Having only the humans left to do for the cantina, I've moved on to finishing the aliens from Jabba's palace, and the first two are Nikto
The Kadas'sa'Nikto, also known as the green Nikto, were a subspecies of the sentient humanoid Nikto species from the planet Kintan. Like their cousins the Kajain'sa'Nikto, they had scaly skin, black eyes, and symmetrical horns.
Above is an excerpt from Wookiepedia on these aliens, now in "Return of the Jedi" we actually see four of these creatures, some are harder to spot than others, here are the two that are easiest to spot.
The first one we see is Wooof, who can be seen trying to grab Luke when he confronts Jabba.
The second one I have today is Klaatu, who is most prominent in fighting Luke on top of Jabba's barge.
I have started the next two, but they still need a lot of work, and will show them as soon as there finished.
I'm also going to take part in Ann's Neglected models challenge this month, and hopefully I might actually finish the unit of Landspeeders I failed to complete for my challenge, and maybe a surprise or two from my mountain of unpainted.
That's all for this post so until next time stay safe and have fun !
Cheers Dave
Excellent work, Dave. I fear I always thought that was the same alien in "Return Of The Jedi". It never occurred me to that they were different characters. Thanks for the link to Ann's Neglected Models Challenge too. What a great idea.
ReplyDeleteThank you Simon, the only character who had a wardrobe change was Leia in that section, but is an easy mistake to make. No problem on the challenge, always good to share in case others haven't seen it
DeleteMore smashing work Dave. Nikto's are very cool aliens. I wish the original films featured them more.
ReplyDeleteThank you Dai, so many cool aliens were just a fleeting glance, which is one of the very cool things about the Mandolorian series, as they get bigger parts
DeleteThat's very true. Those, Rogue One and Solo all do a good job of offering more non-human types to help flesh out that galaxy further for us. I'm hoping the other upcoming series Disney+ previewed will do likewise!
DeleteI'm currently trying to come up with a good rpg story to run for my play-by-post mates and I already know there'll be plenty of Hutt slave species (Weequay, Nikto, etc.) to help add extra flavour. I even have a Kushiban Bounty Hunter in mind too!
As a lot of the same people are working on the other series, we can but hope.
DeleteSounds great, and a bunny bounty hunter will certainly add a new element, reminds me of an early story in the comics, where Han works with a small band, including a supposed Jedi, and included a Rabbit style creature
Oof... Lepi were not a good species to introduce into the Star Wars galaxy. I guess in 1978 it made for a good idea though? LOL
DeleteKushiban are a little different. Small, cute and easily overlooked. There was a cool Kushiban character in The New Jedi Order novels called Ikrit who was a jedi master. Guess he featured in some Jr Jedi Knights novels too, but I never read those as they were for kids. (Or isn't all of this stuff for kids really? LOL)
Someone must have thought it was a good idea, as some years later there was Bucky O' Hare that looked strikingly similar ! LOL
DeleteIt's a very common thing when you see aliens from the 1970's and even to present day they all follow the human template with different faces, the most striking aliens for me are the ones that don't follow that template, sadly they are few and far between and not always well received by the masses
Very nice Dave! :-) You're certainly improving my knowledge of all the different characters/races in the Star Wars universe!
ReplyDeleteThank you John, some may say it's a passion, but I have a feeling it's becoming an obsession ! LOL
DeleteNice work as always Dave, and some interesting information there too, I'm guess the nod to "The Day the Earth Stood Still" was deliberate.
ReplyDelete"Klaatu Berata Nikto" Is what you say to turn off the robot "Gort" (It also appears in Evil Dead 3, as several other films and series too)as I'm sure you know.
Cheers Roger.
Thank you Roger, it's amazing how much background information is out there.
DeleteThat phrase appears all over the place, can't remember what film I was watching last week but it was actually on the white board as a heading !
That's some skilful sculpting on both figures, the sort characters that are real background types and easily missed. It goes to show just how much went into the SW films.
ReplyDeleteThank you Joe, they really did create entire realms, even if you didn't actually get time to see all the details
DeleteGreat stuff Dave! Still remember my old Kenner figure of Nikto fondly 😀
ReplyDeleteDo you have a skiff model planned in the future or a couple of those barges from the Mandalorian that they were on - though that whole sequence did feel a bit like a video game with wave after wave of them appearing lol
Thank you Ivor, did have the same figure back in the day. I do plan on the skiffs here is how far I got https://wargamesculptorsblog.blogspot.com/2019/04/temporary-loss-of-sanity.html but have found a printed one on Ebay recently
DeleteExcellent sculpting and painting on both those chaps, Dave. It's cool to see these guys come to life in small scale :-)
ReplyDeleteThank you Matt, it would save me a lot of time if someone made all of these characters, but I've probably saved myself a small fortune by making them ! LOL
DeleteLovely pair of background aliens, you're being very thorough on this project!
ReplyDeleteBest Iain
Thank you Iain, some may say obsessive ! LOL Keeps me out of mischief though
DeleteJabba's Palace has enough aliens to keep you busy for a while! (I'm looking forward to seeing Sy Snootles and the Max Rebo Band!) Excellent work as always, Dave!
ReplyDeleteThank you Keith, I'm actually down to only a few aliens left to do for Jabba's Palace, then I'll be stuck with all the pesky humans for both places ! LOL here's a link to the band https://wargamesculptorsblog.blogspot.com/2019/04/let-me-entertain-you.html
DeleteYou did the band already? (Of course you did!) Sadly, the link you provided says the page I want doesn't exist.
DeleteYou know me! LOL tried the link and it seems fine, I'll redo underneath in it's own space.

More great work Dave, if you're not careful Disney will be signing you up 😊
ReplyDeleteThank you Frank, if Mr Favreau needs some new designs I'm available ! LOL
DeleteGreat sculpting and painting as always, Dave. I'm having dual flashbacks to my life as a kid and my more recent past life as a Hasbro 3 3/4" Star Wars figure collector... Loving seeing them all appear in miniature form!
ReplyDeleteCheers mate, had them as a kid, but have resisted the temptation to start collecting them again in that scale, this size doesn't take up so much room ! LOL
DeleteVery nicely sculpted and painted Dave! I had several of this figure as a kid.
ReplyDeleteThank you Simon, had all of Jabba's palace figures when they first came out, but the names have changed since there original release
