So November is Movember month, now if you don't know what that is, it's the month where you paint models with facial hair, now I have been known to push the boundaries on this last year, and this year is no different, so first I have an Ewok Rebel, personally I think he has a very hairy face, for anyone who doesn't know what an Ewok is they are a sentient race of small bears that live of the Forest moon of Endor, they were first seen in the movie Return of the Jedi, where they helped the rebels blow up the shield generator of the Empire. They then had two TV movies in the US called Caravan of Courage, and the Battle for Endor, in the UK these were cinema releases.
Next I have a trio of Ugnaughts that were first seen on Bespin, in the movie Empire Strikes Back, but have since appeared in cartoon series and TV series, and even character ones like Melch in Star Wars Rebels, and Kuill in the Mandolorian
Now I've also finished the two characters that came in the same box as the Ugnaughts, first is Davith Elso, which is a character created by Fantasy Flight Games for Imperial Assault Bespin Gambit.
Last today is Murne Rin a Ithorian character by FFG for the same expansion.
That's all for todays post, I am hoping to paint the six Bespin Guards that all have facial hair before the end of the month as well, so until next time stay safe and have fun !
Cheers Dave
Always loved the Ewoks. Going against the grain, I know as most SW fans think they were far too cutesy and silly for the franchise, but I think that they looked exactly that way, yet were supposed to eat other species really appealed to me! That rebel ewok sculpt is so good! Is it from Legion/Imperial Assault?
ReplyDeleteUgnaughts were likewise cool and I'm super happy that more recent SW offerings have them front and center.
Great post Dave and a great start to November!
Thank you Dai, indeed, and the fact they stood up to the Empire with slings and bows, meant they were true warriors. The sculpt is legion scale, but is 3D print, which my children got me for my Birthday.
DeleteUgnaughts have certainly had a more important role in recent years, which is great in my opinion, that other races are being given more important roles rather than just background characters, and it becomes less of a humans only club ! LOL
Always enjoy your Star Wars posts, Dave, and this one is a real cracker. The Star Wars Legion prints available out there are utterly insane, and I've been doing very well to resist - but that Rebel Ewok might be too tempting.
ReplyDeleteThank you Simon, once I've finished my Dark Eldar I'm sure most of my posts will be Star Wars related ! LOL There are some awesome prints available now, I saw a great set of alien Rebels from Rogue One today, as for the Ewok rebel, there are 5 different models, which all depict the Ewoks after with upgraded kit.
DeleteAwesome. Looking forward to seeing Ewoks come to Legion. I feel like I need to get Chewbacca and some Wookies finished!
ReplyDeleteThank you Simon, Indeed I feel we need some of the other armies to come through, especially in the Clone Wars era, to add diversity on what you can play. If I hadn't already painted mine they would be great for this challenge ! LOL
DeleteAll very nice, Dave! :-) I particularly like Murne Rin! Almost by coincidence, as we move into Movember, I have some figures that will fit into that challenge!
ReplyDeleteThank you John, Murne needed a lot of detail put in on his clothing, but I feel it was worth it for the end result. Be sure to let Roger know, so he can include it in the round up.
DeleteGreat Mo'vember entries Dave, anything with facial hair counts (I entered a Bearded Collie one year), so Ewoks are a safe bet!
ReplyDeleteAll the Star Wars fig's you've done are top notch, though I have a soft spot for the "Hammerhead" (thats what we called them in my day 😉).
One thing though what's going on with the Ewok actor to the right of the bottom row? why is his head so small? was it a medical condition or has the picture been edited? Just wondered.
Cheers Roger.
Thank you Roger, as soon as I got the Ewok and Ugnaughts, I thought they would be perfect entries for Movember.
DeleteI am old enbough and did have the action figure of Hammerhead, but went with the name they're known by now, so anyone younger would know what I was talking about ! LOL It was cool to see Hammerhead in the Bad Batch series though.
