"BLOOD IN THE SAND "

"Gilly, wake up were live in 5, GILLY ! OH hell I'll do it myself !"

"Hi and welcome to Vallatrix's arena for tonight's instalment of Death Match ! This is the Birthday games for lady Quaffig, and is by special invitation only, the general populace is not in attendance, but we've been allowed access to broadcast across the planet: Gilly knows a guy who got an invite."

"Vallatrix, and his party are already in the stands, so I guess we're ready to begin, wait ! who is that sat behind Vallatrix with one of the new hover chairs and genetically engineered sabretooth cats" (whispers in microphone) "Why have I got no information on this person ! Well perhaps we'll learn more later."

"Wait I see the first gladiator entering the arena, it's the Revili Keyla, why are there names so hard to pronounce ! She's armed with her favourite combination of energy sword and shield and is wearing light armour, and I have to say I think she is one of the dirtiest players in the game."

"The next to enter is Cragor, the Ceratid. I think the Revili is in trouble as he seems to have vengeance on his mind, having spent the last lunar cycle in the healing vats due to their last encounter.

He looks to be carrying a new configuration of weapons from his usual. Yep he's got a Pugile stick and attack shield, his skin is like wearing light armour and quite hard to penetrate, looks like he's going all out to cause damage."

"They both reach the centre and salute Vallatrix, and are ready for the fight."

TURN 1

The Reveli has reacted quicker and charged straight in at the Ceratid and unleashes a flurry of attacks with her energy sword, most clashing with shield or armour.. but two have found there mark and drawn first blood, the Ceratid using both his pugile stick and shield as weapons, strikes back at the same time and gets in six hits, four of which have found there mark, knocking the Revili back and gaining the favour of the crowd.

Both combatants are poised ready to strike again, and the Ceratid has taken a couple of steps back before launching himself at the Revili: bracing herself for the impact the two collide again.. with the Ceratid getting the upper hand, again inflicting 3 more wounds; and the Revili inflicting 1 back. The favour of the crowd is well on his side today, as she's been knocked back again.

TURN 2

The Ceratid seizes the initiative this time and steps up and engages in combat. Both combatants are evenly matched at this point, exchanging blows and counter blows, yet neither of them seem able to find the soft flesh behind their armour.

A creak and grind slowly opens the door to one of the pods, and from inside a Deathcoil Beast slithers out into the ring and makes it's way towards the combat.

The Revili strikes back at the Ceratid, and they exchange blows. Again this time the Ceratid suffers another wound.

TURN 3

The Revili strikes first again and manages to find her mark twice without sustaining any more damage, but is now locked in combat with the Deathcoil Beast as well !

The Deathcoil Beast has ensnared her in his coils, while drawing blood.. and only suffering 2 wounds itself. The Ceratid fails to do anything. I think he's shocked by what he's just witnessed, or he's laughing too much.. hard to tell the difference with these guy's. UH OH that sound say's we've got another beast heading into the ring and it's .  .  . "A SKY SHARK" and has flown straight at the back of the Ceratid.

As it flies past the Ceratid it takes a bite at him and inflicts a wound: while the Ceratid managed to cause 5 wounds on the Sky Shark, it might think twice about attacking him again !

                                            TURN 4

The Revili has no choice but to try and break free of the Deathcoil Beast, both inflicting wounds on each other and OH MY! IT'S JUST SWALLOWED HER WHOLE ! Wait what's that appearing out the beasts back, it's her sword... she's just split the beast open from the inside and killed it outright ! The favour of the crowd seems to be moving over to the Revili.

Not to be outdone, the Ceratid has charged into the Revili.. and with a single swing of his pugile stick, has flattened her - dropping her out for the count !

Wait there's something going on outside, and Vallatrix has sent in a goader to herd up the Sky Shark.

Gilly wakes up "what's going on ?" were being told we've got to cut the feed so say goodnight Gilly!

Okay "Goodnight Gilly"
"Somebody call my agent ! !"

                                       AFTERWORD

Hopefully you enjoyed this BatRep it was really enjoyable to play. There was some truly amazing dice rolls during this match, with some fun results like.. the Ceratid causing more wounds with his attack shield than his pugile stick haha, and the Revili getting swallowed, then bursting out of the Deathcoil Beast.

The game was played with the standard ruleset, but what was going on outside the arena you say? Well, for that part we'll be using the new system to play that out at some point, until then have Fun !

Cheers, Dave

  1. I think this, finally, is THe post which shows Death Match as it SHOULD be showcased - in all its glory... by the bloke who knows the game like none other, Dave S himself. This is a remarkably cool post mate, and had me glued to the page from start to finish.. first word to the last. Meh, you have put me in my place hahaha and shown I am not the only one round here to be able to write a cool batrep, nice.. NICE work mate.

