Today I have the second half of my recent purchase painted up, now these are characters that are disliked for one reason or another, mostly their actions. First today is Qi'ra, she is second in command of Crimson Dawn under Maul, and was Han's first love, but she chose power over love. The model is a 3D resin print.
Next today is Cid, she is a Trandoshian female business owner, of questionable reputation, I thought the model would do as a business owner on Tatooine. Also a 3D resin print.
Next today is Wato a Toydarian scrap merchant seen in Episode one and the owner of Anakin Skywalker, he has very low morals and is only interested in money, there is a current theory that Darth Vader killed him, so he could still be around in my time frame.

Has he gone ? Good, right if you asked most people who is the most hated character in Star Wars, they would probably say Jar Jar Binks, but if you are older and read the original comics, then they would probably say Jaxxon, who was a six foot tall green rabbit ! His actual species designation is a Lepi. When the original film had finished in it's comic run, Marvel then had Luke trying to recruit on a water planet, and Han on another desert planet, Han ended up playing out the Magnificent Seven, recruiting a bunch of people to save a village and Jaxxon was one of them.
So why did I get this 3D print, bit of nostalgia, plus it was a character I could put in games and wouldn't mind if he gets shot ! LOL and if Dai decided to keep reading here's a picture to keep you happy mate.

DeleteProbably my favourite of your Star Wars posts, Dave, as Jaxxon was my all-time favourite character in the Star Wars comics - and your paint job has most definitely done the figure proud. I've never seen the Han Solo movie or the cartoon series Cid is presumably from. But the paint-jobs on those are excellent too. I was nothing sure whether Watto was meant to bring some light relief to Phantom Menace tbh, as he never made me laugh despite his preposterous design - fat bug with tiny wings that can fly. However, that's a top job you've done on him too. What a roll you are on.

I always thought of Wato as an antagonist, someone for Anakin to dislike and have negative emotions about, as Jar Jar was already the comic relief, always thought his flying was like a bumble bee principle ! LOL
DeleteYou had me laughing in the courtroom with this one! (Luckily, there's nothing going on in here this morning, so no proceedings disrupted.) Jaxxon is indeed THE WORST Star Wars character, ev-ar!!! Gawds, what were Marvel thinking with that design choice!? -__- (You painted him up well though Dave. I'll give you that much.)

Cid was a really fun character in Bad Batch. They gave her lots of depth that added to the main storyline well. Good stuff on painting her up just like in that screenshot.
Watto.... I was always a bit "meh" about him. Then there were the episode(s?) in Clone Wars where Toydarians featured moreso and I grew to like them a bit more in general. Good version of him here and I like the flying stand you chose.

Thank you Dai, glad I gave you a good laugh, without disrupting anything ! LOL I know Lucasfilm use everyday creatures as a basis for their aliens, but they change aspects to make them alien, where as Marvel went here's a green rabbit ! LOL
DeleteQi'ra was an interesting character, happy to play the victim at points if it got her what she wanted, and totally ruthless the next, not a lady to mess with.
There were times with Cid, that she almost seemed to develop a softer side, to then completely throw everyone under the bus.
Watto was a strange looking alien, and as you say the expansion with the Toydarian's made the species as a whole more interesting.
Excellent minis, Dave! You've got the look of them bang on! I thought Cid was a good character in The Bad Batch! And since I've never read the early Star Wars comics Jar Jar Binks remains the worst Star Wars character for me!
ReplyDeleteThank you John, Cid's character actually had a lot of depth and led the story in different directions, and for a lot of people Jar Jar, will always be the worst, at least the actor got to play a Jedi as well.
DeleteQi'ra shouldn't be hated as I think she was a great character in Solo. Its awesome to see her in mini form! Jaxxon looks like Bucky O'Hare quite a bit. I don't know why I know who Bucky O'Hare is, because that is a little before my time but there you are!
ReplyDeleteSadly, I was the right age to like Watto when he came out and I don't mind him as a result haha. Surely some of the characters from the Holiday Special would be strongly hated too? Or maybe that was so bad, its endearing? I've never tried to watch it and it came out before I was alive, though I'm sure I could track it down nowadays pretty easily.
Thank you Jeff, I think Qi'ra's good looks let her get a way with a lot ! LOL He does indeed, Bucky was developed in 77-78 but wasn't released until the mid 80's and Jaxxon came out in 77, so I wonder where they got the idea ! LOL
DeleteI never disliked Wato, as he served a purpose, and I always enjoy seeing new aliens. I once read that George Lucas, would happily get every copy of the special and destroy it if he could, so I'm sure for a lot of people there are, little elements trickle in from it every so often like Life Day orginated there.
Man, you made my day in such an unexpected way! I would have many things to say about all the characters, but Jaxxon stole the show. I still have that comic when he first appears, just with Han trying to muster the not-Magnificent Seven to face... "Arrogantus" was his name? (why has all that stuck in my mind over so long???)

DeleteGreat stuff as usual mat, though with the added bonus of a character from the old days of Star Wars Weekly, I do of course remember Jaxxon, though I never thought of him as hated, Jar Jar on the other hand.....🤮. The whole Magnificent Seven storyline was one of my fave's, can we have a mini of Amazia (might have got her name a bit wrong, it was a while back you know😉).

Thank you Roger, yes George Lucas actually used the word hated when asked about the character ! LOL I hadn't planned do do any of the other crew, and only did this one as I found a print, but I wont say never ! LOL Yes you got her name right.

Thank you Mr.Martin, If I can get it to fit in the narrative, all characters are fair game ! LOL Sooner or later though I will need to do lots of Human civilians, which won't be as much fun to sculpt ! LOL
DeleteWell, I guess Bucky O'Hare had to make an appearance sometime. Truth me told, I'm not a "hater" as such since I didn't know it existed until relatively recently, and literally recognised it as Bucky with a "why is that character in Star Wars?" Which I still don't know.
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised that Watto wasn't cancelled a few years ago for his "racist" accent. He's probably safer today, though! Still annoying, however! ;)
I don't recognise the Trandoshan, so I have nothing to say there on the character - nice work on the model though! And as for the girl from Solo. I didn't recognise her at all and forgot she existed (along with much of that movie) but your description did give me a "oh yeah, I kind of remember her". I do like how the figure turned out, and the visual source material isn't terrible, either!
Thank you Azazael, Jaxxon came out before Bucky, so we can not say what influenced Bucky ! LOL I think for the Marvel artists, it was tricky coming up with alien species, so they stuck with what they knew, one of the other aliens was a Porcupine man ! LOL

The Trandoshian is from Bad Batch series, from season 1 and there until the end of season 2. You may remember Qi'ra more as the mother of Dragons, where she wore a different style of clothing and a lot less ! LOL
