painting on the wings to get the colouring right too.

The daemon mini is a real classic! Pre-slotta?

    1. Thank you Dai, the wings took longer than normal, had to keep brightening up, and then darkening down to get the right tones all over, but was worth the extra effort.
Very early slotta, whereas the other demon I had was pre-slotta

    1. Thank you Iain, had to change the pose slightly so it would stand on it's own without a base, but happy with the overall look, and nice to have the demon finished, long time coming ! LOL

    1. Thank you John, I like the sand bat more as well, probably because of the extra work made it more rewarding.

  6. Nice work on the sand bat, I'd say it was spot on! Don't remember that demon (but was never a big chaos fan tbh), I don't like this throw away and buy new attitude GW seem to have these days (I understand it, but do like it!). Nice work on your by the way.

    Cheers Roger.

    1. Thank you Roger, Did watch the 5 seconds it was on screen quite a few times to get the feel of the creature, then constantly had the screen shot up when sculpting it, just to make sure. Had a chaos army in first edition and was always looking for the next heavy hitter as it were. The ethos as been a part of GW for a long time, it was there when I was in the company, had people from head office telling me I should remove my white dwarf featured army from the cabinet as it had too many old models in it ! Obviously I ignored them ! LOL

  7. Lovely bit of green-stuff sculpting, Dave, followed by a vintage Citadel daemon. You've such an eye for detail when it comes to Star Wars denizens. I wonder where you find the time to sculpt anything else, LOL!!!

    1. Thank you Simon, the demon was a quick win compared to the bat ! LOL Time is different to an insomniac it's more what else can I do until I can finally sleep ! LOL Actually got a few new models and scenery finished just waiting to be moulded, guess I need to spend a bit more time in the shed instead of sculpting ! LOL

  8. Oh, those are two totally different works and they both are great, each one in its own way. Fist of all, the sand bat is magnificent, I love your sculpt, it's a pretty nice rendition. The other creature is definitely Slaanesh, no doubt, and you did a pretty awesome work too!
Well, I'm on your side, I don't do *their* hobby anymore, and I'm truly happy with that! :D

    1. Thank you Suber, the bat was a must have for me being a denizen of Tatooine and was happy to get it done for Monster May(hem), and the demon was nice to finish as it has sat unloved since the 1980's when it was released, and is now completed.
Indeed, it's all about personal balance, and as long as were happy with it, that's all that matters ! LOL

  9. Great work on both, Dave. Always impressed with your sculpting work, and the second model looks like it should be commentating a pod race for some reason. An odd comment from the GW guy. I can only guess it was related to you buying/painting/playing their "latest and greatest" - or perhaps not doing that!

    1. Thank you Azazel, I question my sculpting all the time, but we are our worst critics ! LOL Should have painted the demon in two different colours as a nod to the pod racing ! LOL
Luckily enough I have thick skin, and will still buy what I want from them, but will not have a retailer tell me what I want, and if it doesn't fall into their idea of what hobby is, I'm good with it ! LOL

  10. Haha, Azazel is right about the demon looking like he's from Episode One! I agree with your sentiment on GW. Between their FOMO tactics and the way they push people to keep buying new stuff, I don't think I could invest in their games at the moment. I don't think there was any value in the manager's comments and while I'm sure he didn't mean any harm or offense, they were not well thought out. You should do whatever brings you joy in the hobby and you still might buy their products even if it isn't miniatures so that kind of sentiment is not helpful.

    1. Thank you Jeff, it certainly does have the commentator vibe about it, with less clothes ! LOL GW have always been the same, and over the years it has become more about sales rather than hobby, which is a shame, as when they get it right they have a great hobby. It will never change my purchasing habits or what I'm interested in, and will always do what's right for me.
