One of the different things about Kroot is that instead of pursuing an enemy when you cause them to break, they always consolidate to harvest meat or even chow down on their victims. I wanted to do a squad that was a visual representation of this, as at the time I thought it would help in achieving best army at the tournament.
I've photographed the unit in several parts, as I noticed that on some of my previous photographs, some of the models were very blurry. This first set are actually pulling apart a victim and chowing down.
The next group have harvested what they want and ready to set of back into combat.
This last model is the first new model I've bought for this army in a long time, it comes from the Blackstone Fortress game, but I'm using it as a shaper for the unit.
DON'T FEED AFTER MIDNIGHT !
This is my entry for Monster May angrypiper, the Warp Kroot, I've changed my regular colour scheme to represent his uniqueness. Once I'd painted the standard dark tones for the army, I added a black glaze all over to mute the colours, I also added a dark red glaze between the muscles as if he'd been feed Khornate meat.
I'm currently working on a Dark Shaper to lead him, and four handlers, he's a big boy after all and may take a lot to restrain him.
That's all for this post, so until next time stay safe and have fun !
Cheers Dave
I've always been a big fan of the Kroot, and these are great, Dave. Love the colour scheme you've gone too. Marvelous beastie!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you Simon, I also always liked the Kroot as they were less humanoid than a lot of the other races. Took the colour scheme from tropical birds and I really like how the Warp Kroot turned out
DeleteAnother great idea Dave having a group eating their victim, was there anything in the game rules wise for this happen or was it just in the fluff ?
ReplyDeleteThank you Frank, it came from the rules, only Kroot units with hounds could pursue all other Kroot had to consolidate to harvest and eat the dead so it only seemed fitting to model some doing it, plus it gave another very distinct look to a unit
DeleteThanks for the answer Dave, I always like these kind of rules in 40K with the chaos dread been one of mt favorite, yes he might kill some of his own side but that was the fun of it right :)
DeleteNo problem at all Frank, the character style rules were the best part in my opinion, thinking of doing something similar for the Warp Kroot, but more on that when I’ve got all the elements finished
DeleteOh my goodness, love these Dave - such a great idea for the conversions.
ReplyDeleteThank you Michael, I like to try and do something different to the normal if possible ! lol
DeleteBlimey Dave, the advert used to say that eating a Pepperami was a bit of an animal, what must that poor creature have endured when you fed it frenzied Khorne meat. I'm surprised the stuff didn't try and start a fight inside it's stomach and attempt to claw itself free from the inside.
ReplyDeleteThose are some cracking conversions and paint jobs. They really capture the character of the species and background 'fluff.' I always thought of the Kroot as the poor half of the Tau Codex, and the chap I knew who had a Tau army had it as a 100% Tau-only shooty force, so I'm not alone in disfavouring the Kroot. But I reckon you're changing my opinion on the them.
Thank you Roy, I imagine that the shaper experiments with small amounts to begin with, like the cadre and himself that I’m working on at the moment, increasing muscle mass and strength and size, then experimenting further like this poor unfortunate project where he took it too far.
DeleteAlways felt that the Kroot were an after thought in the Tau codex and wasn’t surprised that they were very rarely used, it was why I was so happy when they did a separate list for them as they had a lot more character
First one out of the gate, Dave! And a fine beast it is. I got out of 40K before the Tau were really a thing, but I definitely know about the Kroot. Still that's a monster that could be used for a lot of other games: a summoned demon, a creature from beyond, a failed (or successful) lab experiment, or an alien predator (which I guess it is). That's impressive work!
ReplyDeleteThank you Angry Piper, surprised I’m the first finished, have a bigger monster that I will try and get done, as it’s been sat for far too long.
DeleteWish I’d taken a cast off it now, hadn’t thought of all those other uses ! lol ah well hindsight is a wonderful thing
Very nice work Dave, a bit on the gruesome side, but still very nice.
ReplyDeleteLove that beastie, fits in really well.
Cheers Roger.
Thank you Roger, indeed not for the faint hearted ! lol
DeleteWas pleased with how he turned out, Kroot elements but different enough to be unique
ven I do't have a clue what (who?) Kroot are these look delightful and the feeding mini-vignettes are great too !
ReplyDeleteThank you Joe, Kroot are supposed to be an alien race that evolved from a type of alien bird, the fact you like them anyrate, shows your a true gent
DeleteLove Kroot, they are some cool and interesting xenos in the Tau army.
ReplyDeleteYour colour scheme is different and I really like it. The little vignette of them pulling apart the body works really well mate.
Thank you Dai, the colours are taken from tropical birds to add some brightness compared to GW version. Glad you like the vignette mate
DeleteSuper looking Kroot! I really like the warp beast one too, terrific energy in the sculpt!
ReplyDeleteBest Iain
Thank you Iain, have finished painting all I currently have for them now, so building a couple of pieces to add until I can get hold of some more plastic Kroot, Father's day is coming up so who knows ! LOL
DeleteI have no idea what you are talking about with regard to the back stories on these gruesome figures Dave but your painting is lovely, especially on that last thing :)
ReplyDeleteThank you John, no worries on understanding them, if you can appreciate the painting

ReplyDeleteLove what you're doing with the kroot, one of the most unique and best looking kroot force I've ever seen.
ReplyDeleteThank you Wouter, I wanted the models to show the Krooy's traits, and help show their background as much as being a gaming army
