DROIDEKAS & DROIDS

Have finished all four of the Droidekas, the two in rolling configuration, and the two in open format.

Remembered to post the reference pictures by putting them in first to help Star Wars Phobes as John called them ! LOL

Really happy with how the metals turned out on these, and actually tried blending the metallics for the first time. I would like to have a go at making some shields for these at some point.

                                                                             R2-X2

                                                                               R2-Q2

I've also painted up a couple more R2 units for my Imperial Assault R2-X2 and R2-Q2 both of which appeared in New Hope.

I've also painted up a power droid that I found on Ebay produced by WOTC

ROLLCALL

In these strange times it's good to keep an eye out for your blogging friends, as you never know what may have happened. Now I've seen most people either on here, or on other blogs, or on other social media, or by direct contact, but there is two I've noticed not being around Wouter and Dai, has anyone heard from them ?

That's all for this post so until next time stay safe and have fun !

  1. Nice work on all of them Dave, but as you know I do have a soft spot for a "Power Droid". Can I ask a question, what are the cut-outs on the front of the Droidekas for?

Sorry can't help you with the missing bloggers, but strangely enough I ended up texting Simon the other day as I hadn't seen him about the net for a few weeks, (he's OK by the way' just been struck down with a lurgy). It's nice how we all look out for each other isn't it!

    Cheers Roger.

    Cheers Roger.

    1. Thank you Roger, a power droid is very iconic so definitely had to have some for my games, already working on a second one. The cut outs are for gaming so that when your using the measuring tools they fit in the cut out and point straight from the front or rear.
Had seen Simon on other blogs and Facebook so knew he was still about, forgot to include Harry in the list as I haven't seen him about for a while either.
With being stuck out of contact with so many people, looking out for each other on the internet is the least we can do

  2. Thanks for the clarification Dave, I spoke to Harry (E mail) last week so he's alright (well he was then), and Luke (IRO) is out and about but hasn't posted on his blog for a couple of weeks, neither has Jez, but he can go a few weeks between posts due to his job.

I'm a little concerned about Roy (this Blog of mine), as he went AWOL in June (I think) with mental health isues and has now pulled his Blog completely, I do hope he's alright.

    Cheers Roger.

    1. Good to hear about Harry, had seen IRO commenting on a blog last week, and agree it can be quite normal for Jez to go weeks sometimes even months between posts.
Roy hasn't closed his profile which is a good sign and have seen him click on the blog a few times, I know from last time that when he needs space you wont hear from him until he feels in the right place, I will reach out to him by email, and see if I can get a response

  3. They look fantastic Dave & would I be right in thinking the little power droid is from episode 4 A New Hope ?
The last part of the post is imho something that I feel is very true with us bloggers, in that even though a lot of us have never meet I feel we're like a little family & its always comforting to know that in bad times their are others keep an eye out for us & offering a friendly word even if it be from far away :)

    1. Thankyou Frank, the power droid appeared in all 3 of the first set of movies in multiple colour schemes and exterior shapes, I think this shape actually appeared in one of the cartoon series, Clone Wars, and later in Star Wars Rebels.
In these physically and mentally trying times, the thought that someone you may not have met in person but spoken to on a blog, taking the time to check your okay can really lift a persons spirits. Even if we only took the time to acknowledge a persons post with a comment can make them feel so much better. It's what community should stand for in my opinion looking out for each other and caring

  4. I like the little droids and that green box on a stick looks great too. Afraid I enjoyed the first 3 star wars films but not watched any of them after 4.

    1. Thank you John, the power droids were a funny creation that inhabited the first 3 films heavily either making the Gonk noise (gaining the nickname Gonk Droid) or getting tortured in Jabba's palace.
I wont hold that against you John, as everyone is different and we don't all have too like the same things

  5. Great stuff Dave! You really nailed the colours on the Droidekas 😀 Any early thoughts on how you could actually make the shields?

    1. Thank you Ivor, was a few minutes of holding up paints next to the reference picture to make sure I got the right tones.
The plan so far is to get a ball of the right size, then using greenstuff add in the energy patterns, then I'll make it into two half sections and take a mould and then cast in blue translucent resin. Clear resin would be better and use blue glaze to add the colour, but the price of clear resin is 3 times the price of normal resin, and it eats into the moulds at a lot faster rate

  6. I hav an aversion to any spider-like robot in films and your rake on the Star Wars ones left me with the same shivers, so a job well done ! Matching the colours to the reference pics is no mean feat either. Needless to say I only recognise the R2 units, though the last droid reminds me of Hughie, Dewey and Louey.

    1. Thank you Joe, I'm guessing you didn't do well with the one from Wild Wild West then ! Colour matching is something I've been working on a lot recently, as when you change the scale to the original you have to modify it, so can be tricky.
Silent Running was a classic and may well have been an influence to whoever made the power droid
