JUST DROPPING IN

Another month and another challenge, this one being the Season of Scenery, which I run and runs for 2 months, as we all know scenery can take a time, hence the length of the challenge.

For my first piece I've gone for an Imperial Dropship that first appeared in season 2 of "The Mandolorian" episode 6 where the Imperial troops ambush Mando, Boba and Fennec using two of the dropships, now originally I liked the craft, but as this was the first time we'd seen one which was after the time period I was gaming in, I'd dismissed getting one, that was until the series Obi Wan aired and had several in there as well which is set before the time period I'm gaming in.

The model is a 3D print I got off of Ebay, as prints go it was good quality for the size of the piece. It has an interior for the holding bay, now the markings on the outside aren't 100 % accurate to the on screen shots, but close enough for me. For the painting I've kept the weathering minimal. Model wise you can fit 8 models inside, but gaming wise, I would think it would hold 20 models at least going by the episode.

It's funny I used to avoid painting vehicles, but with learning more with weathering, I'm happy to have more of a go now ! LOL

The other participants for this years challenge are so far as follows :

https://justneedsvarnish.wordpress.com/ John has joined in again this year, look forward to seeing what he chooses to do.

https://pmpainting.blogspot.com/ Matt has already posted up his first entry a Dragon Plant.

https://jonhobbydesk.blogspot.com/ Johnny has joined in this year, and I expect to see some 40K scenery

https://rantingsfromunderthewargamestable.wordpress.com/ Roger has returned to the challenge, and is already looking forward to some more MDF scenery.

http://angrypiper.com/ Keith is planning to build his DS9 model and paint, what a beast of a project, and I'm so jealous he has one.

https://kuribospainting.com/ Jeff has said if he can find time he'll try and join in, but he is working on his latest display piece.

https://markamorin.com/ Mark has joined in again this year, but has stated he won't be doing a whole city this time, time will tell ! LOL

https://phillipislandgamingsociety392176732.wordpress.com/ Dave has decided to join in this year as well, as he has a lot of scenery that needs doing, and from his recent posts it could be in multiple genres.

Ther is still plenty of time to join in if you want as the closing date isn't until the 31 st of August.

That's all for this post so until next time stay safe and have fun !

Cheers Dave

  1. Ooo, nice job, Dave! That's a big model and is a really good re-creation of the transporter, and you've matched the painting to the original really well! I've got a few 3D printed vehicles for the challenge but I need to get some filler primer first.

    1. Thank you Matt, it is a bit of a beast ! LOL Tried a different way of undercoating this one with a brush, to help fill the lines but not the detail, wasn't a bad result, but something I need to continue to perfect, or bu a resin 3D printer and print the pieces myself ! LOL

An impressive start to the challenge there, Dave! :-) I really like it! I've only managed to stick a few little bits of cardboard together so far, but it's a start!

    1. Thank you John, probably won't be doing anything as mad as last year, but would like to clear some projects ! LOL At least you've started mate, and that's the main thing.

  3. That's a big model and I wouldn't have guessed it was a 3D print !

    1. Thank you Joe, it did give me a bit of hand ache ! LOL I think my photos blurred out some of the lines, but the hand undercoating certainly helped hiding some of them, as it was easier t control where the paint went, just time consuming ! LOL

  4. Now THAT is super cool! Nice job. It looks like a toy you took out of the box but in a good way if you catch my drift. Super fast too.
Good luck to everyone else in the challenge. 😀

    1. Thank you Stewart, I know what you mean about some of the toys they are super detailed, and some even have weathering on them, I've used toys before, if they give me the right scale. I had already had it built before the challenge, so just painting for this which I started Sunday.
There's already some great entries, and I'm sure a lot more to come.

  5. Very cool ship! You're off and running, Dave! As for being jealous of my DS9, don't be. I think this is going to be a huge pain in the ass.

    1. Thank you Keith, hoping to get a few more vehicles done during the challenge. You can't beat an old MPC warpage for stressing every last nerve ! LOL

    1. Thank you Suber, tried to match the colours from the reference pictures, so used light grey for the chipping instead of silver which really worked, unfortunately the dust colour didn't show up very well in the photograph, still really need to advance my photography ! LOL

  7. The Transporter looks great, Dave. Picking oiut the panels before weathering really gives it that Imperial look.
As for the challenge, I'm in again this year of course. Working on a variety of things, as usual.... :)

    1. Thank you Azazel, I was in two minds whether to do the chipping before or after the weathering, glad I went with before.
Great to have you on board again mate, as you haven't missed a S.O.S. challenge yet, and always bring such variety and quality to the challenge.

  8. That is a very impressive looking ship mate, the grey works really nicely and does give it the look of a film prop (except they don't really have them anymore in the digital age of course!). What do you think of Kenobi? I've watched a couple of episodes and it's a bit hmmm... for me I loved Mando, and Boba Fett, but this isn't floating my boat, mind you I always thought Obi Wan was a bit of boring character tbh.

    Cheers Roger.

    1. Thank you Roger, actually on "The Mandolorian" they did actually make models as often as they could, must be Dave and Johns geek coming out ! LOL
I enjoyed Kenobi, it had some great nods to the original cast, like Leias droid being called Lola like Carrie Fischers pet bird, filled in some blanks as well on the time between other movies and shows, plus for me more reference material for Tatooine ! LOL The lightsabre fights were great as well.

    2. That light sabre scene was pretty interesting, almost like they put back in what was missing from the old films. Ever since Darth Maul showed everyone up with his acrobatic weapon style, the older films paled just a bit when it came to the duels. I tried to rationalize it as 'Darth and Kenobi are older, more strategic, and they are taking a bit of a Kendo approach (though Kendo is usually quite fast and frenetic even though the stances are quite rigid). Overall I liked Kenobi, but my complaint was them wedging things in where they probably shouldn't be. That's my two cents, without giving too much away!

    3. As Obi Wan was being done by a different crew to the other recent series (Dave and Jon not involved) but the director had worked on several episodes in the other series, I had high hopes, for the most part I wasn't disappointed, I think they put a lot in incase they didn't get the greenlight on a second series, and actually opens up a lot more possible Jedi still being alive as well, thankfully the second series has got the go ahead.

  9. That ship is really cool, and generic enough that it could be used for a lot of games. I'm not sure if I missed it, but how long is it?

    1. Thank you Faust, can totally see it in any Sci-Fi setting. You didn't miss it, it's 13 and a half inches long

  10. The dropship looks great, Dave! I would think it will be nice to have in any gaming you do as well. Things are looking up for me and I think I may yet be able to participate in the terrain challenge. I'm glad you're putting it on because I always need motivation to get terrain done!

    1. Thank you Jeff, it will certainly add a quick deployment of a lot of troops, and save me having to get a load more LAAT's ! LOL That's great news mate, and always happy to help with motivation.
