DON'T TRUST THEM

The last bit of Kroot I have to show, were never listed by GW, as they were the idea of Mark Bedford, who at the time of his idea was the head sculptor at Specialist Games, before it was then axed by GW, and later brought back as part of Forgeworld.

The idea was that you occasionally get Dark Shaper's who are not trusted by the regular Kroot, as they are willing to experiment with tainted meat, possibly Tyranid, and most definitely Chaos meat from the ruinous powers. Where they create some strange monstrosities called Warp Kroot. Occasionally regular Kroot will employ them for a task, where their payment may be some younglings to further the Dark Shapers experiments, or helpers.

The model was actually built and painted as my first entry into Monster May(hem) run by Keith over at angrypiper but I felt he needed some handlers, which is where these four models come in, I've built them as if they have been fed on a diet of Ork, and Space Marine, to increase they size and bulk, to be able to handle the brute in front of them.

All four models used standard Kroot heads and accessories, but the rest was made with greenstuff.

Here they can be seen with their Dark Shaper

I've also done some work on the base to show casualties, as the handlers are removed.

That's all for this post, don't know what I'll work on next, so until next time stay safe and have fun !

Cheers Dave

  2. Really nice work, Dave! I don't know a lot about kroot, and I've definitely never heard of a Dark Shaper before. All the models look great, although for a second I thought the four chaps at the back were Night Lords LOL!

    1. Thank you Matt, you are very unlikely to hear of a Dark Shaper through official channels, as Mark never actually got round to making his design, before GW closed specialist games. I thought as they were on a diet of Ork and space Marines, they would have an affection for skulls ! LOL

  4. These look great, Dave! Very clever trick with the base to show the casualties. I don't think I've ever seen that done before!
It strikes me, though, that the warp kroot may be straining mightily at his chains while the handlers try to hold him back...but nothing's stopping him from just turning around. Imagine the look on the handlers' faces when that chain suddenly goes slack!

    1. Thank you Keith, it's a trick I used to do on my Warhammer movement trays, as it helped mark out how many dead, without having to count the models, allowing me to put them straight into their protective case.
I think you're right and I'm going to include this in the rules for him, on a role of a 1 the Warp Kroot will turn on his handlers, if you lose a handler it becomes a 1 and a 2 and so on, once he's attacking a enemy you don't have to test, unless he runs out of enemies to run into.

  5. Dammit, this is so inspiring! I love your work here, both on the whole concept and how you turned it all into real. You are doing a really interesting job on this Kroot army.

    1. Thank you Suber, the concept was Mark's idea, I just saw it to fruition, as I thought it was a great concept. They last two units are likely to be more in line with standard Kroot models (if I can find some plastics) but hope the positioning of them will make them interesting. Have started formulating a plan for a vehicle for them, so will have to see where that leads.

  7. Great idea and a shame GW didn't see the merits in it.
Execution is as always damned good Dave. Nice believable movement in that scene with the beast straining against the chains.

    1. Thank you Dai, Mark always had some great ideas, and a shame it never saw the light of day.
Glad the movement and tension of the scene, was easily visible, as it was one that really needed the interaction between the pieces.

Oooh, I like this! :-) All look really good and the handlers look as though they're struggling to hang on! I like the "casualty" blood splatters on the base!

    1. Thank you John, wanted the look of the creature straining to get into battle, but have to agree with Keith, if those chains go slack, those Kroot are in big trouble ! LOL

  10. This is a well-executed concept, Dave! Everything can be corrupted in 40k so why not Kroot? I think you did a great job bringing that to life with this mini and who doesn't love a chariot pulled by a big bad monster as well! :)
