THE WEEK THAT WASN'T !

Since finishing Jabba's palace, my health decided to give me a real beating, but not to let it win I decided to finish a model that would still count for the Season of Scenery but has been sat around for far too long.

I actually started painting it earlier in the year for one of Ann's challenges, until I ran out of paint half way through, I had ordered the paints straight away but took over a month to arrive, and by then I was working away on lots of Star Wars stuff for other challenges.

Of all the models I've ever bought from Forgeworld, this was the worst in quality, as ever panel was bent or twisted and had to be straightened with heat before putting together. The model design itself I thought was brilliant and turned the ugly duckling that is the Storm Raven, into the super sleek and aggressive looking Storm Eagle. Normally I have thee legs retracted and mount the flyer on a flying stand, but for once I thought it would be cool to have the legs out so I can use my landing platform. Painting wise I've stuck with my normal colour scheme for my Space Marine chapter.

I've kept with Iain's advice and made it look individual with chipping and named the craft in a similar fashion to pilots during WW2. I've also added heat bloom on all the engines. Normally I put the chapter symbol on the tail fin, but as these were aa lot smaller, and not very flat I went with the symbol on the side doors, and sculpted the hawk and moon before painting.

Hoping this week my health levels back out and can get back on with creating some scenery from scratch, so until next time stay safe and have fun !

Cheers Dave

  1. I hope you feel better soon! Couldn't you have at least scratch built a Tie Fighter or X-wing for us? ;) I think that would help us come down off the Star Wars high of the previous project. Its a shame that the quality of the resin and fit were low. I thought that FW was supposed to be even higher quality than GW's standard fare after all! Regardless of that, it looks very nice and is something to be proud of, especially considering how you've been feeling.

    1. Thank you Jeff, unfortunately the illness I have will never go away, and there are weeks where it try's to get the better of me, but as long as I can keep pushing through as much as possible, I will not let it beat me. Forgeworld on the whole is supposed to be better quality, unfortunately I got a bad one, luckily I had enough skills to combat the problem, to still get it put together. Happy with how it turned out and means I've only got one marine large flyer left to paint from my collection, an original metal Thunderhawk, But I've still got to finish building it, as I've converted it to have more details, like crew and some moving parts ! LOL

  2. Despit all the problems you've had with this model, it turned out really well, though I must admit the first picture threw me a little and took me the other three to figure out what I was looking at (old age, bad eyesight etc.). I love the little extras you've added to it too, they rally shout out as an 'original' allof your own, .
I too have good and bad days but luckily for me I have many more good ones than bad - drugs and alcohol I find to be the best remedies in more or less equal measure.
Hope you are in the queue for mr good days too ! - Take care.

    1. Thank you Joe, the front elevation doesn't give a lot away so fully understandable, it's actually a lot shallower than the original model Forgeworld based it on.
For me it's better moments in the day, if I can get a few each day then I can get something done, and don't fall too far behind with other peoples blogs ! LOL The drugs they have me on, don't allow alcohol and now haven't had a drink in 12 years !

  3. You didn't get a "Bad one" Dave. From what I've read since that model came out is that they have been a shit show from the start to put together due to warped parts. Which is a shame cos it definitely is the best Space Marine Flyer model by far.

Regardless, now it'd done and painted up it looks bloody good mate.

Hope this bout of your health stuff buggers off soon so you can get back to doing what you love most.

    1. Thank you Dai, that makes me feel better about saying how bad it was, as I don't like to disrespect other manufacturers for their endeavours.
Unfortunately my health isn't likely to get any better, just how many slots in a day I get ! LOL It's like playing Russian roulette apart from someone's loaded between 3 to six bullets in the revolver ! LOL

Sorry to hear your health's been on a low, Dave, but it doesn't show in the quality of this model - it's really nice! :-) Here's hoping you have a better week this week! I'll have to try and paint some of my scenery now since I've run out of cardboard!

    1. Thank you John, I'll keep on fighting through as best I can, glad all the work paid off in getting it together. Lookforward to seeing your scenery painted, and shame you ran out of card, but it does give you a reason to get painting the other bits ! LOL

  5. First of all, I hope you feel better!
The ship looks fantastic! You did quite an outstanding job straightening back the pieces. Hadn't you told us, I would have never guessed, so that's quite an impressive job!
    Really great!

    1. Thank you Suber, I'll keep on fighting through. Rather than using the warm water method, I used a hairdryer and then stuck them in jigs to hold them straight while they cooled slowly. I find you get less cracking and weak spots this way, but would always suggest doing a test on a scrap piece first, as I found some manufacturers stuff actually melts, which I didn't think was possible with resin ! LOL

  6. I can see you're a fighter Dave - and with your willpower and positive attitude you will undoubtedly win out more days than not. As for the model, wow! I really like the exhaust weathering and the logo too.

    1. Thank you Mark, never really known when to quit ! LOL Feel the exhausts look a little too banded, rather than bleeding through on this one, which is strange as was done with the normal colours and method, even tried to tone it down with a black glaze over the top, but it will do for now. I do like my chapter symbol, and making it 3D helps make it stand out.

  7. Sorry to hear about your health issue mate, I know you have up's and downs so hopefully an "up" will be along soon.

Meantime, lovely work on the Storm Eagle (though I have to admit I thought it was the other one (Raven?) till the shot of the rear and could see how low and wide it was. You wouldn't expect poor quality from Forgeworld (well I wouldn't) not at their prices!! Does surprise you though when small outfits like yours, and others have better quality control and at vastly less customer outlay!

    Cheers Roger.

    1. Thank you Roger, I seem to be on a downward slide at the moment, just have to hope there's a light at the end of the tunnel, and it's not a runaway train ! LOL
Turned out well in the end, the problem with any large company is it depends on the worker making it, with smaller companies it's a matter of pride, and wanting to put out the best you can.

  8. I'm a bit behind the curve here, Dave, just catching up on my backlog, so wishing you a speedy return to health is probably a bit late, as hopefully you'll be fully recovered.
She looks good on the landing gear... a great job all round

    1. Thank you Justin, no worries at all, you replied and that's what counts, no matter when. My pain level is currently mid range so better than it was last week. One of the few models where I actually liked the landing gear, and does allow a fun scenario of " Get to the Chopper" or in this case flyer ! LOL

  9. Lovely job on this, Dave, it looks so good. The colours really work and I love the way you've embossed the chapter emblem. Hope you're feeling better, matey!

    1. Thank you Matt, very happy with my colour scheme, and took a couple of renditions until I got it right, and the embossing just adds that little extra touch. Thankfully the pain has returned to tolerable levels, so should have something new to show soon, maybe even tomorrow.
