I HERD IT ON THE KROOT LINE

With the new Great Gnarloc's I'm building for Monster May(hem) I needed some new herders, as each creature needed one herder, now I had two herders originaly from the first Gnarloc I bought from Forgeworld, so only need two more. I've built them from the new Kroot Carnivore squad, and these two are actually standard builds from the set.

Below is the two new herders with my two original ones, I think I still need to add goading sticks to the new ones, and rifles to the old ones.

So I have some initial thoughts on the new box compared to the old one, first you get less Kroot in the box, and it is more expensive, no real big surprise there. The second thing I have to say the detail is not as crisp on the new models, as the detail is shallower, a natural side effect of them being 3D sculpted. The last thing of real note, is these models, will be harder to convert, with the way the models fix together, where as the old one's any set of arms would fit on any body, and any body would fit on any set of legs. The fact that the new models are slightly taller, doesn't bother me, as you would get varying sizes in nature. This concludes my entries for paint what you got, so until next time, stay safe, and have fun !

Cheers Dave

    1. Thank you SD, do you mean the Gnarloc's ? as yes they are pretty big, this is an original Forgeworld one. The size difference between the old and the new Kroot I can live with, as nature has different sizes any rate.

    2. Yeah the gnarlocs, I guess when you see them by themselves it's easy to think they're just normal 28 mm sized.

    3. They are a decent size, when I show the next three I will try to remember a Kroot next to them, for scale.

    1. Thank you Stewart, still enjoying doing Kroot, which is lucky as I thought I had finished ! LOL

  3. Terrific work, Dave, and I certainly wouldn't spot any difference between the old and new sculpts. You do raise an interesting point about the lack of conversion options with GW's latest figures though - which is something that is persistently being criticised by customers these days. It genuinely does seem that GW are turning their back on this aspect of the hobby - especially after all the nonsense recently were they temporarily tried to ban mixing their fantasy bitz with sci-fi bitz for official tournaments (or at least that's what I saw on YouTube).

    1. Thank you Simon, there are some subtle differences in the face sculpting, and body posturing but only when in hand. It feels like this is how you use our models, and only this way, but I do like to break the rules as my next squad will prove ! LOL

  4. That looks great, like a plucked killer chicken, but in a good way.
I'm also not a fan of the GW 'You Must Build It Our Way' minis, it puts me off the new Lord of the Rings stuff, I'll stick with other manufacturers equivalents.

    1. Thank you misterc, it is very alien isn't it ! LOL
It can be very off putting, if you like converting, and want a specific look, but there are ways and means around it, as my next squad will show ! LOL

  5. I know exactly what you mean on the mono-pose sculpts that GW makes these days. I'm not a big converter myself but I can see how limiting it is. The Kroot look great all together with their beast and the size difference is not a problem at all in my eyes anyway.

    1. Thank you Jeff, it's annoying, but will never stop me converting them ! LOL Indeed the size difference is easily in tolerances, and after all they're not clones ! LOL

  6. So no buying new Kroots. Got it. Does that include the Killteam set?

Liking the new additions Dave. Are we going to be treated to an army shot soon?

    1. Thank you Dai, the Killteam set is worse for converting, as the arms join in multiple different places, not that's ever stopped me ! LOL
Hopefully by the end of May, when I complete the next three Great Gnarloc's, but should have the start of a totally new unit up by Friday.

  7. Nice additions! I know what you say about size and specially the setback of converting the new models, but I'm afraid those issues are really difficult to avoid nowadays!

    1. Thank you Suber, the size just adds variation in my eyes, so don't have a problem with that. My next unit will show what I think of GW's idea on this is how they will look ! LOL

    1. Thank you Mr. Martin, I like to vary the tones, to give them a more natural feel, but do like the overall scheme.

    2. Again, these look great, Dave. Years ago I started painting a squad of Kroot when I was experimenting with dipping, as they seemed a perfect prospect for that style, but never finished them - so they never made it to the the dip. I wish I knew where they were - your Kroot posts are making me want to find them and finish them off after all these years!

    3. Thank you Azazael, I would love to see your take on Kroot, if you find the models, as it's always great to see what others do with the same basic models, and who knows there may be someone out there with some great inspiration, that I can borrow from ! LOL
