KABAL

In this post I'm going to show how far I've got on my Kabal element of my Dark Eldar army, now some are what I already had, with maybe the odd update, and the rest is what I've got finished recently to try and complete this army. So where to start, well let's start at the beginning, these first two units were done for my tournament army, and their Raider transports, both transports have had an update with the Kabal symbol added to the prow, the Kabal of the Bloodied Claw. The second squad had heads from the Maiden Guard to help differentiate the two squads.

Here is the Ravager that was part of the Tournament list, which I also added the symbol to thgis week.

Next up is the Incubi, these were also done for the tournament, the Raider has also had the symbol added to it, the trophies on the back of the raider is a record of the opponents that this army has beaten, it looked a bit weird when I started this army, being a lot of empty sticks, but is a bit more interesting now.

Last bit from the tournament, is the Archon, I'd still like to find a way of sculpting a shadow field, which can be removed once it's gone down during a game.

Now we move onto what I've managed to finish this week, this first warriors squad was made using Dark Elf Warriors from the fantasy range to add more variation to my squads, and I also did the same for the crew of the raider, which I also finished this week.

Last today, is the current Dark Eldar warriors box, out of all the latest kits, this is my favourite, and enjoyed painting them, even though they have loads of extra details. I can't say the same about the new style Raider, as they have even less area than the original for troops to be on, instead now, they are supposed to hook themselves to the outside edges and hang on.

So I still have a few bits left to finish for this army, including 3 vehicles, and a unit of Trueborn, which are elite Kabalites, plus there is some squads for the Wych army to finish as well, but these will now have to wait as tomorrow see's the start of the latest challenge. Now I can't find ayone running Zomtober at the moment, so I will take that on board as well as Apocalypse Me, so you still have time to sign up. That's all for this post, so until next time stay safe and have fun !

Cheers Dave

  1. Is a Shadow Field like a force field? 'cos I can remember years ago, when the Tau first came out, a chap at the Richmond club I attended modelled force fields onto the Battle Suits using the round, clear flying bases. He had them designed so they fit onto the wrist, like a shield, if memory serves me right, and could be removed/attached as needed (I can't remember tbh, about the year 2000 was it? don't even think I had the Internet back then, either.

I think I've mentioned this in the past but, it's a cracking good colour scheme you've painted the army in!

    1. Thank you Roy, the first colours I used were blue, and looked too much like Crimson Fists, so was glad I moved to the green.
A shadow field is similar to a force field, the codex describes it as surrounding it's wearer in a dark miasma of energy that is almost impossible to penetrate. One of the ideas I had was something like Spawns cloak from the movie, but I may go for a swirling cage look, but that could change when I start sculpting it ! LOL

    2. Ah. In that case I'd go for the cheapo option and use a couple of black pipe cleaners, twisted together to form a beehive look, to sit over the miniature as needed - but that's just me, being lazy. Another option I've seen on a blog, to show a figure is being swarmed by insects, was the blogger got a glass display dome, painted it so it looked cloudy and then detailed small insects painted amongst the murky, obscured surface display. That looked effective for what it represented, but probably not for a shadow field.

    3. Some creative and interesting ideas Roy, and thanks for sharing as it's certainly given me some food for thought, if I come up with a final solution I will remember to show it on the blog.

  2. What an awesome array of classic Dark Eldar you have Dave, and all so very nicely painted too. They must look the true biz on the battlefield, imho. I'm very interested to see what you do with the shadow field. I'd have been tempted to just paint a duplicate figure in a mixture of dark colours - maybe swirling black or with metallic flakes in it (like Matt recently did for his robot swarms). But I suppose its in many ways a waste of what could be an expensive mini.

    1. Thank you Simon, the original army had bits from all three lists in it, but now I like to field them individually, or as a giant whole coming in, in waves. I've got an idea to do such a game, with the Night Hawks defending an outpost, with waves of the three armies hitting them, but will see how that plays out ! LOL Good idea, but trying to find the relevant parts would be quite costly now as you say, so will probably go down the greenstuff route.

  3. What a fantastic army, Dave, the green-black and bone colours make them menacing indeed! I too really like the latest plastic Drukhari warriors and I might pick them up once I've cleared my Etsy miniatures backlog, which is growing by the week LOL! I'm up for Zomtober and Apocalypse Me this year :-)

    1. Thank you Matt, I'm very happy with the colours, which is probably just as well with all I've still got left to paint ! LOL You have an Etsy Backlog I'm surprised ! LOL That pesky Gremlin been ordering more stuff when your backs turned again ! ROFL
That's great your onboard for both mate, for once I am too ! LOL

  4. Cool, awesome work! I love the colour choices and the whole lookings of these guys. I also believe the current warriors are fantastic, a truly lovely evolution of the original models. Great job all over!

    1. Thank you Suber, it's been a long time coming, but can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel ! LOL I wasn't impressed with the new Wyches, too much armour, but these really benefitted from the update.

  5. Nice looking army! I really like those ships too. I actually like the newest one the best, the black paint looks pretty sweet on it. But hooking the minis on the sides?! What kind of lameness is that!?

    1. Thank you Brian, it actually comes with some crew to hang off the sides to highlight the fact of how they get transported, but even with only 3 models, it starts to look crowded, and it's supposed to be able to carry 10 ! LOL, the other thing I like more about the old one you can do some cool conversions to it, where as it's very limited on the new one (Even Forgeworld, hasn't made any kits using it as a basis ! LOL)

  6. That's quite a force you have there, not really apparent when we see only a few at a time. You say that's there's yet more to come too !
The best thing about this army is that you've held to a simple colour scheme throughout, but with enough variations for individual unis to be idntifid. Great force Dave.

    1. Thank you Joe, I do like variation, whether it's using different parts, a bit of conversion, or just a different colour added in small amount, as you say it helps identify the unit easily on the tabletop. My photography skills aren't great, so try to keep the pictures to what I know I can manage, at some point I will attempt a huge group shot, but I don't hold out much hope on it looking good ! LOL

  7. Nice job all around. Great looking army.
Though that one miniature looks like she’s giving a giant ‘thumbs up’ to her troops. 😀

  8. As others have said, the army looks fantastic and is something to be proud of. While I wouldn't think you'd be interested in it considering how much you've got done, I wish that GW would update the Dark Eldar range with some more new sculpts. I think they deserve some new minis even if many of the ones out there have aged pretty well.

    1. Thank you Jeff, once I've got these last bits finished it will be a truly large Armageddon army altogether ! LOL There is certainly some gaps on what is currently available, as GW have none of the beasts for the beastmasters and none of the court of the Archon, but then they may no longer be in the list, as I haven't looked at the newer codex, GW seem more interested in the joint list they released combing the Eldar and Dark Eldar, which holds no interest for me.

  9. A great looking, really impressive force, Dave! I really like how effective all of the alternate heads have worked on these models, and despite how badly the original DE plastics have aged (and were a bit mediocre for the time as well, really) you've made them look really good here!

    1. Thank you Azazel, if I stop adding to it, I may actually get it totally finished ! LOL In comparisson to the Space Marine plastics at the time, they definitely felt like an after thought, and the colours GW were painting them didn't help make them look any better ! LOL

A nice force and the new additions fit in really well! :-) I think I like the older style Raider more than the new one!

    1. Thank you John, even if you change the size of each green shade, they still tie together but allows for some variation. I prefer the old one to, and wait till you see a couple of the converted ones I've yet to finish
