THINK SHE MOVES LIKE GEIGER

My next entry for Fembruary, comes from Raging Heroes, and is one of their Lust Elves range. I got the model as part of their second Kickstarter, with the idea of using them with my Dark Eldar, the main troop models are a lot smaller than their GW counterparts, and this one turned out to be a lot larger ! Personally I don't think it is practical as a gaming piece, as I've knocked off so many of the small parts while painting, so will now sit on a shelf, until I decide what to do with her.

The model seems to have been influenced by H.R. Geiger's artwork, with the style of the headpiece and tentacles, I could have gone with his grey tone style, but wanted a bit more colour, nice to finally have it finished.

Monday I will post up the "Paint What You Got" challenge roundup, so until then stay safe and have fun !

Cheers Dave

  1. My goodness me, what a model! I can certainly see the Geiger's artwork influence there. I think I would be constantly worried about snapping bits off this one though, looks incredibly fragile.

    1. Thank you Michael, certainly is fragile, I knocked the torso off 3 times during painting ! LOL the materiel they use is quite flexible, but transporting it around would be a pain, so for now just a display piece.

  2. That is a truly disturbing model, Dave. I can't say I like it at all tbh. But I see why it would fit in with a Dark Eldar army. Is it actually on a base of some kind, as the tentacles (and some bodies) do indeed look likely to snap off given half the chance. Lovely paint-job, just a disconcerting model subject I suppose - I'm clearly getting old, LOL!!!

    1. Thank you Simon, if you find this disturbing, I advise not looking at a lot of Geiger's actual work, as it can get truly twisted ! LOL There is no base on it at all, some of the tentacles have a good supporting point others not so much, the worst one is the torso, as it has a join half way up, and a very small anchor point, I enjoyed painting it, as it gave a good challenge putting in all the different skin tones, on the twisted souls, could have just gone with one, but felt this way added interest.

  3. I have a little Geiger tattoo’d on my arm from my early 20’s. Wife hates it tho and it’s looking a bit tired so it’ll get a cover job once things are more manageable financially which I’m fine about - not really all that angsty and pink rock anymore, ya know?
Minis in his style of art are always a bit of a gamble as they often get taken “too far” design choices wise I feel. This elf is not there yet I think and your paint job is nicely appropriate. You could have gone way further with blood effects, etc which… yeah. Too much.

    1. Thank you Dai, never got a Geiger tattoo, but also have an old one I want to get covered, with a dragon coming to life off the arm, but need the time to get it done ! LOL I'm probably just an older version of my 20 year old self ! ROFL
I know what you mean, some go overly sexual, and some too mechanical, but it needs balance. Try to keep blood effects to a minimum, as you say can become over the top far too quickly.

I think I'm with Blaxkleric on this one I'm afraid! It is a disturbing model, but then again a lot of modern art is as well and you are right about Geiger's artwork (and let's be honest, the real world's not a nice place a lot of the time). I think greys wouldn't have done the model justice, so a good choice on the colours, Dave, even if they add to its gruesome realism! It is quite an impressive model though!

    1. Thank you John, with all the real world throws out, it is easy to become desensitised to the horror, and art does tend to imitate real life. Glad I went with the colours, but really want to try painting in grey scale, if nothing more than an exercise to test myself.

  5. It's a good looking model but there's a definite blend of GW, Geiger and even some Lovecraft in there! I like the pile of bodies but I wouldn't like to paint them LOL! Great job on the painting, she/it looks lovely and horrible :-)

    1. Thank you Matt, there is certainly a lot of different influences in the piece, painting the souls was a challenge, especially working out what belonged to which body, the strangest bit was a weird tongue set in the middle of it ! LOL

  6. Of course the model is purposely disturbing, I mean, it's precisely the whole point of the mini, and I think you nailed it!

    1. Thank you Suber, it certainly challenges the senses, for me I saw it as a painting challenge.

  7. Apologies, I was picking my jaw up off the floor! What a mad piece of machinery the mind is to come up with that, especially after initially reading that it's called a 'Lust Elf', definitely not what I was expecting lol! I really like your colour choice on the tentacles, certainly the makes the model pop.

    1. Thank you Ivor, it is certainly a talking point of a model in nothing else ! LOL Wasn't sure why they called the range Lust Elves, guess it just meant that no one could try to sue them ! LOL The tentacle shape and detail reminded me of Dr Octopus so went with a simple silver scheme, not to contradict the other colours I used.

  8. Some of the Raging Heroes Lust Elves look Dark Eldar inspired, but not this one, she is really something else. I've looked at Raging Heroes minis online quite a few times because they're inspired by GW but often cover subjects that GW doesn't any longer which is appealing to me. You did a great job painting her up! How did you find the quality of the sculpt overall? I've heard people say Raging Heroes don't live up to the pictures they show on their website which is why I've kept away from them. You can't put a nice paint job on something with a rough surface, after all!

    1. Thank you Jeff, Their models are very inspired by GW ideas indeed. The quality of the castings seem different to what you see on the website, as they show the 3D render rather than the actual model once it's gone through the printing and casting process. As for the quality some are better than others, this one actually had some large gaps in the skin skirt once put together, which required a lot of filling, some of the other models I've had less problems with.

  9. Very nice painting and it looks like a huge miniature. Though anything appropriate for dark Eldar are bound to be on the disturbing side: since their favorite activity is something that rhymes with grape. 😀

    1. Thank you Stewart, it is a very large model, as all the souls, at the bottom are 28 mm scale bodies. You're not wrong that anything fitting Dark Eldar, is more on the disturbing side, For the most part with my army I've tried to tone it down a lot ! LOL

  10. A lot going on with that model Dave & a real pity it's not suitable for gaming, but at least now it will look good on the shelf 👍🙂

    1. Thank you Frank, it is a shame, but it's just not practical on a table, not unless you want to spend half the game sticking it back together ! LOL

  11. Nicely painted mate, I've seen the "Raging Heroes" stuff on the TMP, but never seen a comment left on any of their posts, I have wondered if anybody ever bought any of their stuff! (I now see someone has 😉).

    Cheers Roger.

    1. Thank you Roger, both their Kickstarters did really well, so definitely not just me who has bought some ! LOL I must admit I have not seen many painted ones on the internet, and even their own site rarely has painted examples ! LOL

  12. It doesn't surprise me that it's a bit too delicate and too large for the tablettop but as a display peice it probably works well, but it would creep me out!
Well done gettig a bit colour on the piece, I don't remember Geiger's art having much in the way of colour!

    1. Thank you Joe, yes way too fragile for being a gaming piece, she's probably just as creepy as some of the Slaanesh demons I've already got ! LOL
Indeed Geiger's work was very grey scale, I think he did it with ink, but not sure.

  13. Wow, that's some model you've painted there, I'd hate to think how tricky some of those delicate tentacles were - great job Dave, awe inspiring😃

    1. Thank you Justin, some of the tentacles need to be supported while applying the paint, but once worked out nothing too tricky, wouldn't recommend drybrushing them though ! LOL