The new models are looking stunningly fab` as well, which makes me breath easier.. knowing I stole your entire personal collection (now sitting proudly on my shelf lol).

I also see a first glimpse of `the project` the crowd arena, which circles the entire Death Match game mat, complete with animal pens and sliding doors, right? A highly cool bit of kit, which I can`t wait to see go into public production.

    1. Glad you enjoyed it mate, with so many cool BatRep's to inspire me from yourself, Andy, Simon, Jez, I really had to make sure I pushed the boat out !
Slowly working my way through the painting list, and also doing some for Salute's participation game at the same time.
Really need to crack on with the arena if I'm going to have it done by Salute

    1. Wanted to do some nobles that aren't as rotund as Vallatrix and Quaffig, there will be a male at some point as well

    2. sweeeeeeeet. Me likeyyyy :-)))
    3. I like this too. It is an invaluable aid to anyone interested in this game, because it shows a typical arena game played straight from the rules. It is full of drama and tension and all those funny bits and good/bad dice rolls which go to make a table top game pleasurable to be a part of: and makes for great immersion. A very fun article all round Dave.
    4. Thank you Hils, with so many masterful reports on here, I had to push, and this is the first AAR I've ever written, so is encouraging to do more with these kind words

  3. Me like-y this too. I really enjoyed the style and tone of this one. Of course it is very Boonta Eve Classic Podrace, but then that`s exactly what it was meant to be, right Dave? It certainly worked, and I can`t think of a more enjoyable AAR I have read in a long time: and I poured over the photos with extreme relish as well. A real eye feast.

I honestly think you should do many more of these, as you are obvious master of this format, especially with THIS game. I was also delighted to see elusive yet nonchalantly enticing, almost casual mention of whats happening outside the arena. This stimulated my imagination and made me want more, more more.. MORE please hehe.

    1. Thanks T, will endeavour to do more, yes the style is very Boonta Eve as I didn't want to do a Arnold Rimmer recollecting what dice he threw !
Glad you liked the snippet teasing what's going on outside, as I wanted to show you can play DM then slip straight into the RPG and vice versa

  4. FAN BLOODY TASTIC!! Great work Mr S, lovely flow to the encounter and instructive as well. Would love to see these encounters written up as pure narrative as I think the game lends itself to pure spectacle!

    Brilliant!

    1. Btw was anybody else doing light sabre noises when the energy sword slashed the Ceratid? Just me? Lol
    2. Thanks Andy, will give it a go on the next one. Any advice on how to write it ?
Maybe I should write it in the perspective of one of the glads

    3. I imagine the noise of crackling energy rather than the steady hum of a light sabre, but if it works for you Andy go for it ! LOL

    4. It would work from the perspective of a gladiator definitely, or even a spectator - maybe one of the noble caste. So many possibilities
    5. Sounds good mate, will give it a go

    1. Thanks Michael, yes DM can be very brutal quickly depending on your tactics and choice of weapons and sometimes the luck of the dice.

  6. it is useful to see a battle report of this game because it shows how the game should be played. i wish there were more of these. like the one that steve did, which was long and showed the role play a lot more. this one was good because it showed the other side of it, so added together they show a full picture which is nice.

    1. Thank you Luke, I will do some more and try it following Andy's suggestion which should give it more of a RPG feel but still utilising the standard rules

  7. Absolutely brilliant. From the spot illustrations of the commentators to the crowd shot, this had everything you could want from a DM AAR. Not rules heavy, but with enough detail so that anyone familiar with the rules would know what was going on, with a good narrative showing the thrills and spills of the game. I was actually rooting for the Deathcoil beast and cheered when it swallowed Keyla - although she managed to extricate herself rather spectacularly. Excellent work, Dave.

    1. Thank's Jez, wanted to have an element of humour which the commentators provided well, didn't want to have too many rules that would get in the way of the narrative. The Deathcoil is one of my favourite beasts and is always funny when they swallow a glad. This was the first tie I'd had the glad then break out

  8. Like the others, I think you have found a winning formula for presenting Death Match AAR`s. Most enjoyable and highly enlightening too.

    1. I think you are spot on with that one Dave, Dave S has really nailed the format hasn`t he. Cool beans.. woohoo!!!
    2. Thank you Dave, and Steve, I like Andy's idea to so may try one in that style as well, and see which people prefer. AAR's are something new for me to write so it's a learning curve for me, hopefully I can make them interesting enough while I find my style !

Meh, you have a natural ability I would say.... hey, it occurs to me probably from working with Games Workshop for so long (their batreps are second to none, world over), so its bound to have rubbed off.

    1. I see what you say Steve, and all the intro games were like mini AAR's just in verbal form rather than written, so will adjust my statement to first written AAR ! LOL

You`re not alone there (I thought it was just me *looks guilty*), but I found her sexy looking as well... just like I did with the languidly sprawled blue concubine.
