Back when I started my Night Hawk chapter, I painted up a squad of veterans (1 st Company) which got photographed for the White Dwarf article that featured my army, this was back before I had different symbols for my squads, here's what they looked like
You may notice some of the models I showed recently in my assault squad, as all the models here are no longer together or veterans. To mark them as veterans I painted the helms with a feathered pattern. Fast forward a couple of years, and a friend wrote some background and named the 1 st Company the Wing Knights, loved the name, and wanted to change the look to match the name, I've finally come up with a look I like.
The head comes from a Grey Knights, the shoulder pad is my own design, which I've also incorporated in a chest symbol on the harness. I think I still want to have MK VI beakies in the units as well, but it's a start.
I have actually finished another assault squad for my 5 th Company as well, these first 3 are a sergeant model, a plastic combination, and a MK VI Space Wolf Blood Claw.
The next 4 are all Rogue Trader models
The last 3 of the squad are metal Blood Company models and some of the arms actually came from the plastic blood company box as well
I did remember to take a squad picture as well
Many years ago when I worked at GW, my staff made a comment that if I ever ran out of Marine models to make up, they'd watch Satan skate to work, well apparently hell must have frozen over as I've had to resort to sculpting up models that I'd used for parts as you can see below
Yes I'm going to have order in more bits, as sections of the bits box is now completely empty, no bodies, no legs and no helmeted heads left, never thought I'd get to this point ! LOL
This will be my last entry for my challenge, don't worry I will still be following all your blogs to see if you post up entries over the next couple of weeks. That's all for today, so until next time, stay safe, and have fun !
Cheers Dave
Wow..!! Plenty to keep the eye busy with this posting, Dave. I particularly like the Rogue Trader models - absolutely have bags of character - which I think many of GW modern day sculpts lack tbh, and your paint-jobs have done them proud. I think the colour scheme really suits your avian theme perfectly. Nice kit-bash at the end too. Is that a first-generation white plastic beakie head I spy..? LOL!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you Simon, nice to finally have them to a point I'm happy with, some of them are on their third color scheme ! LOL Glad you get an avian feel from the color scheme, as I wanted to portray both night and hawk. It is indeed a RTOB1 head as this veteran sergeant had lost his head to another conversion ! LOL
DeleteIt's a great part of history Dave!
ReplyDeleteThank you Michal, nice to finally have some of these models finally finished ! LOL
DeleteLove it all. But if you have no more bits left it means you managed to use all you had properly, and that's quite something!
ReplyDeleteThank you Suber, got tons of arms and weapons, from many eras, just none of the body bits to start a model ! LOL
DeleteSatan riding a skateboard is quite the image. I guess he couldn't get a faster ride for some reason! Being featured in White Dwarf is an honor most hobbyists dream of (whether they admit it or not!) so that is really cool to see. Its neat to see you making your own marine with your skills as well. That is always really impressive and I'm sure its going to look even better with paint on it!
ReplyDeleteThank you Jeff, I think he's supposed to be on ice skates to get across the ice, but him skateboarding would be funny to see ! LOL Indeed, had several of my creations in Epic magazine and Gothic magazine as well. I have been thinking of sculpting up parts for myself recently to cover what I need rather than just conversions, so you never know, there may be more of this coming ! LOL
DeleteThat's a bloody awesome selction of Assault Marines, Dave! What's the future expansion of this group look like? More Firstborn or do Primaris make the cut? (Or a combination of both!?)
ReplyDeleteThank you Azazael, joys of many years of buying models, you have access to a wide variety of models, without breaking the bank on ebay ! LOL No primaris for me, will be sticking with firstborn throughout, which unfortunately means more Ebay searching ! LOL
DeleteSuper cool these Night Hawks!
ReplyDeleteThose were such a cool times ordinary players could send their stuff to WD and get some attention!
o you remmebed which WD issue was it published in? 🙂
Thank you demi-morgana, I was a staff member at the time, and they were doing staff armies, just to show we actually painted models ! LOL The issue was 231 with a Dark Eldar Reaver artwork on the front
Deleteafter seeing this I wanna play second edition ( edition I was introduced to, and love) again!
ReplyDeletethese look awesome, too bad I was a Chaos follower, I would eat these boys up. haha
Thank you Mr. Martin, second edition was probably my favorite, psychic powers were huge fun, and I could drop grenades with my jump pack troops ! LOL The ruinous power calls to all ! LOL
DeleteI'd also love to play 2nd again. RT was best for small games, but 2nd allowed me to field and feel in control without a huge amount of bookkeeping, my Squat army best.
ReplyDeleteLiking the various jump packs used here. Another really good looking squad Dave.
Thank you Dai, indeed RT was too in depth for large games, unless you had a week uninterrupted ! LOL Only played against Squats a couple of times, but they were a tough army. would like to get a bit more variation in the jump packs when I do the Veterans.
DeleteNice work, Dave! :-) I do like blue armies (just as well, as I have historical armies in blue)!
ReplyDeleteThank you John, me to, as three of my armies are blue (Night Hawks, Kroot, and Lizardmen) why I'm trying to vary colors on everything else ! LOL
DeleteLovely looking assault marines,my crimson fist ones have lots of the blood angels nutcase close combat types as I got them cheap!
ReplyDeleteBest Iain
Thank you Iain, the blood angels seemed to get more assault type models over every other chapter ! LOL