That Ewok doesn't have dwarfism, but a different condition that makes him shorter, which is why his head looks a lot smaller than the others.
Its fantastic to see some more Star Wars minis from you, Dave! I have a real soft spot for Ewoks and I think Return of the Jedi is my favorite of the original three movies too. Seeing a rebel version of an Ewok is just awesome! I can't believe the Ewok specials got a cinematic release in your country either. I love them in spite of their terribleness because I like Ewoks and Endor so much but its hard to imagine paying theater prices to see those. They really have a TV special feel to them. And that's not to take anything away from the Ugnaughts who are entertaining in their own right! :) I hope we'll see more Star Wars minis in the future as you're reminding me how great the franchise can be.
ReplyDeleteThank you Jeff, once I've got through the last of the Dark Eldar, expect a lot more Star Wars output from me ! LOL Jedi was always my favourite of the originals as well ( mostly due to Jabba's Palace, and the biggest spaceship battle so far ! LOL) I never saw the Ewok movies in the cinema, but waited until they came out on video ( what we used to watch before DVD's for anyone not old enough to remember) so it didn't cost as much to watch them ! LOL I actually have a copy on DVD still of both movies, which I still watch from time to time, if nothing more for reference. Ugnaughts were a cool addition, and even more so since the series, I'd love to see more alien races get bigger parts in series, so it's not just about humans, after all it's a huge galaxy, why are the other races not as prevalent. Lot's more to come from me Jeff, including plenty of obscure ones.
DeleteOh, I do love them all. The Ewoks also got a cinema release here! I watched them as a kid! :D
ReplyDeleteThank you Suber, glad you enjoyed them, it's amazing how the different countries saw these movies, i remember seeing the original Battlestar Galactica in the cinema, but read it was released on TV in the US !
DeleteNice work, Dave! They are all looking good, but Murne Rin is my fave. I always thought the original Hammerhead character was interesting as a kid, and the noises that species made were so alien compared to anything else in SciFi at that time.
ReplyDeleteThank you Brian, indeed, and they have certainly developed on that over the years, adding more detail to the species, I really like it when they add in interesting alien species, that have depth, not just a token gesture in the background, I think we need more of it in all Sci-Fi.
DeleteHi Dave, just catching up a little, you're incredibly prolific and to such a high standard of painting as well. Absolutely amazing.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the Zombie's backstories, you should do more of that it was very amusing. The scenery challenge had me looking at a few of the blogs showcased although mainly outside my area of interest there was some high quality workmanship displayed by all.
Cheers
Thank you John, great to hear from you, I like to keep myself busy, and this year I set myself a personal target of finishing armies on top of all the other challenges ! LOL
DeleteGlad you like the stories, I don't do it very often, as I don't think my writing is very good, but maybe I'll do some more as many said they enjoyed it.
The scenery challenge brings in such a diversity of subjects, and this year was no different, with such a high standard as well, I always manage to find more ideas from what everyone else shows ! LOL
Ewoks just make me smile and laugh (for all the good reasons, but I haven;t seen any of the other SW's critters, but their aliens always look very alien and original. Your representations of the various races all look excellent and very close to the ir screen selves.
ReplyDeleteThank you Joe, always good to be able to make others smile, especially for good reasons. I do like the diversity of the Star Wars realm, and all the aliens there are, my only complaint would be it's not proportionate to the number of humans, but is better than a lot of other Sci-Fi.
DeleteGreat work on the Empire-destroying teddy bear, Dave! I thought the Ewoks were cute and cool when I first saw RotJ aged 11, but now I'm older I pretty much have an "oh Christ it's the cuddly toys" feeling when I watch the movie. Still, they brought down a couple of AT-STs in spectacular fashion so I'll give them credit for that :-)
ReplyDeleteThank you Matt, as a species I found the duality of looking cute, yet being carnivores a strange one, but appreciate a diversity in the universe ! LOL
