When I do painted models for customers, I don't show them very often, as how many times can you show the same piece before it get's boring ! LOL Today's piece is a custom piece, so wanted to show it. The customer is playing Frostgrave, so wanted some deep snow drifts on a set of ruined walls, he sent me some reference pictures to have an idea what he was looking for. The walls and snow drifts were made from foam core, and I also used some greenstuff to be able to put footprints in.
I really enjoyed building and painting this, as it was an interesting challenge. That's all for this post so until next time stay safe and have fun !

That looks just the job, Dave, and I'd imagine the buyer will be well-pleased with it. Was it just the one piece you did or have you in background been rebuilding a large part of Frostgrave..? LOL!!!

This is the second piece that I've done for this client, the first was one of the standard Mausoleum I sell, obviously covered in snow, and I'm now starting a ruined two storey building for him, but he does have a fair list he would like, so could well be a whole boards worth by the time I finish ! LOL

ReplyDeleteThank you Suber, whenever I see an old stone building I always try to take a mental note on the construction whether it's intact or ruins, ready for when making a model of such. The thing I noticed is the corner stone's and round the windows and doors are the largest stones used and tend to be the most uniform, the rest tend to be whatever they can find to fit, and also don't always cover the entire thickness of the wall.

ReplyDeleteThank you Matt, I would have done some lichen or moss on the walls, but with how long the area has been frozen, I thought it would look odd, so left it off, the next piece has some other textures in it also, so should be interesting.

This looks great to me and perfect for Frostgrave as well. I wouldn't mind seeing more of your commission work if you do decide to share it. I'm not interested in doing commissions myself but I still like seeing what others do for commissions if that makes any sense! With that said, I could see where that might take more time than you have to give to blogging and that is a perfectly valid reason for not sharing much of it too.
ReplyDeleteThank you Jeff, I don't mind sharing the commission work at all, just when it's our standard pieces it would get boring for you guys after seeing 20 Pallisade forts ! LOL I normally share anything different or interesting, as long as the client hasn't asked for secrecy, which does happen from time to time.

DeleteA simpe and efffective piece of scenery and the snow drift effect works well. On a personal front though, I don;t like the gerey walls, but I'm pretty sure the buyer will.

DeleteNice work on that, and I do love Frostgrave! Add me to the list of people who would like to see more! I've made a few walls with individual foam bricks, but haven't made anything that reaches two levels yet. So I'm really curious how you do that, and make it stable.
ReplyDeleteThank you Brian, I will post it up when finished, and any questions you have on the construction I'll be happy to answer, the customer wants the second floor fixed in place, but if I was doing it for me I'd make it removable so for easier figure placement.
