HEAVY METAL

No I'm not claiming to be painting to the standard of White Dwarf but a squad of Robot Bikers completed. Some of these are from my range of Robot Bikers I sell, and 3 are from Mongoose's Kickstarter, that I have modified to fit the jetbikes from my range.

This first one is from Mongoose, when painting Robots I like to think of it's role first before choosing a colour scheme, this one I decided was a house robot, so gave it a mixed colour scheme that the householder may have chosen.

This next one I couldn't think of a role, but it did remind me of Maximillian form the film " The Black Hole" hence I gave him the name Max on his chest plate.

This is the last one from Mongoose, and I thought it was a garbage droid, so went with green like Ro-Jaws and then dirtied up the paint scheme, with washes.

This is the first of my set, and when I built it, I had the idea of a construction droid, with the flat area at the top for carrying materials around the site.

The next one is a Rescue droid, so went with a medical colour scheme, red and white.

This is my recycle droid, being environmentally conscious I thought recycling would be the better way to go.

This last one is a waiter droid, so went with a very simple colour scheme, almost like a waiter in a shirt and waistcoat. It's taken a long time for me to actually paint this model, as the original one for my display cabinet was painted by Lee Hebb, a very accomplished competition painter, and after seeing his excellent painting of this model, really didn't want to attempt it myself.

Above we have a group shot of all 7 models together. All these were finished on Friday and photographed, which was just as well, as my wife had to rush me to A&E on Saturday with fears I was having a stroke. This was not the case luckily, but I am suffering with Bell's Palsy, which is non life threatening, just means that half my face has gone on strike and doesn't move at all. The one drawback is it has thrown off my depth perception, so painting details is very hard at the moment, not to let it stop me, I've been working on a lot of basecoating and washes, to keep me busy, and started work on a piece of scenery as well. Hopefully I will be able to finish something soon, so until then Stay Safe and have fun !

Cheers Dave

  1. What a great and diverse set of bots onbikes - something I really would have never thought had existed. It was interesting to find how decided on your colour schemes (something I have a great difficulty with for civilians), each matching your initial thoughts. Job well done.

    1. Thank you Joe, finding the right colour scheme can be tricky on any model, so I always try to think of it's purpose to give me a starting point, but doesn't always work ! LOL

  2. Awesome stuff, Dave. As you know I'm painting some robots myself currently, so this is an extremely well-timed post for the keeping my painting mojo going. I also think I have the Mongoose robots riding bikes somewhere - I'd forgotten that part of their Judge Dredd Kickstarter, LOL!!! Hope you get better soon - I appreciate Bell's Palsy can take quite a few months to recover from though.

    1. Thank you Simon, glad the post can help keep the motivation going. Did you get all the biker gangs ?
From what we've read it can take up to 9 months, I'll be happy when the depth perception returns, as I've got a ot of models to paint and sculpt, I want to get done ! LOL

    2. I went all in back in the day, and am pretty sure I got all the biker gangs. It was my full amount of vehicles which I never received as far as I can recall. But compared to some I was just glad I got what I got - and probably got more than my monies worth overall.

    3. Shame you didn't get all that you had pledged for, but glad to hear you got more than you spent out. I do have the zombie bikers they did, which I need to cast some quads for, but don't have the apes or humans, not too worried on them as I can always sculpt more to add to my range instead.

    4. I', just glad I jumped ship at the last minute on their Rogue Trooper KS, as I was all in on that one too - and I don't recall many of the sets even being sculpted let alone cast and sent out. I think Matt paid them off with Judge Dredd sets instead..!?!

    5. By the time of the Rogue Trooper Kickstarter, I was well out of the loop, so didn't have much to do with it, we had talked about some sculpting for it, but everything had changed by that time.

  4. Love the robo-riders! The mix of robot types and colour schemes is great!

Glad it wasn't a stroke Dave... :( Still, Bells Palsy doesn't sound like a bag of laughs either.

    1. Thank you Dai, having a mix of robots certainly allows different colour schemes, that keeps the motivation up.
Very thankful on it not being a stroke, the worst bit so far is dibbling when trying to dink my coffee ! LOL just look on the brightside.

Crikey, Dave, here's hoping you're on the road to recovery soon! :-) The droids on bikes are brilliant! I'm just wondering if I could use them in a pulp setting with 20mm figures - probably could if the droids and handlebars are separate!

    1. Thank you John, feeling better each day, that's always a good start. The droids and handlebars are indeed separate on the 4 I produce, and the robots are separated at the waist as well, to allow for some conversions.

  9. Great set of bikers (and robots!) Dave! They look like you could use them in a variety of games - including background extras in Star Wars! Good to hear it wasn't a stroke. Bells Palsy isn't fun but the good news is that it can go into full remission. Someone close to me had it happen to them after getting kicked in the head at work (being a teacher isn't all laughs, it turns out) but it did disappear after awhile. It very occasionally resurfaces briefly but has always gone away again - so best wishes for it to disappear for you as well.

    1. Thank you Azazel, and as you say could be used in many settings, these will be for Judge Dredd, once I've settled on the ruleset I want to use.
Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson a world strongest man competitor, and the man who played the Mountain in game of thrones, had it the other year, and was still competing, so can't complain, the doc's got me straight on a course of steroids, and the feeling has already returned to my face, just weird actually being told to touch my face to exercise it, after 18 months of keep your hands away from your face. Great to hear your colleague made a full recovery, and school work can be very dangerous, one of the teachers my mum was friends with almost got stabbed !

  10. First of all I hope you recover soon. All the best!
On ther minis side, I simply love all of them! They look cool and full of personality, great job!

    1. Thank you Suber, feeling better each day, as soon as my eye stops weeping, I hope the depth perception shall return.
Glad you like the robots, they were mostly fun to paint, once I worked out a role.

  11. First off, I hope you get back to health as soon as possible, matey. As for the bikes and robots, they look great — the bottom shot looks like a futuristic post-apocalyptic robot Magnificent Seven LOL!

  13. Wow, I'm sorry to hear about your health setback. I know very little about Bell's Palsy other than that Jim Ross, the famous wrestling commentator has it and seems to still be going strong after many years with it so I hope it ends up not impacting you too much, Dave. I also hope for a speedy recovery. The bikes look great and I'm curious as to what setting you designed them for. I agree with Azazel that they could be used in many places but I'm curious what the sculptor's intent was here :)

    1. Thank you Jeff, yes Jim Ross had multiple bouts, and still managed to carry on regardless, Feeling is returning slowly, and have already got some movement back in parts of my face, so hopefully will return to normal soon, but very aware it can take months and sometimes never fully, will just do what I can when I can.
The bikes and robots were actually designed for Mongoose's Kickstarter as part of their fulfilment of the pledges, it was later on that they went a different route, for reasons I cannot discuss being professional. So the short answer would be they were designed for Judge Dredd.
