MONSTER MAY !

I decided that my Warp Kroot wasn't really enough for an event of this magnitude, so decided to do a second entry for angrypiper challenge this month, this Oriental dragon comes Model Display Products, and was part of my payment for sculpting the beastie, it has sat unpainted for 9 years so about time it had some paint on it.
The colours I chose was blue for the scales, this was shaded with red, highlighted with two more shades of blue and a final highlight of yellow. I included yellow into the fur as well to tie the two areas together.

I have another entry I'm working on at the moment, then I will be doing one for  Ann's Immaterium which is also large things but this one is running until the end of June so should have time to finish it.
So until next time stay safe and have fun !
Cheers Dave

  1. Marvellous stuff, Dave. That would look awesome on a Bushido table as some scenery or as a central objective :-)

    1. Thank you Simon, indeed it would, wouldn't be much use as a movable piece as it's rather large ! LOL

  2. I really like this model, Dave. And you've painted it up brilliantly. Really captures the Oriental tone.

    1. Thank you Roy, can't believe it was sculpted almost 10 years ago now ! Wanted to do him red but thought the Tensei gate would be lost with that colour so went with blue in the end

    2. I think the blue and off-white combo was the way to go, as you've done. Allows the eyes to stand out and the horns and talons to not get lost in the darker tone. The blue and yellow complementing each other, whereas a red could have been harder to find a complementing contrast unless a dark tone or colour was used. And as you say, the gate being red, too much of that colour would have seen the detail lost. - Hah! This is another case of me looking at the images three times while writing this comment.

Here's a question, though. Do you varnish? Varnish being the bane of the miniature painter, second only to photography. I'm finding I'm holding off on varnishing for as long as I can, and just painting at the moment.

    3. Thank you Roy, colour choices can be a pain for any mini painter getting the right balance, on bigger pieces I do refer to my colour wheel to get a good balance, and try to use a triad of colour scheme.
The only varnishing I do is on eyes and occasional bits of clothing, if it requires a shiny area like polished boots or peaks on dress caps, other than that I don't use it

    1. Thank you Frank, it was the second dragon I had sculpted, and thought I would use the painting courses I’d been on to push the painting

    1. Thank you Roger, if I was building from scratch now I would do some parts differently mainly joints between cast pieces, as I can make a better blend now, and probably would do an open mouth as I enjoy doing them, the rest I would keep the same.
Have seen a few blue oriental dragons, and didn't want to do green as that's what I painted the company one in

  5. I am partial to a bit of Oriebtal fantasy and love this sculpt. Strangely, I think I used similar colourscwhen I painted my Oriental Dragon that was converted from the HeroScape one, although i believe I gave mine green hair. May have to dig him out to check (or go back through my older posts).

    1. Thank you Jez, blue seems to be a fairly common colour to go for as I'm sure Andy(DaGobbo) painted one in blue and GoblinLee did an old GW one in a similar colour recently, to be honest with the gate there really was only 4 options Green, Blue White or Black, so blue it was ! LOL

  7. Now THAT'S what I'm talking about! Great brushwork. The fact that you sculpted it too is just too cool! I agree the blue was the way to go, especially with the red torii. A Marvelous Monster for May!

    1. Thank you Keith, it was a commission sculpt after they had seen my Coatyl sculpt ( still my favourite).
Large pieces like this deserve a bit extra on the painting to do them justice
