GROUND LEVEL

Rather than moving on to a new piece of scenery, I wanted to get a bit more done to the Imperial Chapel for my Night Hawks, and decided to get the groundworks in. If I had the complete Fortress, this piece would be high up the mountain, to raise themselves up to the God Emperor, Which is why I've based it on a rock plateau, as if they opened up the mountain and built the chapel there. The whole piece was built with builders foam, including the extra wall sections. On the inside I added some lights that came with the kit, and some metal bracing with plasticard, to keep the aesthetic going that was on the GW walls, I didn't include as many rivets, as they did as it was on rock face, and wouldn't need as many fixing points.

Eventually I'd like to make a roof for this as well, but that will have to be a project for another time, that's all for this post, so until next time stay safe and have fun !

Cheers Dave

  1. The floor alone would have elevated this kit so much. As usual, you go above and beyond, dude. Inspirational stuff.

    1. Thank you Keith, one thing GW kits seriously lack is intact floor tiles ! LOL The one I put together a couple of years ago, The back door for the chapter, had floor tiles from 3 kits stuck together just to get a couple of walkways, and one of those had to be filled to look intact. Just need to get some more materials then I can start the roof, who knows maybe in time for next years challenge ! LOL

  2. Are those scuff marks from when the gates open and shut??? Are you telling me that even in the 40th century folks still have trouble hanging a door straight??!! 😀
Lots of nice details like that. The inside floor looks especially cool. Nice job my buddy. 😀
By builders foam you mean the rigid blue or pink stuff? What I in the states would call insulation foam?

    1. Thank you Stewart, yes the 40K universe is very archaic even for their advancements, so scuff marks seemed like they would fit ! LOL The devil is in the detail as they say, so trying to make any additions look like they fit in place. Wanted to try the same techniques on white marble, and the floor seemed the perfect place to give it a go, did find that you have to thin the black contrast to get the right effect, but was expected as black pigments easier over white.
The foam I'm using is grey, but high density, similar to the pink and blue stuff.

  3. Oh, so sweet!! The tiles look gorgeous, but the markings on the outdoors earth is simply genius. Hats off!

    1. Thank you Suber, wanted to keep practicing my marble technique, and the floor tiles seemed the perfect opportunity, to try and get past that scenery is static, I like to add elements that suggest movement.

  4. Great bit of scratchbuilding and very difficult t see where the model stops and your additions start. Excellent marbelling on the floor, something i've found difficult to do.

    1. Thank you Joe, some of the struts I added don't line up perfectly, should have waited until the walls were stuck in place before adding them ! LOL Still trying to perfect the marbling effect so will keep working at it, until I get it right.

  6. In general, I'm not that crazy about the GW buildings...but that looks really good. Maybe it's the colors you used or the added terrain. But it all looks good to me! :D

    1. Thank you Faust, for me the kits are like a kit of two halves, half ruined building, half slightly run down. I would personally prefer them to release intact buildings and ruins separately, so you then had a choice ! LOL

  7. The attention to detail is excellent, Dave, especially the markings in the dirt caused by the doors opening! The interior floor is superb, and the whole thing really comes together; even the colour of the rocks is in the same colour range and works with the brass trim. Lovely stuff!

    1. Thank you Matt, I was watching Tron Legacy, and saw the scuffs from the video game door, and thought it would add some movement to the piece, the colours were all set on the Imperial terrain I did in season 1, so just trying to keep it consistent throughout, maybe the odd variation here and there to add a bit of variety ! LOL

  8. That checkerboard effect for the floor tiles is wondrous to see! Must have taken an age to get done?

Like has been said before me, the scuffs in the dirt due to the doors scraping the floor is an inspired detail that I would't have thought to include. Very nicely done Dave.

    1. Thank you Dai, the longest part was waiting for each colour to fully dry, so I didn't smear anything as I went ! LOL As I was painting I just got lost in the process, so had no idea on how long each element took ! LOL
I take a lot of inspiration from films and series, that inspire me, my biggest problem these days is remembering where the inspiration came from ! LOL

  9. Truly epic work mate! as has been said above I too am not the biggest fan of the GW gothic style buildings, but I'd give this "house room" in a heartbeat! As has been said too that floor is beautiful!!

    Cheers Roger.

    1. Thank you Roger, GW buildings can be very polarising in their basic state, so glad I could elevate it that so many of you like it. The floor was time consuming, and a learning curve on the white tiles, but worth the effort in the end.

  10. This building came out really well! The flooring really looks top-notch and fits in with the gothic style of the exterior. It seems like you're saving your best work for the end of this challenge!

    1. Thank you Jeff, I thought the classic chess board floor tiles were most in keeping with a Chapel, as it was what I saw in the cathedral in Malta, though I wasn't putting pictures or text in them like theirs, that was a step too far for me ! LOL

  11. Oooh, very nicely done, Dave! :-) Sadly, the bit that impressed me most were the marks on the ground where those heavy doors have scraped across it over time!
