SHADES OF GREY

As I slowly start unpacking boxes I noticed a lot of grey plastic staring back at me from abandoned projects, where my focus had been solely on my Star Wars project. So this year I've decided to get some paint on these old projects, the first to get a slap of paint were the Chaos cultists from GW's 40K box set from a few years back, the box set contained a set armed with autoguns, but had two of each model, so when I got them I did some head swaps to add variation.

I've kept  the palette muted even though they're for Slaanesh as I thought of them as a turned work force disgruntled with the Imperiums regime. The leader seemed to be wearing a looted Commisar jacket so painted it accordingly.

The box set also had close combat cultists as well, I gave the unit leader more colour to fit his rank.

Next to hit the paint desk was the Hellbrute, personally I prefer the old style dreadnought and especially the Forgeworld ones, made by Will Hayes and Simon Egan. So I've decided I'll use this as a Dreadnought that has been demonically possessed, the base will get done atthe same time as the rest of the force.
No idea what will be next, will have to see where the muse takes me, so until next time have fun !
Cheers Dave

  2. It's so easy to get distracted by the next new thin, but good to see the rejuvenation of old projects. Some of these cultists would look OK in a wide variety of settings too.

    1. Thank you Joe, and your absolutely right very easy to get distracted ! LOL I think part of the problem was I stopped playing 40K as wasn't happy with the current rule set and haven't even looked at the last two, but intending on using the large game rules I'm working on to be able to use the models, so won't just be eye candy on a shelf

  3. Nice bit of work Dave, I also have lots of stuff that needs painting with some of it been GW's but interesting to here you saying you've some other rules that you can put them to use in, as I think that is the only way I could paint my GW stuff.

  4. Thank you Frank, it’s all too easy to lose focus on a project if you’re not happy with the rules. I stopped enjoying 40 k when it became if you got first turn you normally won, and it got worse when if you didn’t have the latest release or the latest army list your army would be ineffective, the rules I’m working on are a bit more real time and a lot more tactical. If you’re interested in them I can put you on the list for play testing when they’re ready

    1. I know where your coming from on GW's pay to win front Dave, when they rebooted 8th it was grand until the codices started to be released, thanks for the offer to be a game tester but as I only play solo these days I don't thing I'd be much use to you in that department.

    2. Always happy to have a solo gamers input as solo gaming is on the rise and wouldn’t want to exclude anyone

  5. These are great and are perfect representations of Chaos Cultists. I wished they had done these back in the day when I used to collect 40k.

    1. Thank you Simon, I like the models but agree GW took far too long to release these models although there were some useful models in the Necromunda range that worked well as cultists

  7. I've never been interested in the GW world so no idea what these are but I could see them in a star wars enviroment.
Nicely painted though and its always good to reduce the pile into something you can put on the table.

    1. Thank you John, indeed GW is not everyone's cup of tea and neither should it be, as you say they could have multiple uses in other gaming, maybe even Judge Dredd as a cult.
Always nice to have a win of another unit down, and more colourful gaming figures available

  8. Wasn't a fan when they made Chaos Dreads "Hellbrutes" either. Bad idea on GW's part I think.

Like the schemes. Pink dread is a bit loopy-scary actually.

    1. Thank you Dai, agree it wouldn't have been the direction I would have gone, unless it was a separate demon engine, and still kept Dreads in.
The joys of painting Emperors Children lot's of pink and black ! LOL Prefer the noise marine side which I have predominately black with pink markings

  10. Very nice work! I especially like what you did on the hellbrute.
Not a big fan of many current the more recent GW models, too grimm. I guess I've been in the hobby for too long already and like the style of the models I grew up with too much. Though I must admit the 30k style entices me.

    1. Thank you Wouter, a lot of GW's new stuff I find needs a lot of work, must be something to do with the 3D sculpting, but that's just my opinion ! LOL
