As you may have seen over the years with my Star Wars project, most of it is cannon, occasionally expanded universe, and occasionally bits I find that fit the aesthetics, like one of the land speeders I did over the summer, and small craft I did a few Christmas's ago. Today's piece comes from a Google search I did when looking for all the different speeders on Tatooine, there are a few I still need to find or make, this one actually comes from
Tatooine Dune Speeder was a painting that appeared in the 2003 MMORPG Star Wars Galaxies developed by Sony Online Entertainment and published by LucasArts. The image used for the painting came from the art book From Pencil to Pixel: The Art of Star Wars Galaxies. The painting was one of nine paintings given out randomly to players of the game for the game's first anniversary of release in the United States and Europe. The painting was later added to the "rare loot system" in Hotfix 17.10 on October 7, 2010. The system allowed players to loot rare items from any enemy in the game. The vehicle depicted in the painting bears similarities to the T-47 airspeeder. The player could use the painting in their house as decoration.
I started with a 1:52 T-47 airspeeder made by Revell, as the basis, then used plasticard, parts from other models, and some greenstuff to come up with this.
Now it's not 100% accurate to the sketch, but close enough for me. Painting wise I went for some desert colors, with a red stripe, then well weathered, there is an alien pilot which I made but you can only see glimpses of him.
While I did the Dune speeder I also painted up the new Legion T-47 I got for my birthday, I've gone with a color scheme matching the reference from the Empire Strikes Back, I'm going to add it to my slowly growing Hoth bits, as I already have a Revell 1:52 T-47 with a Tatooine colored base, now the Revell kit is actually not much smaller than the Legion one, a few millimetres narrower on the width, and about a centimeter shorter on length, so close enough. I've also managed to paint up Poggle the lesser, and Sun Fac the two Geonosian characters I also got for my Birthday.
From Star Wars to Trekking now, I've had a play with some of the vinyl kits that Squirrel sent over, seeing how well I can do on larger scale models, if you've ever painted large scale models you'll know it is very different to our normal wargaming painting. I'm pretty pleased with the test results, as my daughter accuses Odo of watching her round the room ! LOL
I think that's enough for today, as I need to get back on with some Ork's and a box of zombies are groaning my name ! LOL So until next time, stay safe, and have fun !
Cheers Dave

Wow..!! What a posting, Dave, and a rare mixture of Star Wars and Star Trek. LOL!! That Dune speeder looks like an official kit to me, so very well done on the kitbash/greenstuff work. The Snowspeeder is superb too - marvellous paintjob - and I look forward to seeing this Battle of Hoth project expand to include multiple Imperial Walkers too ;-)
ReplyDeleteThank you Simon, been on a bit of a roll recently and trying to clear projects before too many build up ! LOL Star Wars has only one project left on the desk at the moment, so very manageable at the moment, which is good as Christmas is not far away ! LOL The Hoth project will be a slow burn for the time being, just the occasional piece here and there, and luckily I already have an AT-AT which doesn't have a base so can work on any setting ! LOL will need to do an AT-ST though !
DeleteHoly heck Dave - this is a smashing post, so much to drool over!
ReplyDeleteThat custom Speeder is fab. Very nicely done with only limited little reference images to draw from. I played the pants off Galaxies back in the day, probably one of my fav MMORPG's ever.... Until the starships expansion came out. -__- So much potential, so poorly done.
Legion Speeder looks the part and is on a really tall stand. I like that!
Geonoshans are weird and almost 30 years on, I'm still not sure I really like their design or reason for existing in the SW methos (Designers of the Death Star??? Kinda weak imo.) Regardless, your painting on these two looks great per the reference image. I think whole squads in these schemes will be quite convincing on the tabletop.
Lastly, large Trek heads are perfect mate! Quark and Odo for sure, completely unmistakable as to who they are supposed to be. (And two of my fav characters from DS9 to boot!)
Thank you Dai, I had friends that played Galaxies, never got round to it myself, too busy painting models ! LOL Wish I did more computer gaming, but it played hell with my thumbs. It was a cool looking design, and being called a Tatooine Dune Speeder it would fit perfectly into my gaming.
DeleteThe stand is very tall, but fits with looping around an AT-AT's legs ! LOL
As a species I found them interesting, but a lot of that came from Clone Wars and Rebels, as for the Death Star design, they were only partly responsible in the end, as Galen Erso was credited for the completition of the weapon in the end. squads should look cool and the color scheme is easily repeatable.
Quark and Odo were two of my favourites also, but I also liked Morn, working in bigger scales has been fun and interesting, and also a challenge, so totally entertaining.
This is superb Dave. What a great idea to take the original kit and build out, it really looks the part. Cracking work on the original speeder too.
ReplyDeleteThank you Michael, It was easier to do the conversion with the Revell one, as a lot more of the parts are separate and easier to move than the Legion one, but both are good kits in their own right in my opinion, if a little small on both versions.
DeleteOh wooow!
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing work Dave!
Thank you Michal, quite a variety today, so lot's of different challenges ! LOL
DeleteSplendid looking speeder!
ReplyDeleteBest Iain
Thank you Iain, a fun one to add to the ever growing collection of speeders.
DeleteNow things feel normal again! I was a big Star Wars Galaxies player myself and I don't remember this speeder but it looks like the designs in Galaxies at the same time to me. You could get your own landspeeder and drive around Tatooine and other planets in the game so this is a really cool modelling subject! I really like how you painted it up as well. The weathering and color choices are both spot-on!
ReplyDeleteSeeing Star Trek and large-scale models is a double shock! They look very nice and capture the on-screen personalities really well. How big are the models you're working on? Its definitely a useful skill to try painting something larger as it can inform how you paint smaller subjects as well.
Thank you Jeff, I believe it was one of two gifts that people got, so could be you had the other one, and it was a only a picture you could hang on a wall, so making it a 3D piece was a total whim for me ! LOL The color scheme was partly from a Lego Star Wars movie that I saw a still of, and the red stripe was based off of the A-Team van ! LOL
DeleteThey are a big change of pace, they are 1:6 scale roughly 12 inch tall models. The sculpts on these are a excellent representation of the characters, so were a joy to paint, the biggest thing with the bigger scale, was to make smaller transitions between colors and more glazes ! LOL
Please don't stop searching, otherwise we'll be deprived of these wonderful craft.
ReplyDeleteThe Star Trek heads are very well painted, but look rather like trophies.
Keep on sharing these treats.
Thank you misterc, as you asked so nicely, I'll keep searching, currently got five speeders to look for, some are just different color schemes, on ones I've already done, but a couple are first ones ! LOL
DeleteWanted to see how well I could do the heads, while I got some base colors and experiments on the bodies, so that will get shown at a later point.
