PATHFINDERS & RIDE

Back to normal this week, and finished off the squad of Pathfinders, there were 3 models left to do.

First is the unit leader, and as you can see by the reference picture above, he seems to have been loosely based on this character from the movie.

Next was the model kneeling which I decided to base the colours on the reference picture above.

Last was a female model, which I decided to go for a dark skin tone, which adds to the variation in the unit, the face shape was very well suited to this skin tone.

A while ago I mentioned doing a vehicle for them, and I've gone with a U-Wing, the basis for this was the Hasbro U-Wing toy which has a Nerf gun in it. Being a toy rather than a model, it's designed for playability, rather than accuracy.

The first thing needed, was to strengthen the wings as they are hollow  as seen above.

I used plasticard to strengthen the wings, and cover the large hole from removing the Nerf blaster, the rest of the holes were filled with Milliput, and greenstuff as seen above.

Why show this, well for anyone thinking of doing the same I wanted to show what you would be up against, as you can get this toy on Ebay for about £20 at the moment.

That's all for this post, hopefully next time I will have progress on the painting, so until next time stay safe and have fun !

Cheers Dave

  1. More Star Wars goodness, Dave - Love 'em! I did think you were turning to Buck Rogers when I first saw the U-Wing. It looks uncannily like a Thunderfighter to me. Looking forward to seeing it finished anyway. Biddy biddy biddy ;-)

  2. The Pathfinders in Rogue One were great character designs. Good to see that the figs represent them pretty well and that your painting has done them justice mate!

A U-Wing is a cool project and of course perfect for toting your new rebels about in.

(O and darn you for getting the. Buck Rogers theme stuck in my head!)

    1. Thank you Dai, even though they were all dressed differently, they worked well as a unit, and was good to get a good representation of them.
Had been toying with what colour scheme to give the U-Wing, Cassian's, Ryder's, or Saw's, but as I got the Pathfinders first I've decided to go with theirs.
I wonder if we were humming it at the same time ! LOL I blame Simon ! LOL

  3. I was about to comment about the pathfinders, but the U-Wing is a show stealer. I'm curious about the work and the result. Can't wait for it!

These are brilliant Dave! :-) I'd never heard of a U-Wing so it sounds like I need to get a boatload of Star Wars reference material for Christmas! I used to be an avid Buck Rogers viewer as well!

    1. Thank you Matt, there was so many variations in the film, that I had to pick a character, and stick to that scheme. Almost got the base colours finished on the U-Wing.

  6. You know me, mate, always happy to see a bit of Star Wars here on the blog! The latest rebels look nice and you've captured their movie likeness well. You have enough Star Wars stuff painted that I wouldn't mind seeing a group shot of your rebels and imperials for example. Just some food for thought when you want to show off your collection a bit :)

  7. I guess you could say you nerfed the nerf gun Dave 😂 great work, but as someone who wouldn't know a lot about the Star wars range, did you go down the toy road for price reasons or was it the olny way to get that ship?

    1. Thank you Frank !LOL There is a model of a U-Wing but the scale is way too small, the toy was the closest in scale, had it for a few years now, just finally trying to get it done

  10. Great looking section fo Pathfinders, and I love the rebuild on the U-Wing as well. I've got a whole lot of SW 3 3/4" ships in storage at my dads (no space to display them here, sadly) :( but you're somehow tempting me to look out for that U-Wing...

    1. Thank you Azazel, the Pathfinders are some characterful models. You must be sitting on a goldmine there mate, this U-Wing is readily available on Amazon and Ebay for roughly £20

    2. Unfortunately, the only one available on Amazon AU is about 10 times that price... or maybe it's fortunately. eBay has some for only three times that - bargain! :D

    3. Sorry to hear that mate, the guys on Facebook may have driven up the price after I showed my one ! LOL

    4. I found it bundled with a TIE Striker on eBay as well, but it was still a good chunk of change. If I were still buying the 3 3/4 stuff I'd have grabbed them and it was still tempting even now - but I've got major storage issues as it is, let alone display space!

    5. So two that would work well for legion, nice ! Understand what you mean with the storage though, as all these big ships take up a lot of room, which is why I was glad I moved away from the 3 3/4 models and moved to the smaller 30 mm ones but I still find myself tempted sometimes, just have to be strong !
