IMPERIAL TRANSPORT

You didn't really think I'd be able to stay away from my Star Wars project for too long did you ? Today I have a recent gift from my wife, I had intended to build one of these, but have got a 3D printed one to start with, before I go into the model I want to share a bit of it's history.

In 1979 Palitoy/Kenner released a toy for there Star Wars range that had not appeared in a film the Imperial Transport.

The one on the left was the original, and the one on the right was a later version based off the next design.

The next time it was seen was in the TV series Star Wars Rebels, which it appeared in all the series.

It then got it's live action debut in the Mandolorian season 1, with a updated version again.

So that's a little of it's heritage, the 3D model I've got has elements from all 3 versions, but is heavily influenced by the first version.

I like the model, but may well make another one, based on the later versions at some point. That's all for this post, so until next time stay safe and have fun !

Cheers Dave

  1. Lovely one. I remember seeing this vehicle (couldn't say what version) as a child in the comics of old (those made between the first two movies). I don't think I still keep them, but I'll try to get physical evidence of what I'm saying!
Anyway, cool job on this one!

    1. Thank you Suber, if it's the one I'm thinking of, it would be version 1, between films one and 2, they also released a special comic, with the toy as well. If you still had those comics, they'd be worth a lot of money now.

  2. Great stuff Dave! Not knowing a thing about those GW models you were posting this fella here is glad your back in the galaxy far far away lol!
This is one of the things I really love about the Filoni-verse, getting something like this odd and unique vehicle into canon 😀

    1. Thank you Ivor, I'm afraid I've got a lot more 40K posts to come if I want to finish these old armies, but I'll try to make sure I keep posting up more Star Wars posts inbetween to keep it interesting for you mate, as I enjoy your comments.
Dave Filoni has done a lot to bring into cannon a lot of cool things, and I hope he continues doing so, and if he wants some suggestions, I'd be happy to oblige ! LOL

  3. Ooo, love it, Dave! It's a great 3D model and you've painted it up really well to fit in with a Mandalorian setting. I vaguely remember the brown toy version but never owned it, I think a friend had one. I do remember those original stormtroopers and how they'd go yellow over time LOL!

    1. Thank you Matt, I never owned one, but did remember when it came out, the picture above was one I found on Google, and that old plastic loved to discolour didn't it ! LOL

  5. cool. I saw all of the Mandolorian but don’t remember the vehicle, guess I’ll just have to watch it again!
(I’m guessing it was near the end when they were posing as Imps).
Nice job and nice gift. 😀

    1. Thank you Stewart, it was in episode 7 towards the end, after the Death Troopers had just killed the officer and Stormtroopers, just before Moff Gideon arrived, it's like a 5 second screen shot, of it pulling up, and all the troops it was carrying pouring out.
My wife is a star, and has me make long lists of models I'd like, so she can surprise me with them, at unexpected times.

  6. I remember that, a mate of mine at school had the original "biege" one (mind you I think he had most of the vehicles and sets, spoilt!), I just had figures myself, but I think they are squirreled away up in the loft somewhere. Very cool model, and nicely painted too.

    Cheers Roger.

    1. Thank you Roger, I know what you mean, I mostly had just the figures, I do have one vehicle, that I want to add to my Star Wars project, but need to build an interior for it, and add some of the exterior detail, at some point. As 3D prints go, I like this one a lot, and was able to smooth out a lot of the ridges before painting.

  8. I remember this toy because my friend had one! Did anyone really buy enough stormtrooper action figures to fill it up; or did they just have everyone (Threepio, Chewie, Greedo, etc...) hitching a ride on the sides? Love the print; and although I watched the Mandalorian, I never recognized the transport as the old toy!!

    1. Thank you Keith, I certainly wouldn't have had enough Stormtroopers as I only had the one ! LOL I think where I had seen it soi often in Star Wars Rebels, I instantly recognised it in the Mandolorian, and went wow a live action version, plus from a modelling perspective, it gave me a new variation. When I get round to building one, I'll probably do the Rebels version, then if it doesn't drive me mad, try the Mando version later.

  9. Never had one of these back in the day. Bit of a silly design unless those TK's were supposed to be counted as "ablative armour"? LOL

Love that so much is available now 3D printing is a thing. And I guess it'll only get better as time goes on.

    1. Thank you Dai, as agent Kallus would say, "I have great many of them" so they probably don't mind using them as cannon fodder ! LOL
The world of 3D printing has certainly opened up the amount of options, and as you say as time goes on it can only get better, both in quality and availability.

  11. This is a cool vehicle that I wasn't overly familiar with and honestly, it seems like an imperial design because I think the stormtroopers flooding out of it, are basically sitting ducks to counter fire! You did a great job painting this up and it should fit in well with the rest of your Star Wars collection.

    1. Thank you Jeff, indeed the Empire is not renowned for worrying about the safety of their Stormtroopers ! LOL As all the Empire vehicles are a form of grey it ties in well.
