A MONSTEROUS UNDERTAKING

As it's Monster May(hem) I've started work on the big project for this challenge, well you didn't think a few Bantha's was going to be my only entry did you ? LOL

The above reference picture is of a Krayt Dragon from an episode of " The Mandolorian", as my games are going to be set on Tatooine I thought I may need one of these creatures to add another element.

Because of the size of the creature I've gone with just the head surfacing, which will give a visual representation, but not take up the entire gaming area.

To start I layered together 2 cm thick insulation board to the size required, and then carved out the basic shape, and smoothed off with sand paper.

Next using Magic Sculpt, I started adding in all the details needed.

For the top of the carapace I used all purpose filler. The small nicks and indentations I'm going to keep as it adds extra detail and interest. You may notice some pecil marks on there, which I will use the Dremel to grind in.

The horn was detailed with green stuff, and once fully dry I will give it a light sand, which should a little more texture.

As you can imagine this is probably going to take most of my time up working on this, so be prepared that most of my posts are going to be progress reports on this project.

That's all for this post so until next time stay safe and have fun !

Cheers Dave

  1. That looks the business already to be honest, Dave. Awesome work. Are you planning on casting this model before painting it, or is it just going to be a personal project?

    1. Thank you Simon, many areas to finish at the moment, filling between different materials and extra details.
This is just a personal project, the cost to actually cast something this big would be prohibitive, plus would weigh a ton ! It's already quite heavy, with just a coating of durable material ! LOL

    2. Well it looks truly awesome, Dave. Really looking forward to seeing it finished and painted up.

  5. Now, when you were talking dragons in your last post, I'd tried to comment and suggest you do a Krayt Dragon, as I'd seen that episode of the Mandalorian. I'd forgotten that they are absolutely freakin' huge and this would be a monstrous undertaking (pun intended). A nice start on an impressive model, Dave.

    1. Thank you Jez, indeed it seemed a natural progression with my love of Dragons and Star Wars to combine the two ! LOL To be accurate on scale it should be bigger but would be too large for the gaming table

  6. Wow, Dave, that's looking excellent already! I can't wait to see it completed, but in the meantime feel free to post updates on it as I'd love to see how you'd build something like this.

    1. Thank you Roger, it is rather large ! LOL If it was a competition i probably wouldn't have entered, as these days I'd rather inspire and encourage than compete

  9. Very cool indeed. I'm looking forward to seeing it when it is done. I reminds me a little of something one would see in a fantasy novel. I forget where I saw the picture exactly, it might have been a Larry Niven novel years ago, where the ant-like heroes are walking through the skeleton of some leviathan that has been dead for a 1000 years but its bones are so huge and probably so magical that they linger even though Atlantis is drowned and the young kingdoms of men (maybe it was Moorcock?) try their fortunes with sword in hand....

    1. Thank you Ann, hopefully it won't be too long now, just waiting on more magic sculpt. I know what you mean there was something similar in "Pitch Black" where they walked to what they thought were trees, that turned out to be the bones of a long dead creature. in episode 4 of Star Wars you see C3PO walk past a set of bones, that was apparently a young Krayt Dragon

  11. That's a beast of a model, in every way ! I shudder to think how big this brute's body would be, so doing the head only was a great idea and probably the only way you ocld get it represented o the table.
    Great 'little' project !

    1. Thank you Joe, even in the programme, you never actually saw the whole beast, so would be completely pointless on a gaming board. The creature actually spends most of it's time under the sand, with the head briefly surfacing to grab food, so this should work perfectly, I hope ! LOL

    2. We're all good here, lots going on - son graduated from University and moved back home, wife and the horses back home after six months down south so it's been a bit chaotic 🤦‍♂️. Have a post in the queue which hopefully will get out soon.

  17. Now that is a great representation of the most fearsome resident of Tatooine! If I lived on that dusty planet, I'd be terrified to run into something like that! I have no sculpting abilities so I'm jealous that you can create something like this and add it to your games. That is such a cool thing to be able to do :)

    1. Thank you Jeff, Tatooine is indeed a harsh planet to survive on, with so many creatures looking to eat or kill you, probably why there is no wheeled or tracked vehicles ! LOL
The biggest thing with sculpting is practice and understanding how the medium your using moves, it's why I've used so many different ones on this piece. Also the willingness to experiment can turn up some great results !
