MAN THAT'S A BIG DOOR

One of the main features of the Rancor pit, has to be the door that separates the two areas. It is so thick that I decided to make it differently to normal, and started with a piece of insulation foam cut to the right size. Then I added a skin of thin plasticard each side to give the smooth texture required. For the details I needed multiple levels in areas, so the bottom detail was made with 2 layers of 0.5 mm, where as the uprights were made with 1 mm card. To get the large rivet heads that were sunk in, I drilled holes then filled with greenstuff, and made an edge recess so as to define the two sections.

I included the recess in the wall that Luke tries to hide in.

Below are some more scenic pictures with models to show the scale of everything.

Below are the two different doors that give access to the corridor.

And just for fun one of the keepers finding the Rancor's latest deposit, in the movie Luke actually has to run right past a huge pile of dung to get to the corridor door.

That's all for this post, don't know what I'll do next, so will be a surprise for all, so until next time stay safe and have fun !

Cheers Dave

  1. Wow! Those scale pics really help show off the sheer size of the project, Dave. Awesome stuff!!!

    1. Thank you Simon, it's about half the size of the throne room piece, but was a lot quicker to do as most of it was rock texture, the 4 doors probably took the longest as they needed to be able to move up and down.

  2. Holy crap Dave! That's amazing! Bloody well done!

(I wonder if Gamorreans taste like their regular farmland porcine inspiration?)

    1. Thank you Dai, glad you like it being one of the one's who inspired this part.
That could be a distinct possibility ! LOL although the one's in Mandolorian might be a bit less fatty ! ROFL

  3. Looks great as always, Dave. I must admit I never noticed the dung pile in the movie; but then again I never noticed a lot of stuff you've pointed out in your projects. I love that you're such a completist that you included not only the dung, but the hidey-hole Luke crawled into. Brilliant!

    1. Thank you Keith, it's surprising how many details are in these shots that slip by, the only reason I've found them is by going through the scenes almost a frame at a time, allows you to see so much more, but takes a long time ! LOL

  4. It wasn't until the later shots with figures that I finally realised the scale of this endeavour. The door looks great and I'm pretty sure it's a good representation of the 'real' thing, given your research you do.
It looks great and it's a great addition to the throne room.

  5. Fantastic work on the pit, Dave, you've crammed so many little details into this and they all make it that much better. The door is excellent, even in its unpainted state it's a chunky bit of well-made scenery. I never realised that there was a pile of dung, but kudos for going for 100% accuracy LOL!

    1. Thank you Matt, I have left off a few of the bones that litter the two areas, as it started to look like a bonefield, and could get in the way of model movement. Was pleased with the door even if it was the piece that took the longest. Had watched the scene multiple times before and never noticed half the details that I found when I started pausing the whole scene.

  7. This is so good. I love the final shots. They really bring it all to life. If only you can sculpt Malakili, the Rancor's caretaker, who cries after it dies, then I think you will have this part of Jabba's Palace completely done :) I can't wait to see more of this as you're doing such an excellent job. It really is a dream to see you complete this!

    1. Thank you Jeff, he is on my list of characters I still need to sculpt to finish this realm, so we will definitely see him at some point. Need to take a short break from my Star Wars project, as I've been neglecting the business, and not creating anything new for too long, and we have a show in November, so would be good to have some new product for it.

  10. Seriously, all your work is inspiring, and this project is no exception. The attention to each tiny detail, the way it all turns to life... it's truly magic.

    1. Thank you Suber, I think the details really add the character of any scenery, and give it the sense of life, and actually a place that is lived in.

  11. That came out really good. The project is of course a win in terms of magnitude, but also when you dig down and look at the details. Being scratch-built is extra points too.

    1. Thank you Ann, was a fun one to do and actually didn't take too long overall (longest part being the big door ! LOL) glad to have another element ticked off the list.
