Most of the GW building kits come with ruined pieces, for me personally I'd like a complete building every now and then, but it does mean leaving these ruined sections to build a ruined building as well. All these pieces came from a now OOP kit which I can't remember the name of, but had 4 small statues on flying buttresses which I still need to finish.
As you can see I've gone for a very old look with all the metal sections heavily rusted, and rust trails running down the concrete and plaster sections.
Above are front and back shots of all 3 sections, and I've added some little details here and there.

Good stuff, Dave. I especially like the weathering - as I'm always a sucker for that. LOL!! I have tons of this stuff to do, but having bought plenty of Gale Force Nine prepainted Gothic Ruins I tend to find it super-hard to get any energy up to even assemble it.
ReplyDeleteThank you Simon, I had intended to do these last year, but then got distracted with the palace instead ! LOL To be honest I have very few GW scenery pieces, I've only got pieces I wanted for my Marine chapters base, so this is only the second ruined building I've done from their range. With the ruins I like to do heavy weathering, to give the abandoned look, instead of light weathering on my buildings in use.
DeleteOh I wouldn't say you ruined it 😁, actually I'd say you did a brilliant job on it to be honest, I do agree that GW do seem a bit obsessed with ruins, it would be nice if they did more complete Sci/fi buildings (mind you I would probably still look elsewhere if I was in the market to be honest).

Thank you Roger, for a pile of rust it didn't come out too bad ! LOL It's probably why I don't have a massive amount of GW scenery, that and the price tags ! LOL To be honest I'd rather make my own scenery, so I can get exactly what I want, the couple of bits I do have are just laziness on my part ! LOL
DeleteYep, if they gave you full pieces, you could always ruin them yourself and have bits left over! :D Nice work on these, and I really like the grey columns.
ReplyDeleteThank you Faust, I think they are missing a marketing opportunity myself, but that's their choice ! LOL I wanted the outside to have a look of concrete façade, and the interior to look like plaster, hence the different colours (plus it gives some variation ! LOL)
DeleteCool job. I particularly like the fact that you took your time to actually paint it accurately. I tend to see this kind of pieces just primed and drybrushed and that's it, and it's kind of a bummer. Nice weathering, textures, blood stains... I do like what you did!
ReplyDeleteThank you Suber, just because it's scenery shouldn't mean we put in less effort ! LOL I know what you mean though, as I've seen a lot like that over the years, but I believe you get out of it what you put in, and I want to play over cool looking scenery.
DeleteIt sounds a bit strange to me not to have completed builidngs in a kit, but also to provide ruins... You've made the ruis into some very good looking eye candy though and the weatehring looks very impressive too.

DeleteNicely done, Dave, I love the heavy rusting on the metal and the overall weathering, you really got the look down. As Suber says, you didn't just slap on a basecoat and some drybrushing, you put the effort in and the result is well worth it.
ReplyDeleteThank you Matt, the way I look at it is if your going to pay all that money for a kit, then you better put the effort in to paint it properly ! LOL as with most GW kits it has an abundance of detail (and skulls) so you need to highlight the parts, the heavy rust is quick and easy to do, so utilise the time you saved on the other parts.
DeleteNice. I like doing ruins bc you can’t really mess it up bc it’s..ruined. Been awhile though. For my loTR stuff I use Hirst arts blocks. 😀

ReplyDeleteThank you John, deciding how old they are, is the first decision, then how much time you have to get them painted, the really rusty works well for covering large areas quickly, so is my favourite for ruins.

DeleteGreat looking set of ruins, I ended up with some from a 40k boxed set which after removal of skulls( GW do like a skull motif don't they?) became a ruined church, your steaming through posts, I've barely got anything done!

Thank you Iain, can see how the gothic architecture would work well as a church, and your not wrong about GW liking their skulls on everything ! LOL In saying that the Cathedral I visited in Malta did have a lot of skulls in it, some real, some carved, and a lot of Grim Reapers.
DeleteTrying to clear a lot of stuff at the moment, as my time is becoming limited, with another venture I'm starting.
I would have to think that GW likes ruins because they're more versatile and you can break them up into pieces or use bits and pieces to make other terrain with them or maybe it is just them trying to achieve true grimdark too, I can't really say. What I do know is that the ruins came out extremely well and you nailed that damaged/not well taken care of look here.
