LITTLE PIG, LITTLE PIG ?

For anyone who has watched Star Wars Rebels the mention of Puffer Pig, could make you smile thinking of pigs bouncing on the opposition, for anyone who hasn't here is what Wookiepedia says :

Puffer pigs were a non-sentientherbivorousmammalian[1] pig species[2] native to the planet Kyryll's World.[4] They lived in mines and amongst rocks[1] and were capable of sniffing out valuable minerals with the efficiency of a dozen mining scanners, making them very valuable to smugglers and miners.[2] The Mining Guild was known to pay very well for the animals.[5] When frightened, puffer pigs would inflate their bodies to massive proportions, and were capable of multiple size increases if further threats occurred.[2]

The galactic entrepreneur Lando Calrissian once traded with the criminal Azmorigan for a puffer pig, offering him the Twi'lek pilot Hera Syndulla in return. Calrissian planned on using the pig to find minerals on the planet Lothal; however, Azmorigan confronted Calrissian and demanded the pig back after Syndulla escaped from him. Syndulla and her crew, along with Calrissian, then defeated Azmorigan and his men, using the pig itself in the combat to knock down several of the criminal's men.[2]

Years later, the Spectres traded several pigs to the crime lord Cikatro Vizago as payment for smuggling them onto Lothal, which had come under a severe Imperial lockdown.[5] The Empire restricted the use of puffer pigs on industrial worlds like Lothal.[1] After landing at the town of Jhothal, the Spectres used the pigs to escape from an Imperial boarding party by taking advantage of Lasat warrior Garazeb Orrelios' tendency to scare the animals, causing the Imperials to be surprised by a barrage of inflated pigs. Vizago, who had been arrested, attempted to escape as well, but couldn't resist trying to take along one uninflated pig, scaring it and becoming trapped when it inflated.[5]

Puffer pigs were raised as livestock for consumption by residents of the planet Batuu.[6]

I've not found anyone selling these creatures, so I've built my own, first is the pig in it's docile form, this was all made from greenstuff, with no frame on this one.

Next I built a scarred version, using a couple of cups from an egg holder, and some green stuff, I think Zeb must have put his useful face on.

Already looking forward to the scared pig bouncing over some stormtroopers ! LOL That's all for this post, so until next time stay safe and have fun !

Cheers Dave

  1. An extremely odd, yet marvellously visualised member of George Lucas' galaxy far far away, Dave. That's one round pig.!!!

    1. Thank you Simon, they are strange looking creatures in both forms, the blown up one, I changed slightly from the cartoon and added a little extra shape in the middle so it wasn't a perfect sphere.

    1. Thank you John, got a few more characters from the series I'd like to get done, so you may want to have the series on loop ! LOL

  3. Fantastic sculpting job on this one, Dave! I don't know this creature since I haven't watched Rebels but I'm reminded of the claymation movies that were popular back in the day. The pig looks really lifelike and I love the blown up one in particular! You're getting me excited to see what I can learn about sculpting now which I'm sure was your plan all along ;)

    1. Thank you Jeff, I did make a slight change to the blown up version, to give a sense of realism, but otherwise stayed true to the reference material. Artists tend to draw inspiration from all over, so wouldn't surprise me if the claymation didn't have an influence. Desire to learn is one of the biggest steps mate, and not being afraid to fail, and try again is another one.

  4. WTF is that? I have not watched Rebels but I’m sure that is the moment when the show jumped the shark. 😀😀

The sculpt and the paint job look great though.

    1. Thank you Stewart, the pigs are actually used a bit like real pigs who hunt for Truffles, these hunt for minerals, and the self defence mechanism is very similar to a pufferfish, just added bouncing ! LOL

  5. Haha, never heard of these (but didn't watch "Rebels" to be honest), wonderful sculpts even so, they do remind me of a "Pokémon" but can't remember the name of it though 😁.

    Cheers Roger.

    1. Thank you Roger, well worth the watch if you have time, and would give a great background before watching Ahsoka when that comes out. Not very up on Pokemon, but it wouldn't surprise me if they had one similar.

What a fantastical beast and a very surprising addition to your collection (but very welldone too).

    1. Thank you Joe, a concoction of Morphine, caffeine, and nicotine, not really a healthy mix ! LOL
Couldn't resist doing this one, as it was just such a comical element, and would love to see it bouncing across a unit of Stormtroopers ! LOL

  8. Really like these two, a great representation of the on screen critter. Silly things, but they provided some fun moments in the cartoon.

    1. Thank you Dai, they certainly did that, and adds to the list of random encounter creatures I have as well.

  9. Funny how Star Wars has been able to employ humor and drama. I guess that was the same model they used for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so it's kind of a perfect match that they both landed under Disney. I haven't seen Rebels, but that's a nice looking sculpt and paints! :)

    1. Thank you Faust, a bit of humour mixed in with drama emulates life, so I enjoy it and makes for entertaining movies and series in my opinion. easy enough to make and paint quickly, and happened to be what I was watching at the time ! LOL
